Varus's title, Arrow of Retribution, no longer makes sense

His story isn't about revenge anymore, so this title is archaic I think I'm not sure what to change it to though

He is about revenge. The Darkin, which is Varus, wants to reunite his remaining Darkin brothers and sister and take revenge upon humanity for imprisoning them in these weapons.

No idea why you where downvoted (i cant vote in this board), but you are right, Varus the darkin wants to take revenge upon humanity for killing his race and imprisoning the ones that survived.

The lore never mentioned that the Darkins were the ones that started the war... Maybe they just wanted to be friends of the humans and teach them cool tricks with magic and blood!

Didn't the Darkin cause the war by being drawn to the Rune Wars and other explosive magic happening on runeterra?

In any case, the Darkin have a crazy Warrior god, a lunatic who wants to sow chaos , and an sadistic mass-murder how drives his victims to insanity. They did this BEFORE being sealed up, so even if they had legitimate grievance, they seem to be a race of monsters, or at least encourage their warriors to be sociopathic.

And considering that Vaarus's sister is unlikely to be a civilian, she's probably just as bad as the others.

MAYBE, but all of the other wars have been started by HUMANS.

In all seriousness, genocide is something no one can come back from. The Darkin have decided, for one reason or another, to kill every single living thing on runeterra. If I may paraphrase my favorite Shadow of War quote "Why do the Darkin want to kill ALL the humans. Maybe they Have a problem with one human, or a hundred, but ALL of them? maybe the problem is with them?"

But regardless, from what little information we've got the magic use on Runeterra acted like a beacon that attracted the Darkin's attention.

I'm still not sure why the game needed ANOTHER otherworldly threat. We already had the Void and the Aspects.

It's just that Varus's original story had themes of revenge slowly killing you, turning you into a monster. Not about hypocritical revenge for something that you started.

I can't sympathies with someone like that, he's a good villain, but not that interesting a character.

I'd argue that revenge is just a corruption of justice; I mean, the Noxians commited war crimes agaist a civilian population in both lores if I'm not mistaken. Thr problem is, like the thing in the pit, vengeance is consuming. It's basically an allegory for revenge twisting a man into a monster.

It doesn't have the same ring to it, because Vaarus was sealed because he and his fellow Darkin tried to kill everyone. It's a punishment for their crimes against life itself, of which was completely deserved. It's like a child complaining about being in time out for hitting his brother... by hitting him again. The Darkin are entirely to blame for their situation because they decided to start killing people.

My problem is that it's not the same kind of revenge. Vaarus's revenge is hypocritical, and makes him a villain with no redeeming qualities besides a love of his sister... and if the pattern holds true she will also be a genocidal monster.

Retribution definition -punishment inflicted on someone as vengeance for a wrong or criminal act.

Key word is wrong/criminal act. The Darkin don't get to wave the retribution flag since they instigated the whole thing but trying to kill the people of Runeterra. New Varus just wants to kill people cause that was why he came here in the first place. Saying what he is doing now is Retribution is total hypocrisy on this part.

OP is partially right, New Varus has 0 to do with retribution, just plain old murder venegence cause he tried to kill them all a long time ago. Yet another reason why New Varus has nothing to do with old Varus
