We have a "Battlemage" class tag, but not a real Battlemage!

Skyrim BattleMage

That is horrible for a fantasy inspired game!

We can't have a combination of Mythological beasts and rarities, Medieval autocratics, Cyberpunk progressists and Hextech machines and NOT HAVE THE CLASSIC BATTLE MAGE.

**We have Warriors of all types: ** Classic heroic / cocky type (Garen, Jax, J4, Xin'Zhao, Braum, etc) Huge and brutal (Darius, Warwick) Nimble and Fast (Fizz, Yasuo) Paladin (Taric, Kayle, Leona) Berserker (Trynd, Olaf) Beastkin (Nasus, Trundle, Volibear, Warwick, Shyvana, etc) Golem/Elemental/Animal/Non-Humanoid (Skarner, Rek'sai, Maokai, Malphite) Bloodthirsty Nutjobs (Rengar, Renekton,~~ Teemo~~) Mystical (Irelia, Yorick, Aatrox) Enchanced by external entities (Illaoi, Kayn) Upgraded with Technology (Jayce, Camille, Singed) Female with oversized weapon (Poppy, Riven, Vi) Martial Artists (Lee, Yi, Udyr) Ninja-like (Shen) Oversized brute with no weapons/armor (Gragas, TK, Zac) Towering armored figure (Naut, Mordekaiser) Gladiator (Pantheon, Fiora) Hulk / Mr. Hyde Like (Gnar, Mundo)

And yet AND YET

We don't have the quintessential Battle Mage Archtype: The armored and armed Warrior who battles with both magic and martial arts; as capable of wielding a warhammer as to cast fireballs or create things out from nothing.

The closest things we have for this are:

Taric, but the heals, the shield and the support style move heavy toward the Protector Paladin or the Healer Paladin than warrior mage.

Braum: Almost puts the nail on it - Armor, Weapon(Shield?) and Ice Magic. But Braum is again Paladin like, doesn't feel have the agressive vibe of the battlemage.

Leona, So close - Leona mixes it all Swords, Shields, Armor, Martial Experience and Warrior Bravado with enchants, magical fire and other thaumaturgy. But as a support and a Tank, Leona falls bland on the fantasy of the battlemage who are very very VERY damaging/dangerous by concept.

And then

Sweet, Sweet Diana. Diana had it all. The theme, the feel, the gameplay. She was our very first, perfect, beautiful Battlemage -- But it turned out to be too much in the day, and she was nerfed and tweaked and modified until she became an assassin, something she wasn't designed to be and out of the original theme. Then she was left in Oblivion, forever, and now playing her is like using a failed concept.

If you can't imagine a Battlemage think of the classic Skyrim character at the start: Wearing heavy armor, Sword in a hand, Magic Fire in the other. That's a battlemage. A very basic one, but fully grasps the concept.

There's plenty of battlemage concepts across many games. One popular in the aRPG genre is the Templar, who is a warrior with elemental or holy powers (Read: Not a holy paladin, but a warrior with magic elemental powers, often brutal and fanatic, always very dangerous)

Magical powers can come in any form, as long the character IS a warrior. Certain metrosexual fruitcake who became very popular in 2016 is the ideal Battlemage by definition, mixing Alchemy, Magic and Swordfighting perfectly, already existing from books years ago.

The battlemage concept is old and very very popular in movies, games, series, books, etc. It is old as hell, and many of the most loved / remembered characters in many games were based on the Battlemage class.

Nothing came to mind yet? How about mixing Magical heavy armor, A big enchanted soul-stealing sword, massive elemental ice power and necromancy. No bells ring?

It's the damn Lich King, one of Warcraft's greatest anti-hero. Another Battlemage by concept.

How come LoL doesn't have one. C'mon. We Need One. Riot!!!

Kayle, Leona, Kennen, Xayah, Sejuani, Rakan, LeeSin, Kassadin, Illaoi, Mordekaiser, Azir . Why do you not consider these champs to be battlemages? They combine conventional weapons and armour with magic. Obviously they're no mages in-game using the subclass definitions, but they seem to fit the thematic archetypes you're describing. It's a genuine question. I'm not a big gamer myself, so a lot of the class terminology you've used in strange to me.

Also, Diana's got a mini-rework on the PBE, so hopefully playing her becomes more viable soon.

Ryze comes pretty close for me tbh. or Katarina uses daggers to facilitate her magic.

Battlemage is a mage who's opt for combat. Because Elder Scrolls specifically defines as mages who use both swords and magics, and that many battlemages would end up equipping swords and armours for practical ends in combat as well, doesn't meant that's the big idea of it all. A mage who's all bang bang boom boom is also a battlemage, as long as their theme is entirely combative.

And Witchers are not battlemages. What they use isn't even magic but a derivative form of it. It's a theme hammered in the title again and again, while they may have been mutated via alchemical and other means to give certain inhuman characteristics and have trained in martial ways as well as learning how to use pre-packaged elementary magics, Witchers are actually not that stronger than any other trained soldiers. A Witcher mostly fights physically with swords and gadgets, it's only in the game that the use of signs are exaggerated a bit for gameplay.
