I was reading up the lore of League today.Back in S2 and S3 summoners were a thing which is why the characters in game were called 'Champions".However, now that summoners are no longer a thing, should they still be called "Champions"?
Sharjo6 votesWell I mean champion as a term has a pretty broad description, and I'd say most if not all of League's roster can count as folks championing something, be it a nation, a people, an ideology/movement or whatever suits them.

Sharjo1 votesI'm stretching the scope of the word champion here, but the definition of: "vigorously support or defend the cause of" and "a person who vigorously supports or defends a person or cause" could be applied to their families.
Alternatively, the scope of their story could showcase how they come to champion something as they develop and literally grow.

Therefore they deserve to be called champions. They are the best of the best at what they are doing.

Not really for all of them... many of them are unknown random people, like Ekko for example. And some of them are MORE than a simply "champion", like godlike beings like Bard or Aurelion... some others are demon like creatures like chogath or tahm

Yes: Darius is a General and Right hand of Swain, so, he is actually an important political figure in the lore.
But Ekko, even if he invented a time machine, still unknown for the most of people in Zaun and Piltover... he IS a random dude from the street for most of the people because they dont even notice his ability of "time travel".

In my opinion: No, it doesn't. The world best assassin could be able to completely hide his identity. In that sense, when he is walking on a street, he is just a random dude for everyone seeing him. Because nobody knows that he is the world best assassin. Does that mean he isn't exceptional in what he is doing? No, it doesn't.
Ekko isn't well known. That doesn't make him less exceptional. He is able to travel back in time, able to do things no one else is able to in his place. That clearly makes him exceptional. I never said that the person has to be politically important. Just that they are exceptional, they are different from the majority of people in their world. And that absolutely applies to Ekko.

The thing is that "Champion" is a "title", if there is no one to call you like that, then you can't be called as such. That is what happens with Ekko, people cant call him a "Champion" if they dont know what he can do.
An example of this would be Peter Parker, he cant be called a "Super Hero" because, for most of the people in his world, he is just a normal guy. Sure, Parker can do amazing things... but Peter is not considered a "Super Hero" by the people. In other hand Spiderman is a "Super Hero", because people knows what he can do. (Im not a comic book fan but it was the first example that i took)

Because there actually are people doing so. To call 2 examples directly taken from the lore: Viktor and Dr. Mundo. Both are exceptional themselves, yet in the lore they accept that Ekko has power. Viktor is trying to get him join his side. Dr. Mundo was even able to notice his powers directly, seeing that his attempts to "cure" that guy got reversed.
That already makes 2 we know if. We can't tell right now who else does. And even if people are not able to tell what his powers are, there are people seeing what Ekko is able to do. For example the kids he was hanging out with. They see Ekko beating enemies who are way stronger than him physically. They see him preventing accidents like in that short story we got.
There were rumors that Ekko is actually able to see the future. Which is kinda close to what his original powers are. So: Where is the border? How many people does it need to consider you a champion to be one?
I don't think that is important. They are exceptional beings and even if it is just them knowing about it, they know that they are exceptional, making them selfclaimed champions by heart.

As Cetri pointed out, the kids of Zaun could consider him a "Champion"...
Anyways, the thing is that the term "Champion" is not used in the lore anymore.

DwarvenGiant1 votesI think that changing their name from champions to, say, "heroes" would greatly take away from the game's essence, just as changing the actual game's name, "League of Legends", (and for the same reasons) into something else would. :P
