champions with interesting abilities are cool but they are just interesting abilities. There's a lack of feeling for power in the recent mages and the satisfaction of unleashing a devastating ult on an enemy team. I want a meteor storm cast or something not some other gimmicky thing. I wish he could get some caster burst mage. Definitely not like Zoe

It is actually weird how close he is to classic warlock architype. Generally, Riot takes themes and make them their own.

Keepe1 votesWarlocks traditionally draw power from other beings, and Swain is currently doing that in addition to his own abilities. I can draw you countless literary/popculture points, but the long and short of it is he's a Warlock.
I think you may be confusing the classical tropes of Warlocks with Wizards.

Ryze is more like an archmage/wizard.
