I would LOVE an expansion for the Pit-Over/Yordle city aspect of the rift. We have a lot of champions that come from those places (though not so much from Pit-Over), so i'd love to see more ties from their lores and some more mechanical champions like Blitzcrank and Orianna would be refreshing to see.

Yeah it was nice having a year of mythological bad asses, something I always felt League lacked just a bit. It'll be nice to get back to some regular joes though from around the shop, the only question is where will they hail from?

While I'm sure you know this, wanted to clarify that we are still planning to make bad ass champs, just pulling away from the myth aspect a bit. I don't think a "regular joe from the shop" would quite be able to cut it on the rift!

Next few should be closer to Ekko than Bard in terms of presence in "real world" Runeterra though. Any areas you are hoping to see more from?

How about more champions who wear glasses? It seems you guys are lacking in those types of champions (I don't count skins like gragas esq., I mean the actual champions).

I'm with Decrit on Plague Jungle. It's just such an amazing name that I imagine is full of terrible monsters like mire beasts and manticores and junk and we get....a monkey made of stone? Is the idea that you'd want to see one of those terrible monsters as a champ, similar to Rek'Sai? Or that you'd want to see a champ that shows what kind of person/thing thrives there amongst the monsters?

Or is this just general Plague Jungle interest, with a desire for more info but not necessarily a new champ?

Archenz8 votes

The champion concept omen might be the type of champ many would expect from the Plague Jungle.

Not some humanoid with big boobs (zyra) Or an animal that's basically a human (wukong).

I mean full on beast, like reksai but without the desert feel. With forest/jungle type feels to it.

Omen looks like a jungle champ, good coloring, spikes, four legged. Kha Zix is also something I would expect from the Plague Jungles, although a bit to purple for that.

Anyway, League REALLY needs none human or humanoid champs, since most of the league pool is just humanoid or human.

If you want cool none human concepts, the easiest place to take them out of is the place jungle.

Hope this helped :)

What I would like to see is someone who fitted an ideal that Riot had for Teemo before there was any real meta, he was an assassin because there were no assassins really but roamers with high damage. The idea was he lead the way for his team as a "swift scout" while covering his movements with shrooms and using his passive to spot enemy movements like a real scout would.

He would deploy trickery and dps for run and gun style gameplay instead of trying to match someone in raw strength.

It didn't work in the end but for a future champ I would like to see that happen as a sub class of assassin, a scouting survivalist type who used guerrilla warfare and while not making a huge impact on his own he would be almost invaluable to the team (as in his individual actions would normally mean a lot, but not if he had no team to gain from it). Something I would like to see in future to end the burst mentality amongst damage based roamers

While not exactly the same, we did try this out with Ekko - kind of a "utility assassin". That's why he has the slows and the long duration, AOE stun on his kit. Compared to say, Zed, who is damage on top of damage on top of shadows on top of damage.

I do think it's hard to say "here's a new assassin - one that won't kill you on their own!". At that point, we're talking about a roaming team enabler, which sounds like a better tank or support to me. Idk though... anybody have other thoughts on something like this?

Ralanr2 votes

Utility. Assassin.

I feel giving a champion who is classified as "killing things very quickly and then escaping" and making them heavily utility based would be infuriating. Actually the reason I dislike Ekko.

Though a roaming team enabler. I can think of two champions who might be interested in that concept. Aatrox and Pantheon (Pantheon is more of a personal observation because I use his ult to roam and help teammates after I take a tower).

We also kind of already have a roaming enabler (just not in the way that's buff buff). His name is LeeSin.

And Bard exists.

Though, "Assassin that can't kill you on their own" also sounds like the tagline for a AD support. A guy who empowers people through commands and sheer charisma.

Like this guy http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121220155814/gurennlagann/images/1/17/Kamina_with_sword.jpg

AD Support/Assassin.

Edit: Anime on the LoL boards...Here come the downvotes.

KING OF MASKS3 votes

Aatrox could fit the role of AD support perfectly (minus the Kamina-esque charisma); he's meant to be a dark and mysterious war god who can whip up even the most exhausted, ill-equipped soldiers into a bloodthirsty frenzy.

Right now he's just a red demon guy who goes around slapping people with his sword though.

Just saying, Sion had it worse. Completely eradicated from the game. Vastly different voiceover, visuals, gameplay, and even the lore is a bit different. The worst of all is that they didn't make any traditional skin. Where as for Trundle they just completely removed his lore and changed his visuals a lot. Imo Sion's visuals got changed more though. When I saw the trailer for the rework it took me a while for even the THOUGHT of that being Sion to cross my mind.

I would like more Targon,Bandle city & Independent champs who come from the independent regions/places (think Annie & the Vodoo lands) Mt. Targon because 2 of my favorite champs (both gameplay & narrative) comes from there. And I'm also a sucker for Greek (Roman?) inspired stuff.I like to see more from the region (it's the least developed faction in the lore).

Bandle City because there's a high chance we can get more fun from there.Let me explain,in terms of fun,the lore side of LOL has been moving away from that & producing more dark & serious stuff (champs & lore).I want some fun,light-hearted champs & stories to show the good side of Valoran.Plus,I'm a sucker for cartoonish characters.

Independent champs because we don't really see or hear about the places that aren't affiliated with any factions. The world should be much bigger than that.It could be a tribe,a village,a large city hidden by a magical barrier, etc.

Agreed, and this is something that has come up in discussions. I think it's also important that we don't relegate "fun, light-hearted" to the Yordles - need our other factions to have this as well. Ekko touches some of this, though he obviously still has dark & serious aspects (Chronobreak my heart).

Personally, I'd like us to hit on this more in the coming year of champs than we have been recently. That said, we'll still have dark and/or serious champs, and we work far enough in advance that our next few champs aren't likely to change personality from what we currently have - whatever that personality may be (no spoilers from me!)

Jeddy0172 votes

I agree, limiting the fun to Yordles wouldn't be fun. They just have the highest possibility of being fun.I just feel I had enough of the dark & serious for the time being.Burning Tides & releasing Death as a champ filled my appetite for that taste. Plus I'm not saying we should stop with the grimdark, just need to bring back some fun to champs & the lore.

You know, League has had a lot of "bad ass" champs over the years--in fact, a wide swath of the roster has been described as "bad ass" by Rioters at some point or another. whether that's Udyr as a "bad ass monk," Sejuani as a "bad ass marauder," Ryze as a "bad ass mage," Karma as a "bad ass spiritual leader"...You get the point! While you guys (and some other developers) seem to really like the not-super-descriptive archetype of the "bad ass," I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more variety down the line. Enigmatic and disciplined like Ryze, ruthless and resilient like Sejuani, champs in general that have appeal beyond a term that's used to describe so many wildly different things that I'm not quite sure what it means anymore!

That being said, while "Average Joe from the shop" might be too far one way on the Down-To-Earth Spectrum (Down-To-Runeterra Spectrum?)--with Bard about as far on the other side as possible--I think League could use a few more champs that aren't completely as unrelateable as the myths we've been getting recently. Not necessarily dudes just doing their 9-to-5, but champs that bring themselves to the roster through their work (blacksmiths, chefs, couriers, cartographers, etc.) or through extraordinary feats (Caitlyn cleaning up Piltover, Lee Sin setting himself on fire) rather than some sort of destiny / artifact or being an actual god, which has been a popular direction since Lissandra way back in 2013.

You guys have been going pretty heavy on the the deities, demigods, and figures that most people only hear about in stories. While those are certainly fun and cool, League could use a few more champs that are renowned in some sort of field or culture, or at least known. I think it's time the roster was treated with a few more champions, and a few less legends.

Yeah, I kinda knew as I used the term "bad ass" that it wasn't the best... at this point, being a badass isn't a defining characteristic, it's more like a binary quality. And since most of our champs are "yes, I'm a badass <something>" (because who wants to be a not-bad-ass?), it's kind of a meaningless term. That's totally fair, and for what it's worth, I do think our approach to champs is more nuanced than "guys! guys! let's make a badass!". Maybe our messaging could do better at touching on WHY they're a badass though.

And now that I've used the word badass to death, on to the rest of your post:

This is awesome and super helpful, and I agree with the general point you're making. Looking back to Lissandra, the ones that I'd say stand out as "bringing themselves to the roster" are:

Lucian Jinx Ekko (so 3 of the last 15)

Braum is kind of halfway between man and myth in my eyes, but probably doesn't count here.

The rest seem to be important either because of something that happened to them (Yasuo Kalista Azir) or because of their otherworldly/demi-godlike powers (Aatrox Lissandra Velkoz), or simply by existing (Gnar RekSai). And then of course, we have our "year of the myth" champs.

So yeah, probably more of a balance that we can strike here. I really appreciate you linking to examples - that was really helpful. To help me get an even better understanding, which of the following would you consider a champion as opposed to a legend (and why)?

Zed Nami Malzahar Darius Varus TwistedFate

Hellioning4 votes

I'd say that all of those are champions, bar maybe Malz and Varus

Zed made a conscious decision to do what he did and go against the grain, Nami explicitly went 'well this prophecy thing isn't working, guess I gotta do it myself', Darius is a self-made paragon of Noxus, and TF is well known and well-connected to his location, especially since his magic seems to be natural now.

Malz and Varus, with their connection to non-Runeterran concepts, tend to blur the line a bit. They aren't completely out of touch with Runeterra, and Varus especially is still connected with his homeland, but they aren't normal.

KING OF MASKS1 votes

Does a character have to be "normal" to be considered a champion? What's the difference between TF's magic and Malzaguy's void infusion?

I would argue Malzahar can be considered a champion; he's definitely not "self-made," instead being very much in line with fate and predestination. But at the same time he's still rooted in the "real" world of Runeterra, rather than the mythical/ethereal realms of Bard and Tammy Kench and suchlike. He's the equivalent of the doomsayer on the street corner, but with actual power to back up his promises of apocalypse, so people react to him with "Oh shit, this (Malza)guy's legit" instead of skepticism.

Ralanr2 votes

I think it's based around what they have done or are known for.

Wolfeur2 votes

Giving ideas as they come, can be badly constructed

Legend feels more about something ancient, a character who is extraordinarily above the rest or a character who has stories told about them.

The ones I feel are the closest to a legend would be Malzahar, who is kind of a "prophet", then tends toward the kind of person we hear about more than we actually see, and Nami, who is the chosen one and will become a legend in the history of her people.

Unlike champions, legends typically have great power that is not caused by their skill in a field, but by an aptitude got by accident or given by a superior force. Champions get their title by natural aptitude and/or good training.

Those who are the closest to champions are Darius and Twisted Fate. Both have great aptitudes they trained and have recognition, but they are not destined to a particular, extraordinary life and don't have stories about them.

Legends are one-of-a-kind and write history, champions are the best among "ordinary" people but are known in the present only and can be overshadowed by a better champion.

Legends are known for what they are and/or what they did, while champions are known for their potential. Malzahar is THE void prophet, Nami is THE tidecaller, Aang is THE Avatar (well, the one that ended the hundred-year war). Darius is a great general but unless he realizes such a change in Noxus that it revolutionizes the whole Empire for an extended duration, he won't become a legend. As for Twisted Fate, he is a very talented mage and trickster, but he is a nobody for most people and did nothing to come out of the ordinary.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Twisted Fate is probably a famous con artist. No con too big, no escape too impossible. He's a legend. Darius is a living legend among his people.

Ralanr1 votes

Darius is probably the paragon of the Noxian way of life. A damn national hero.

KING OF MASKS2 votes

No, Sion is (or was) the paragon of the Noxian way of life: a true "son of Noxus," as his relaunched lore tells us. Darius is just the current Hand of Noxus; which does make him very exceptional, but not on the same level of national reverence as Sion.

Edit: As an aside, I would argue that despite his normal, mortal, human origins, Sion is more of a legend than he is a champion. He has transcended those origins both metaphorically and literally; metaphorically, in the sense that he's become memorialized as the epitome of everything a Noxian warrior can and should be, and literally in the sense that he's been brought back as a towering colossus that wrecks entire armies. If that ain't legendary I don't know what is.

I was just using the terms that ItemsGuy used, to help distinguish how a character might exist/be perceived in Runeterra. I don't think there's a major difference "in Riot's eyes" here, but having the different terms is nice for helping to see more of what you're all looking for!

I see it this way: champion or legend doesn't really have to do with powers or abilities. From my perspective, a champion is someone who has a life to live, while a legend is more... one-dimensional isn't the right word... I guess more apart from the world.

So, a list of champions would be: Ashe Caitlyn Corki Diana DrMundo TwistedFate Lux Ekko Heimerdinger

While legends would be more like: Aatrox Bard Fiddlesticks Kindred Mordekaiser TahmKench ZileanKayleMorgana

I guess that means I sort of think there is a third category too... Something more like "marvels" that fit in between champions and legends, like: Ahri Alistar Amumu Braum Chogath Lulu KogMaw Rengar Lissandra Nautilus Skarner RekSai just to name a few.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on that metric--it seems agency has a lot to do with it (I'd even argue that Zilean, Kayle, and Morgana are more champions than legends, since they do have their own ambitions and goals, as well as the potential to change--whereas Aatrox and Bard are forces of nature that do their thing regardless of the world around them, who haven't changed and likely never will).

Although even within the marvels, you have some characteristic or motive to latch onto--Ahri wants to become human, Alistar is a minotaur-turned-slave-turned-philanthropist, Amumu longs for friendship, Braum has a warm heart in the coldest of environments, Nautilus seeks vengeance on people who were likely long dead by the time he reached the surface, etc. You could easily imagine scenarios where they interact with other characters and come out at least slightly different, whether that's Amumu making friends with the aimlessly roaming Rammus, Braum facing internal conflict as Ashe and Sejuani prepare for civil war, Nautilus learning to live as he is under Miss Fortune's flag after realizing the futility of vengeance, and so on.

There can be a surprising amount of humanity in superhuman or inhuman characters, it's just unfortunate that in Riot's recent trend, this hasn't really been capitalized upon!

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Probably not your intent, but why say Ekko? He doesn't have much impact so far on the city or world. He's gifted, but relatively low key. Is that the type of champion we'll expect in the future?

Called out Ekko specifically because he's the outlier from the "year of the myth" we've had. Where Bard/Kindred impact the whole world, Ekko is very localized to his area.

That said, you could substitute Jarvan IV or Swain in that analogy - the key thing is the nature and reach of their impact, not necessarily the degree of impact (if that makes sense).

KING OF MASKS3 votes

This is just my opinion but I feel like Swain definitely doesn't fit that analogy; not only is he the leader of one of the more powerful city-states (or countries, or empires, or whatever Noxus is post-retcon) and thus has a direct influence on the geopolitics of the entire continent, he's also a magical mystical demon bird creature (similar to Tahm, I think) who almost certainly has some influence on the more mythical/ethereal realms of Bard/Kindred/etc.

So basically, while his public face is that of an extraordinarily talented general and tactician with a weird penchant for birds, he's actually operating on many more levels of existence than ordinary people are aware of.
