@Riot: Question about the two statues on Summoner's Rift

So I've always been wondering, what was the reason behind the two statues on each end of the Rift? On the blue side, there's a male knight in heavy armor holding a hammer, while the red side showcase a female mage in heavy armor wielding a staff. Not to mention the blue side has patterns of a stag while the red side has patterns of an owl.

What was the reason for this design? Were there suppose to be a lore of the two at war or something? Would be cool to know, even though Summoner's Rift is non-canon to the lore.

According to the art book the red side is supposed to be more warped by the rift and has more magical blue side

Are you assuming the gender of those statues?

I believe they represent the protectorates and the magelords. They were indeed at war as well.
