Why does Noxus have a "Grand General" instead of a "King"?

I have always been curious about this. Why is it that the ruler of Noxus is called a Grand General, rather than a king? It could be that the Noxians do not want any connection to Demacia (which is a monarchy). I wonder if Noxus has a similar past to the Ancient Rome?

  • Noxian villages/towns unified under one king. (Mordekaiser when he was human?) Monarchy established.
  • King of the Immortal Bastion was overthrown for good. (Undead Mordekaiser was defeated and unable to resurrect until centuries later)
  • Noxus now ruled by an oligarchy/meritocracy. The Noxian High Command would be the Noxian version of a Senate.
  • Grand General would be the equivalent of a dictator. A dictator in the Roman context was a guy who was given full authority to deal with a military crisis or to perform a special mission for the Senate. Guess what was a major issue for the Noxian High Command? Jarvan the First and his army besieging Noxus's capital city.
  • Boram Darkwill was appointed Grand General in response to the attack
  • Darkwill achieves immortality. From henceforth, he was a dictator in perpetuity because he can't die.
  • Immortal Darkwill rules Noxus as a pseudo-kingship with his two sons, Draythe and Kieran.
  • Darkwill and Kieran die, and Draythe's MIA (not sure if he's dead or not).
  • Swain and Leblanc assume official power over all of Noxus.

Its likely that the military took over Noxus at some point and remained in control ever since.

Keep in mind that while the grand-general of noxus is essentially its ruler,he is not identical to a king in that the grand general is chosen,by the higher ups,wheras the king inherits the power,which really fits with the noxian philosophy in that you have to earn your position,instead of being born with it.

I think it's a reference to a feudal warlord society.

They are a very militaristic society, so nothing more natural than their leader being called Grand General and be elected trough meritocracy (well, in theory it should be by meritocracy and not by indication or conspiracy) I think they work like the Turians from Mass Effect where militarism and civic life are the same thing.

Noxus is more of a military dictatorship.

What happend is that at one point noxus was a monarchy but due to it being corrupted by the secret society of the Black Rose the people of Noxus called for a change. So now in theory the grand general is suppossed to be granted to whoever is the most powerful but this has also been corrupted because since swain is a member of the BR.

Ideally Noxus should be a land of survival of the strongest and you can see that in champions like Kled,Riven and Darius. On the other hand you have other Noxians like Vlad, Leblanc and Swain who posses strength in a different sense.
