Anyone worried that Demacia will become the blandest region?

I know that we're still waiting for lore, but so far it seems like every other region has either an internal, external, or both forms of conflict. I don't even see the point of Demacia vs. Noxus since Demacia is holed up in the mountains.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about Demacia having enough internal and external conflicts. They're there, and have a variety of reasons. And Noxus isn't the only other region Demacia would be concerned about. Have I teased enough yet?

Hmm.

Yup, feels about right.

Well I mean Noxus still has huge incentive to take over Demacia considering how resource rich their lands are comparatively to the empire's, but Noxus also has other things to consider, such as potentially re-invading Ionia with different strategies, taking over more of the Southern Continent, potentially taking over Piltover, getting more of a handle on this whole "hextech" business, etc, so it's not like that conflict is the defacto storyling for Noxus anymore when it comes to interacting with other nations.

Just because Demacia's sticking to itself doesn't mean it's devoid of interaction with other areas of the world. I mean Ionia was that for ages and now look at it; enemies with Noxus, kind interested in Piltover and their hextech, presumably got Bilgewater pirates to deal with, etc. Demacia's at least gonna have Freljordians to compliment the Noxian attacks.

There's probably a lot more internal struggle in Demacia atm considering how the champions are. We see folks like Taric and Jarvan showcasing a different kind of thought process that's counter to Demacia's dogmatic traditions and policies, and you've got champions within Demacia that by their very nature question their conventional thinking, such as Lux, Poppy, Galio, Sona, Shyvana, Quinn, potentially Xin Zhao, etc. I mean let's look at that for a second:

  • Lux is a sorceress noble in a society that sorta distrusts magic
  • Poppy's a yordle, something that Demacians are probably very wary about and yet she embodies the things they exemplify
  • Galio was made by them, holds their beliefs but is also magic and inhuman, something that likely worries Demacians
  • Sona's a noblewoman who is also potentially innately magical and an immigrant, and even without being innately magical she has an incredibly potent magical instrument, so who knows what's going on with her
  • Shyvana's a confidant of the prince and would be seen by many as a monster
  • Quinn's was born in the sticks and yet serves directly under (or close to this) Jarvan IV, which likely made some folks shake their heads
  • Xin Zhao's an immigrant too, though of unknown origin, and yet became seneschal of Demacia's monarchy.

I feel like Demacia's got a lot of potential thinking to do about how it considers itself and its place in the world. For that reason I'd say J4's perhaps the most important character in the overall Demacia narrative at the moment, if this line of thinking has anything going for it. I'd say that's a pretty interesting story.

tl;dr Demacia's a nation of folks wary about magic and insular, but also has magical folks and immigrants within their aristocracy, has magical beings guarding its borders and has its prince having good friend in what amounts to a peasant girl and a half bred monster. A lot of story potential there.

I kinda agree here, most nations have their own conflicts, but demacia seems pretty stable.

But then again you have to keep in mind that Demacia barely got any lore at all since the retcon.

My only major worry with Demacia is that, in their attempts to make Noxus less mustache-twirlingly evil, which was a big community complaint that Riot seems to be really trying to fix, they'll end up making Demacia the obvious villains.

They could go from "rigid but fair" to "kill everyone who puts a toe out of line", but with how solid the region reworks have been, I'm not super worried about it.

I really don't feel Demacia will be bland.

Just by their art pieces in the Universe tab you can see the grandeur and splender the place as to offer.

I have high hopes.

After all there is a reason Demacians yell DEMACIA!!!

Demacia probably has some of the most eclectic cast of characters actually.

You have the righteous champions of justice with Garen, Lux, Poppy, Xin, Quinn and Jarvan. I'd say each of them represent the pinnacle of Demacian society with regards to their strengths and devotion to their country. But then you have Fiora, the estranged noble who is carving a bloody path throughout Demacian nobility to restore (and possibly elevate) her house's name - by right of law I might add.

Vayne and Lucian are also both interesting figures, as they act specifically against the occult and creatures of the shadow isles as killers of a sort. Though they may be acting in the interest of the living, who knows if there isn't a deeper meaning behind their hunt.

It's worth noting that Taric was also Demacian, and his failure as a commander sentenced him to an exile which should have resulted in his death.

I feel as though Demacian society is a lot more ruthless than their ideals would make you believe. They boast that they stand for courage, justice, etc, but in truth there are a lot of parallels between them and Noxus. I would merely argue that where Noxus is an expansionist empire, Demacia is more isolationist.

I am.

Something I like about the recent lore updates is that each of the locations since the Freljord updates (with a few obvious exceptions - see Shadow Isles) have taken some major idea (rising power in the Freljord, ambition in Bilgewater, scientific progress in Piltover and 'rebellion against the system' in Zaun) and shown us both its good and bad sides. In Piltover you have major scientific advances that unquestionably have made the lives of its citizens better, but you also have an elitist aristocracy that is completely willing to dump its s#@$ onto Zaun (literally, in one case). Sejuani and Ashe represent the good/ugly aspects of their respective ideals, and also show glaring holes in the other's ideas. (Lissandra far less so) Targon took religious faith and turned it up to 11 with the Aspects, Shurima wants to Make Shurima Great Again, etc etc. The updates have introduced intrigue and nuance without removing what made the regions interesting and special in the first place.

Demacia even in the old lore was big on tradition and honor; they're the archetypal 'shining city on the hill' (or at least see themselves as such). My big concern is how they're going to handle "tradition and honor" as concepts in Demacia; Fiora's lore hinted that the tradition and customs are there primarily to cover up how bloody the city actually is; what I liked about it was that the traditions were still considered important and worth following, but that could easily just be Fiora's coloring of the situation.

I'm worried that they're either going to make Demacia's attitude entirely a facade (imo weakening them as a faction in the process), make them unquestionably wrong (as "traditional" nations often are) or pull an Ultramarines and have everything interesting be s#@$ that breaks from Demacia's customs.

This here, from Demacia's page:

Some suggest that the golden age of Demacia has passed and unless it is able to adapt to a changing world – something many believe it is simply incapable of doing – that its decline is inevitable.

I'm not saying this isn't a realistic way for a nation built on tradition to begin to fall, but it's also very predictable and generic. It might be interesting if Demacia had an actual chance of falling but because it's pretty integral to the League of Legends lore it's probably not gonna. ('course I could be wrong)

Does that mean Noxus would be...the spiciest???

Sorry. I'll leave.
