A Plea to the Lore Department
I really am not sure how to start this so how about this. I love the champs. I love Yasuo I love Aatrox I love most of the champs. The champions are what makes me want to play league. Why? Because when I play champions I AM that champion. Heck people even identify you by calling you the champion you play adding immersion to it in its own way. I become important to the world or Runeterria as the incredible combatant. When I play Aatrox I'm the borderline god of war. When I play Yasuo I'm a man with an arrogant tongue who is pondering his place in the world. When I play Xerath I am a being of near infinite power.
Which is why new champs are disheartening. Not all of them are like this but take Ekko for example. He's a kid who has a device he made just cause and runs around Zaun trying to clean things up. Ok cool that makes for an interesting narrative just like the seconds trailer and the comic. But that doesn't flesh out WHO Ekko IS. Again when I play Aatrox I know my identity. I am a being who loves war and thrives in it. All of my dialogue suggests this as well as my background.
Then theres Ekko. His background has a lot of implied narrative that could be really interesting if fleshed out more to how it affects him in the present rather than "time doesn't heal all wounds". Ok cool. Something happened he couldn't fix. Whats he doing about it now. Cleaning up Zaun? Again thats only implied in his dialogue. Barely. Ekko doesn't have the characterization Aatrox does. Ekko is a kid running around with a time machine with the only reason being "just cause".
Not all the champions are like this. Bard does a decent job of you saying "oh I'm this god thing that has incredible power". Azir is the emperor. They both have purpose and feel like they have purpose even if their exact purpose is very iffy with the little amount of lore on them all kinda impled. Tahm Kench, on the other hand just likes to eat people.
I know you're probably sick of hearing us complain about the lore. But how hard is it to write a paragraph and then later retcon it again if you REALLY want to change it again.
Tl;dr Some of the characters need more fleshing out in order to make their general characterization meaningful beyond "just cause thats how they are"
