Possible (long term) solution to the skin disparity
I'm sure everyone's well aware of the memes that are almost canon at this point. Riven and Annie trip over their skins meanwhile Yorick...
I don't expect my solution to fix everything, but I think it would solve the problem of artistry. No one sits down at Riot and says, "Guys, we need an Urgot skin. Get to it." From my understanding of reading reds, it's basically up to a guy who has an Urgot daikimakura to draw up the concept and make it reality.
Assuming it's the kind of skin Urgot people want.
In the VERY long run, I'd like a Steam workshop esque system for skins, but for right now, perhaps simply tossing up some early concepts up to the community? Crowd sourcing is probably the best thing for marketing, and leaving the decision up to a single person or even a small team of devs on whether a skin gets made not only will release some meh skins but it will fail to release really awesome skins because they didn't think the community would like them (but they would).
So, infrastructure. How would this work?
I have no idea how frequently the artists at Riot come up with concepts, but perhaps every round or two or five of concepts, you throw them all up onto a special tab of the store. Here, players would look at the concepts and put RP into them (not buy, more on that in a bit). RP would be a small proportion of the tiers we currently have and also leave some feedback. Alternatively, one can X the choice and leave feedback about why you WOULDN'T want to buy the skin. Concepts could be early or they could also have actual components to see if it translates well into a 3d environment from paper.
Why would players do this? Incentives:
- If a player deposits RP into a skin that launches (before the green light that this is happening), they can now buy the skin at a discount equal to 200% of their deposit. If a player deposits 375 RP into a skin that eventually launches for 750, they get it for free. If you deposit more than is required, you get a RP rebate.
- Purchasing a skin you have supported (deposit before green light) will give you a legacy border for that skin that no one else can get. Ever.
- Unlockables for successful backing of X number of skins could be chests or special skins.
Why would this be a good metric?
Because once you deposit, you can't withdraw RP until one or two cycles of concepts. This is to prevent people from just fishing for special skins while also allowing you to pull support if a skin goes the wrong way. If a skin gets MOAR epic or E X T R A T H I C C, then you can deposit more RP.
It can be hard to gauge demand from words alone. Instead, let players actually fund projects they want with money and not talk. I know everyone says they want Star Guadian Urgot, but really how many would pay for this? Would they pay 3200 for it? What about only 1350? What if it sounds hilarious in theory but just doesn't work in practice? This system is supposed to address that problem in a way that would be more accurate than just artistic intuition.
