Now that GP is (possibly) dead...

Tread lightly. Someone at Riot has mentioned that champions might die in their lores now. Tread very, very carefully. GP didn't really have an identity pre-rework. It was just, "Pirate." And post rework, no one had time to get attached to GP. So MOST people didn't care that he died (I personally am a little bummed about it, he was pretty badass and I like him a hell of a lot more than MF, but it's k)

Be very careful about how you proceed, I know that I would get extremely agitated if you killed off my favorite characters.

Inb4 the forums are full of requests for the lore team to kill off this or that character. Teemo will be a popular pick... but I personally want to see Riven , Fizz , and Tryndamere bite it.

I doubt he's dead. Narratively, it'd just be a bad move. He's supposed to be a major player in Bilgewater politics, and since his rework retconned pretty much his entire character, he was also more or less a new character altogether. Killing him off in such a anticlimatic, nonchalant fashion would just be infuriating to people getting to like his character, as well as removing one big part that could make Bilgewater more intriguing. It's bad form to kill characters while they still have plenty of stories to tell.

Personally, I think he'll live. He'll probably survive the destruction of the Dead Pool, and wake up from a coma some time later. Because Gangplank having to fight his way back to the top is a far more interesting story than just a corpse.
