Trundle's rewrite has always been controversial. Turning a sympathetic character into a stereotypical power-hungry lackey, maybe there can be a way to merge these stories together.

Everyone's gonna get an expanded story as we've seen with Fiora, so it's highly likely, but he's probably not gonna be getting one for a while as there's folks who sorely need it more, like Nocturne, Fiddlesticks, Malphite and so on.

I'd imagine a Trundle expanded lore would speak more to what growing up was like, the process of him becoming the Troll King and then leading on to where he went from there that made him infamous in Freljord.

Keep in mind of course that old Trundle and new Trundle are alike only in name and species. New Trundle is essentially a new character and any new lore for Trundle will be to cater to his current demeanor and not his old one.

Old Trundle would've fit in the new story, but instead a new character was made to fit the new story. These two characters are different, they have different personalities and traits. Merging them will simply create a third character.

On top of that, the new guy has been around long enough so that people may have gotten attached to the new character. Removing the new character would be just as big a mistake as removing the old one was.

A Trundle rewrite could have him looking out for his people's interests, and why he feels siding with Lissandra will aid with that. He can still be the guy that killed the previous Troll king.

That's what I meant by a merger.

I had a plan on a story for Trundle that went something like this:

Trundle, as a child, liked stories for their fantasy element. Troll parents aren't the greatest things in the world, but whenever they got some loot, Trundle would get the say in books to keep because they felt like they were getting more use out of them before becoming toilet paper. Of course, Trolls have no interest in any sort of booksmarts or stories, slowly alienated him from his kind. As he grew, he felt like there was something missing in Troll society, a room for growth that had grown from his studies. As soon as his interests were made known, the Chieftain of his clan exiled him in fear that Trundle would hamper his rule. This wasn't exactly a bad thing for Trundle since he didn't like it there in the first place, so he took himself elsewhere and made himself useful where he could (Trolls make hard workers and you wouldn't exactly want to upset one if you could help it).

He learned many things in his exile, such as what strength means and the cruelty of People. But, something gained on his mind. His past self and it's ambitions. He had seen the outside world and the signs of a coming storm, both of which could topple his people as Man had done to so many others. He did not want his kind to quietly disappear into that storm. And Trolls never did something quietly. And so he trained himself. Trolls weren't known for martial arts, but the advice of another wandering handyman Jax made him understand that as long as one could grasp the basics of what a weapon could do, you could at least partially counter it's main feature. But, even with his newfound strength, he would not be able to take out the Chieftain, a towering, heavily-scarred monster who could easily just ram his club into Trundle's general direction and squash him. Not to mention his equally towering grunts that would get in his way.

It was then, camping the night in a small cave to escape a blizzard on his return home, that Trundle came face to face with the Ice Witch. Promising him powers as if out of a story, she implored him and his people to become her allies. Rumor says that Trundle dismissed her before pondering her offer for a quarter fortnight. It was then, with incredible reluctance, that he accepted her terms. Trundle finally returned to his home, now a half-horizon spanning hive of activity and preparation. But, as his mind was touched by Man, it was something that he would never have wanted. The Chieftain had turned Tyrannical, encompassing every Troll clan in the region and removing all opposition with a literal iron fist. Memories of him lost, Trundle could sneak through the city with ease, forging the links that would support him in his rule.

After the bonds were done, Trundle strolled in to the Palace, the old hall where his mother had birthed him all those years ago. The Guards were no match for his diligent martial training, allowing him to head straight into the throne room without challenge. There, the Chieftain lounged among slaves and luxuries of all kinds. The sudden interruption brought him to his feet, only to laugh at Trundle's relatively minute frame. When Trundle roared is challenge though, the victor was instantly decided. The ice bound chambers suddenly echoed with power, their very light degrading the Chieftain's visage. All the while, Trundle's body surged with strength and power beyond even his own comprehension. Despite the apparent difference in both power and skill of the two fighters, the fight carried on for hours, bringing hundreds of spectators to witness the feat of the exiled pariah against their king. In a final echoing punch, Trundle brought the Chieftain down only for the crowd to raise him high, granting him the right of bearing the title of Troll King.

Now, Trundle maintains vigil over the Trolls, ever wary of the warring nations around him as his people rebuild into a city out of his first remembered story, Utopia.

Trundle : "This power ain't a collar you strapped onto your lil' pet, witch. It's the blade that you, the blacksmith, forged. Although I'm pretty happy with it, that don't mean that I shouldn't ever swing it in your direction."

You can merge the stories. You can create a new character as you described. That's right. You can't have both the old and the new character inside one non-schizophrenic non-haunted person though. They're simply different characters, despite sharing a significant amount of character traits (that're common for trolls).

What is your goal here? What do you want to achieve by merging the stories? Or do you disagree with one of my statements?

I'm not saying you fit all of the traits in both stories, but you're telling me you can't imagine a troll selling out his people's freedom if it means protecting their lives? I think you're overthinking how different these two stories are. Fiora isn't dramatically different with her new lore. It expanded on some traits, but I'll admit it sacrificed other traits.

Of course I can imagine that. However, have you looked at Trundle and Trundle? They're bastards. One of them is an embittered and cynical sadist. The other a power-hungry and brutish sadist.

And you're telling me that there's no way you can have a story that turns them from a sympathetic character into that? Even if he's still a bastard, you can feel sorry based on how he got there. Look at Sion and Urgot.

Can I ask you what you're trying to achieve with your suggestion? It's unclear to me.

How is it unclear for you? It's been explained several times. People liked the old trundle, but the new trundle probably won't be retconned. Their stories aren't so different from each other that they can't be linked. People complain about Xerath being different, but the end result is similar: turns into a magical creature, destroys stuff, gets imprisoned. Fiora is still a woman who loves dueling, though her motivations feel different.

If you don't like the idea, that's fine, but I don't see how this is difficult to understand.

Isn't the controversy about their characters, not their stories? Linking the stories won't bring the old character back. So how would linking the stories, which already has been done quite a bit in their current state, reduce the controversy?

Xerath has been turned into a magus attempting to be one with magic to a vengeful schemer. It can be fixed, but with the current lore that's how he is portrayed.

The stories explain their characters. I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand. Trundle wouldn't be exactly like his old self, but his new self doesn't make it impossible to link. You're overvaluing how different these characters are.
