Yasuo's jug: what's it called?

Ralanr··2 votes·2,241 views

What kind of bottle or jug is Yasuo drinking out of? I've seen the design in anime before but I never really heard of a name.

Or is it just a bottle (though I don't mind if the name just translates to bottle)?

I don't know if the bottles styled after Gourds are actually just called Gourd Bottles or not, but it's that kind of thing. Dunno if Ionians refer to them differently.

As for the beverage itself, dunno, but most likely some Ionian liquor. Tropes would indicate it'd be refered to as sake, but Ionia's a continent of Runeterra, and we're not talking about the real world island, so whether the term sake exists there is debateable.

I just assumed milk actually. But only because of Tvtropes.

Could be milk too for all we know, though Yasuo has hints of the wandering loner with an alcohol problem trope, so I've always assumed it was alcohol. Would also make sense since you can use pure alcohol to clean wounds, so maybe the school of thought is that he could use whatever alcoholic beverage it is as a semi-workable wound cleaner/light painkiller. Course I'm stretching there as the alcohol content would need to be pretty sodding high, and Yasuo actually drinks it.

According to the rules of ESRB milk is better than alcohol at cleaning wounds.

In AMA it was said he holds milk there.

But was that a joke or serious answer? The AMAs are rife with jokes at times. It's a good thing of course, but perhaps not helpful here.

In your mind it can be sake

Interestingly I can't seem to find the quote now.

Considering other parts of the AMA, it might've been a joke, as you said.

You never heard the name, because - according to my superficial research - it's simply called a "bamboo bottle".

That is, Google search showed quite a lot of results for that phrase in Japanese, so something's up, right?

Agree here, could find a lot of results with "bamboo bottle" but none of them offered a specific name for it.

You can of course use the japanese word(s) for it, which is what, btw?

Actually searching for it in English results in a lot of vacuum flasks with bamboo casings.

What I searched for is "竹の水筒" romanized "take no suitō" - the latter however gives exactly 0 relevant results.

First kanji stands for "bamboo", second for "water", third for "pipe", "tube" or "cylinder" and hiragana "の"(no) is an equivalent of English "of" - except in Japanese it's usually used in a reverse order; e.g. it'd be Legends "of" Legends. So a literal translation would be "water bottle [made out] of bamboo".

PS. Dropping "の" and searching for only "竹水筒" works as well.

######PPS. Take it with a grain of salt, I wouldn't be able to construct a proper sentence in Japanese, if my life depended on it (unless it's the "My name is..." one).

This is, in quite a literal sense, exactly what it is.

Just a piece of hollow bamboo that is used to hold/store something, whether liquid or powder or something that is hard to just hold and requires something to contain and transport it easily.

Usually a tight fitting lid or a cork is used to stop the contents from spilling out and a slight raised side or small indent on a side is made on the inside part to make pouring easier.

I think you might have a bit more luck googling "bamboo canteen" since canteen would probably be the closest direct translation on the intended use/purpose of it

"Canteen". Yeah, I suppose that's the only related item, I haven't thought about here.
