People dying left and right, fratricides are daily politics, few societies last a generation, etc. Almost feels like we're in the world of Berserk here.
Oh, and bandits and other nasties keep perpetuating the conflicts, killings, etc? Yep, sounds like a Crapsack World.
Reality is a crapsack, though.
Naw. That's just reality.
Just because of how we read terrible things in lore, It does not mean it is like this in all places of Runeterra. Most of lore is about backgrounds, which actually the interesting parts. It is like how mages are actually pretty damn rare in Runeterra but we see a lot of them in gameplay. Ordinary and peaciful lore is not interesting. It always needs conflict.
Also, also, among the big, well-known universe, there is no darker one than Warhammer 40k IMO. This shit is full of terror.
I mean...is not like real life is a walk in the park (although you can walk in the park xD). it just got less magical and more realistic in order to give more depth to the characters instead of the usual stereotypes (we still get way to many stereotypes for my tastes but is less than when riot started)
