What if Evelynn was the Black Rose?

And by that I mean the literal Black Rose, as in the namesake (and possible founder) of the secret organization.

Evelynn Evelynn has always been an interesting specimen to me lore-wise, mostly because not a whole lot is actually said about her. While being a mysterious character is fine, it still sucks that she's so devoid of lore. And, since the retcon took away the Institute of War, so does it take away the small bit of motivation she may have had to do any of what she does (basically she used to curry favor from Summoners to gain influence for unknown reasons), thus making her even MORE of an unknown.

So, I got to thinking (and digging through the wiki), what can Riot do to rewrite Evelynn to make her not only relevant and related to their new vision of their world and those that inhabit it, but a large player in it? Well, why not make her the Black Rose? Yes, that Black Rose, the secret organization within Noxus headed by Leblanc LeBlanc, and that also has ties and connections within the Shadow Isles, where Evelynn has always been rumored to have originated from. Here are some reasons as to why I can see this being plausible:

  • Evelynn's lore suggests that she has something planned, something unknown to all but her, and that it's to be set on the world stage. She's planning something huge, and the Black Rose is all but a mysterious entity that meddles in world affairs from the shadows.

  • Thanks to (old) Riot's insistence that every little thing about her past be shrouded in mystery, this actually allows for many liberties to be taken by Riot's writers, and that includes with her age. Call this a "what if", but would it be that big of a surprise if Evelynn was much, much older than she appeared to be? Note the Black Rose is said to have been around since before Noxus, and any other nation for that matter, was built.

  • "The Black Rose" sounds like a much more accurate descriptor for Evelynn than "the Widowmaker". Evelynn has always been a beautiful (if not sexual) Champion in the eyes of players, but also a very malicious one. The symbol of a black rose says "femme fatale" to me more than anything, as something that's beautiful, but ultimately deadly.

  • Just looking at her, if I had never seen her before and was told she was the namesake/founder of a secret organization known as "The Black Rose", I wouldn't doubt it for a second. She has the "black" skin, her hair can be interpreted as red like a rose's (even though it is closer to a purple or violet), and she even has "thorns" all along her body (albeit on her clothing rather than on her actual body).

All of this is just speculation and ultimately daydreaming on my part, but I thought it was something that could be plausible and honestly pretty neat, giving Evelynn a more integral role in the world, so I decided to share it with you all.

TwistedFate Didn't know you were that old. I guess I'll take my leave then.

Wow that sounds like it would be neat. Even though she doesn't really have a lore anymore I always thought Evelyn was an interesting character. One line always struck out to me. "I've got the touch....." ooh so eerie.

Ok how about this:

Riot didn't really put that much thought into their lore.

This would be interesting, even though Eve has a Shadow Isles vibe to me personally. Unless the black Rose is tied to the Shadow Isles. Though literally anything would be better than her old lore of "Mysterious person does mysterious things mysteriously"

It could be interesting, maybe.

I think to me, though, Evelynn's always been a more primal character than a "set up secret conspiracy" type of character. Her voiceover doesn't lend itself to leadership and organization the way the Black Rose comes across, though she certainly has the look for it.

The other thing is that "spooky humanoid" fits better with the Shadow Isles than into the patriotism of Noxus, which isn't quite so antithetical to life as the SI denizens. I'd like to keep her in the Shadow Isles and have some expansion there.

It would work better if the Black Rose actually does not have the best interests of Noxus in mind, and the Black Rose is set up to undermine them. Elise as a member and whatever abomination Swain has in Beatrice would make useful hooks there.

it doesnt really suck that shes devoid of lore because shes the only champion where it makes sense, shes invisible in game -- this translates into the lore because noone can see her noone knows what she is or what she wants, until riot changed her lore too make her another basic assassin...

Wait... people still READ lore?

I disagree. It's been speculated even by runeterrians themselves that Evelynn has ties with the Shadow Isles. Whenever they do decide to give her lore, it should remain related to her mysterious ties with the Shadow Isles. Let's not re-retcon Evelynn to Noxus or have anyone new found relations with the black rose members.

So long as they also scrap that relationship with Twisted Fate.

That was just stupid and made no sense. And seemed very out of character (from what little there was, anyway).

Only +1 if it can be incorporated into the old "Master Lore" (which I do not see a conflict myself)...
