I don't keep up much on lore these days
But have they explained why Demacia hates mages and Garen summons a giant magic sword from the sky to obliterate his foes, or?
(also i have been meaning to get back into the lore scene where can i start)

Garen's abilities in-game aren't canon in-lore. However, the Lux comic seems to indicate that Garen's sword might be imbued with magic by Kayle, without Garen's knowledge.
In the lore he can't summon a giant sword from the sky, but in the small section of in-game lore (mostly just explanation for abilities) he might be able to because Kayle deemed him worthy. That would also explain the similarities between their ults.
