Why Varus's new lore was doomed to fail.

Honest, just felt like making this because it's still being discussed among people. However, rather than just retread the same topics (Blah blah gay blah blah old lore), I instead want to chart the timeline of how this happened and why Varus's new lore never really had a chance. This isn't to berate or bash anyone that likes the new lore. Rather, it's to point out the expectations and how it ultimately led to the major pains a lot of players feel with Varus's lore change. With that said, we have to start at the beginning:

##The Prelude: Who Varus was and His Origin.

To start, we have to dive all the way back to Varus's inception. Varus was made around mid-Season 2 and was the first League champion to receive the new system of skins, with Riot giving Varus only one release skin. Varus also serves special mention because he was a design and collaboration with the artists at Penny Arcade. While in hindsight it doesn't seem like a big deal, this was one of the major signs that League was growing bigger. A major webcomic team, perhaps the most major, was willing to sit down and work with Riot for a teaser. I'd argue that this might have even introduced new people to league from Penny-Arcade.

Varus's original story, if you didn't know, was simple but effective: A brilliant Ionian archer during the Ionia-Noxus war, Varus had to defend the Pit of Pallas from the invaders. While Varus succeeded, his goal was a phyrric victory; His home had been destroyed and his loved ones, including his wife and child, were slain by Noxus. Forsaking everything and realizing there was nothing gained in his victory, Varus gave himself to the corruption to hunt down and slay Noxians in retribution. The corruption would one day kill him but, until then, he would slay any who stood in his way.

Of course, while some would argue it's generic, it was a story that resonated with people. A father and husband who had lost everything going on a crusade of vengeance because there was nothing left to fight for. Of course, Varus was also had people wondering about him in massive speculation threads. The flames only grew hotter when Aatrox was released and the idea of the Darkin being weapons came out. After all, Varus was the only champion in league who had an organic and "corrupting" weapon. With lore reworks coming, Varus seemed prime to be inducted into the darkin fold. People questioned about how Varus could be changed and how his darkin weapon could work with his story.

That's when, about two weeks ago, Varus's new lore snipping appeared.

##The Beginning: Varus's Teaser on the PBE

On the PBE, a handful of champions all had lore updates. Some were like Aatrox, just adding to his background and expanding on his darkin origin. Some were like Nautilus, who had radical changes but shrouded them in mystery. Then we get Varus...

One of the ancient race of darkin, Varus was a deadly killer who loved to torment his foes, driving them almost to insanity before delivering the killing arrow. He was imprisoned at the end of the Darkin War, but escaped centuries later in the remade flesh of two Ionian hunters—they had unwittingly released him, cursed to bear the bow containing his bound essence. Varus now seeks out those who trapped him in order to enact his brutal vengeance, but the mortals' souls within him still resist every step of the way.

Naturally, people flipped out. But why was Varus so strongly detested rather than, say, Nautilus. Not to say Nautilus didn't have detractors but the outcry for Varus was far louder. This goes back to the prelude: Varus was a character people sympathized with and saw as a dark, tragic anti-hero. This also wasn't a lore change to the degree of, say, Galio or Urgot who had changes made but retained aspects of who they were such as Galio being unable to protect those, the idea of Durand and Galio being an enchanted golem who protected Demacia.

This is where we get to Riot's response from DyQuill:

This is pretty close to the full narrative - but there's a few more twists (and a ton more context) that's missing from the bio pasted by OP. Honestly - it sucks that this is the first encounter you all are having with the new narrative. I hope it doesn't ultimately color your impression of it, but I get how jarring this is. Let me know if I can help answer anything in the meantime, tho.

I made a thread about this before but you can understand that the only reassurance here is "just wait and see". Sure, you can't get into too much spoilers, but it did nothing to ease people's concerns. It made people FEAR for Varus, not be excited that he was getting expanded. I think this comment is also quite fascinating:

Can't speak to how Trundle was handled (before my time at Riot), but regardless - that's not about to happen here, and you can hold us to it.

For those who weren't here for Trundle, Trundle was originally an ugly, disgusting troll who diseased and debuffed opponents with sickness. Yet his story didn't go anywhere and Trundle ended up being in limbo, without a clear goal other than "just live". That's when he was retconned/changed to be an ice torll from the freljord. Sure, Varus wasn't as major, but it was definitely a painpoint for people.

Then we get to the BIG REVEAL.

##The Release: Varus's Comic and Video are Published.

W e w lads. So as it'll come up, let's just address the elephant in the room: Yes, Varus is technically gay. Yes, some people chose to read this as diversity-baiting and garnering sympathy/praise from LGBT groups for representation. That's not the important part about this but it's one factor which has upset people. It pales in comparison, however, to what has become of Varus.

Whereas Riot was insistent that this was a small teaser, implying that fans of Varus's original lore would be happy, this didn't retain much:

  • Ionian temple attacked by Noxus
  • Varus Two Archers give themselves to the "corruption"
  • Varus is reborn and hunts down Noxians.

As you can see, pretty much nothing has been retained from Varus's original lore. Only the most basic of story-beats had been retained. The additional irony is that Varus's old lore could be implemented, but we'll get to that in the next section. The response, of course, has been heavily mixed: Some people praise the new lore and greatly enjoy the video and comic. Others detest it and hate the direction Riot went with Varus. Rather than try to pick a side, I want to move past that and focus on where Varus is now and the "damage" this did to players.

##The Backlash: Varusmaggeddon 2017

Now let's dive into the complaints while avoiding the LGBT baiting, because the more interesting fact is old Varus's lore compared to his new one:

First and foremost, Varus's old lore was not in a state of disrepair. Trundle's old lore was radically changed but you could justify it that Riot wrote themselves into a corner, with any new challenges to Trundle appearing as a deus ex machina to keep Trundle active. Varus didn't have this problem. Varus had ways and possible story avenues to explore, with or without the darkin. For example:

  • Meeting the Noxian Commander who ordered the attack on Pallas.
  • Varus's weakening grip on his own body and the darkin slowly overtaking him (unlike Kayn who actively wrestles for control.)
  • Varus coming to terms with his loss and finding acceptance.
  • etc.

Hell, you could even close off Varus's old storyline and say that the original Varus finally died, giving into corruption and becoming the next darkin. A tragic end, for sure, but one that could give sorrowful closure to Varus fans who likely understood that Varus was a doomed hero, a character who was not going to find a happy ending. The key point is that you could work with the new lore. Instead, Riot took a cleaver and cut out every aspect of the old lore, then used paint to color it like Varus.

The second issue is that Varus's character is nothing like the old one. Old Varus was a bitter, scarred man who had lost everything and wished for retribution. Varus knew he was damned and was going to punish as many perpetrators he could. Varus was a candle, burning brightly that would one day sink into darkness. New Varus pines for vengeance...sort of. The two people inhabiting Varus's mind instead wrestle control from the darkin to force his murderous rampage to be slowed and halted. Sure, there's more hope for a happier ending to the story...but that's not what Varus was about.

This is the biggest misstep in the story and why I feel Varus players are so upset: Varus's character arc went from a tragic figure who fell down the mountain and accepted his fate to a character who had fallen but was still going to climb the mountain. There's an air of hope surrounding Varus's character arc that he can find peace and maybe redemption, something completely absent from old Varus. And let's be clear that this has nothing to do with being gay or straight. If you changed Varus's wife to a husband, the story would roughly be the same and the backlash wouldn't be nearly as severe. It's a combination of that as well as the immense story changes that have brought about the ire of many Varus fans.

And let's remember: Varus fans are old. Varus fans are people who could have played him since Season 2. This would be like telling Caitlyn fans that her old arc doesn't need closure.

##The Future: "Varus'd"

When something cataclysmic happens to a League character, their name often becomes synonymous with the flaw or the pain that happened. To be "Olaf'd" is to have Riot so utterly crush your kit that you're relegated to Z tier from the S-to-A tier you sat at. To be "Evelynn'd" is to be kept in a state of disrepair because Riot has no idea what to do with you. To be "Renekton'd" is to be shown stronger in your preview spotlight than you are on release, albeit this doesn't happen anymore.

In my mind, players are going to think of this as being "Varus'd". To have major aspects of your original lore replaced and overwritten with someone that the lore team might consider stronger (and hell, may very well be) but at the cost of everything the original character had, was or could be. While sentiments of the lore team had been on the rise thanks to the decent-to-great lore being delivered with the city-updates such as Zaun, Piltover and Bilgewater? This has set the dial back by miles due to the backlash, dislike and worry that I've not really seen since Riot announced the original retcon of League. THAT took years to overcome and people are still upset with how it was handled.

The lore team now has a dark cloud hanging over them. A massive, black splotch on their record that people will always point to. It's because of this that the uphill battle will be even harder to make. Players who used to trust the lore team will now question what they think when they say "just wait and see" while players who didn't/don't now have fresh ammo to use in arguments: The act of being Varus'd.

##TL;DR (But I recommend you read the whole thing.)

####Varus was an old character who had a workable story. Riot's team opted to throw Varus's story away even though they could have easily tweaked it to fit the new lore. Because of this, players are going to be more distrustful of them "Pulling a Varus" when it comes to character reworks. Varus's new lore was doomed to fail from the beginning because it isn't the Varus people know.

Feel free to provide thoughts and comments.

I honestly have no connection to Varus, though I did find great amusement in the way it was handled. Particularly because, as you so succinctly pointed out, the weapon corrupting and killing Varus was ALREADY a part of his story.

... Why not just let him die, and provide a legacy skin?

It would be the very FIRST champion whose lore finished in order to give way to the new Lore era. His original story arc would be complete. Chapter 1: End. Chapter 2....

It writes itself.

Nonetheless, it's been interesting to watch people talk about this. I always sort've hover around the boards whenever there's a controversy. It's fun to see what kind of thoughts bubble to the surface. And I like this particular collection of thoughts.

Kudos. And I hope that the Varus mains get some kind of treat. Because this was a mean thing for Riot to do. Well, probably more callous, than mean. But I digress.

Very nicely put. I fear that this will all just blow out eventually and Riot will just pat themselves on the back and move on and I hate that. If Varus, a character who had a story that I actually saw people say was pretty good could get ripped apart like this then what could happen to other champs?

Varus was an old character who had a workable story. Riot's team opted to throw Varus's story away even though they could have easily tweaked it to fit the new lore.

There's another topic on the boards about this but I feel it's true, Varus' old lore was completely workable in the post-retcon world. They could have done the three souls in one body thing with Varus' son instead.

Instead they retconned it. Why?

I mean hell, they could take Ahri and instead of a sexy Asian-inspired fox girl they could retcon her into a black-skinned Afro-wearing hyena girl instead. What's the difference? They're both half-animal seductresses right?

To me, it shows a glaring issue with Riot's lore in that the Retcon still affects the lore to this day. Nothing is sacred. What is a "placeholder" and what's not? Miss Fortune and the most recent champions seem canon but are they?

It's been a pretty bad couple of weeks of reception for Riot lore. Zoe and especially Varus were pretty polarizing.

Possible Solutions to Varus' Post-Retcon Reception

I think if the gay couple of more developed. If their human designs were reworked to be much, much MORE distinctive - like literally Valmar and Kai are the blandest champion(ish?) characters shown. I think if they made Valmar (who is the protector of the well, I think?) the one who stays behind at the temple, deciding to fulfill his duty to keep the temple safe first and foremost and praying his lover Kai is alive - then Kai stumbles in and collapses and Valmar realizes he needs the well to take vengeance and save his lover's life - they could have salvaged a lot of Varus' old lore (the themes of duty vs love, decision to willingly take in the corruption for vengeance). It would have also made the dynamic between Kai and Valmar stronger if they were shown their differences in comics through more than just... basically talking heads although that's probably an issue with their bland character designs.

Thank you very much for writing this as a Varus main and player of said champion since Season 2, i appreciate you taking the time to explain to all the people that aren't invested in the original lore. It was the lore that drove me to pick him up and stick with him for all these years. As one other post quoted "Beware a man that has nothing to lose" is what defines him. Varus

Yeah I'm bookmarking this. I'm going to need it for when Nautilus and Nocturne get "Varus'd"

The things that bothered me are two:

They said that Varus storyline would be new and unique while keeping the cores of it. But it's niether of it. Old Varus lost everything and the loss was final, nothing to keep him "sane" remained while Val/Kai got eachother and nor Noxus nor Darkin Varus did lay a single finger on Val family. The issue of human conscience vs powerful/bad/mad monster who got your body is the exact same thematic of Atreus vs Pantheon (which we got promised to see when Pantheon new lore was released and ppl crazed out at finding the alien parasite to suppress the Old Pantheon persona).

They said that if they would have got an overall bad feedback from the community they would rethink what they've done. But this a fat lie because they are not going to delete the 2 comics and the music video (the single thing that was objectively good and on really high standards visually and musically) simply because of the resources put in them.

>Link< to the comment:

However, as I've said elsewhere - if new lore gets an overwhelmingly negative reaction from a majority of players, we would consider changing it, no doubt. :-)

Wait nautilus's lore was changed? (checks lore on league wiki) Goddammit this is terrible

similarly to Varus, Nautilus used to be a person with a purpose, both of them were in for revenge and nautilus was on an unending journey, not so much aquatic as just roaming around runeterra attempting to find anyone who may have been responsible for his demise and because of the passage of time probably never finding them, a sad ending that you could feel for. however now he's just a monster just randomly attacking any random ship that passes over him, who can connect with that.

Additionally he discourages using boats in the pirate town PIRATES WITHOUT BOATS*[zombie-brand-mindblown]*

The only good thing i can think of being a good thing for it is that he now has more of a reason (technically) for protecting Bilgewater from the harrowing.

FlameHalbrdOkido12/3/2017, 6:19:54 AM13 votes

I mean out of all the lores that have been changed there always seemed to be a clear reason for the changes that were made

why the changes were either made sense, or there was some merit to them that didnt have flaws inherently attached to them

I know that peeps haven't always like the changes that were made, but at least some aspects of the previous version's character/story remained or were nodded to, like u said. But this one seems like its the worst that its every been, again for the same reasons.

The changes that were made to Varus...they dont make any sense, a similar effect could have been achieved with the other person along with the main guy being the child or the wife, or even as u said: husband.

But in the end it feels like none of it matters, like its a game, arguing about a fictional story withing a game where the story isnt even that important to it...just feels completely pointless, especially when it doesnt seem like Riot really gonna listen or care, or change anything about it.

but alas we just can't help ourselves can we?

While I know for a fact the lore team can do an incredible job expanding on the League universe, and I love their lore comics ... the latest stories about Zoe and new Varus has me worried. Zoe's being so dull and lack luster that it drives me up the wall, and Varus's being changed so drastically while destroying the beloved Varus in the process has me fearful of what they might do to future champions.

Hell, I was pretty pissed when they changed Leona from a kind hearted warrior who wanted to protect people into a merciless follower of her people, with other touches that doesn't suit Leona's personality at all. While it's nowhere near as bad as what Riot did to Varus, that never sat well with me. But, it was a good and fleshed out story at least, despite I didn't agree with what they did to Leona. But Varus? They destroyed everything that Varus stood for and changed him for the sake of changing things up.

I'm cool if Varus himself was gay, but why two dudes inside a body of a Darkin? Three people in one form? I don't care if it was a man & woman within the body, the idea is still weird if not destroying what resembled the old Varus. I feel so bad for those who main and loved Varus, Riot completely ruined what made him admirable in the first place.

Make Varus human again!

Anyways, the OP basically summed up why I can't stand the rework team: I really don't think riot knows about champions they are reworking or care about them, except for CertainlyT of all people. They get a new idea they want to do and instead of create a new champion around that idea, they delete and destroy and old one.

I'd rather riot just create a new champion to fit their new ideas, even if that means riot has to start making more champions again. It's just not worth destroying old champs people love.

I'm glad the short lore got pushed to the PBE early so people realized the complaints are about fundamental changes to the content, not the actual content itself.

ModAcademy Kayn12/3/2017, 10:13:32 AM9 votes

Varus's weakening grip on his own body and the darkin slowly overtaking him (unlike Kayn who actively wrestles for control.)

This is what annoys me. It goes completely against how Riot has already set up Darkin to work in this world, if a Darkin "Slowly" corrupted their user. That is not how it works. Kayn is influenced with his arm and eye because he is actively fighting a battle of will, with Rhaast corrupting his arm up from the scythe.

So, yes, technically the Darkin Corruption can be slowly happening. However this is because of how much Kayn is **resisting **Rhaast. He can't simply take over Kayn's body completely, so it's focused on the long term game. So, with this inference, you must be actively resisting the Darkin for it's effects to be prolonged over time.

Now let's switch back to Varus. Let's say we do have his old Story, and the Pallas is replaced with a Darkin. As seen in Varus's Part 3 comic, Varus is very influential on Val's (or is it Kai...) hatred against the Noxians who mortally wounded his lover. He emphasizes it, allows him to give into it, trying to make him give up, and if it isn't for the voice of reason, he might've given in fully.

So let's see how this relates to Varus's old backstory. Varus desperately wants revenge, willing to throw away his life and future for it. He would most likely Not be actively resisting the Darkin like Kayn does, since he's willingly giving himself up to his own vengeance. Darkin whispers sweet nothings into Varus's ear, Varus goes on Noxian killing rampage, and then Darkin takes over because Varus is actively letting himself fall to hate.

So now you just have Varus completely gone, because of his own need for revenge allowing a Darkin to corrupt him fully. We've known made negative progress on trying to keep Varus alive. He's now dead.

Varus coming to terms with his loss and finding acceptance

Okay? And then what? He tries to find a cure? He devotes himself to something else? He starts actively fighting the Darkin That should've already taken over his body due to how Darkin work? What does his sense of agency become?! The entire point of the tragic backstory of Varus, was that He had no return, why he gave himself up in the first place. You've completely replaced his sense of agency, so what on earth is he going to do?

Especially if it's a Darkin. You think he's ever going to let Varus forget the pain in his heart if it means that Varus might resist him? No! Maybe you can argue that "OH not all Darkin work the same way", but then we might disregard the fact that the new lore on Darkin talk about why they were weapons in the first place, and the Riot comments (cant find em for the life of me) that talked about how they consume hosts for their humanoid forms.

Meeting the Noxian Commander who ordered the attack on Pallas.

Varus, who should already be corrupted, kills said Noxian, and continues his revenge. A man who is willing to throw away his body, soul, and mind to a being he was taught to fear and defend against, is not going to be satisfied with a single man, especially not with a Darkin in his mind. (Despite the fact that Varus should already be dead and the Darkin is in control).

The only way you can get the old story of Varus to continue, is if you drastically alter how Darkin have been set up to work. And then, even if you did, there is still no reason for him to meaningfully interact with other champs. Maybe some NPC, but at that point, Varus becomes a bubble. Or, worse yet, he becomes a purely antagonist character only made to fight Noxian champs that will never resolve in Death for either, due to how this game likes to avoid Champion death.

There is not as nearly as much hope for his old story as people like to believe. Now, you can argue completely about the Family issue about it, but that's not the point. Old Varus would never have the sense of agency to lead himself into a direction for a satisfying resolution of any Character Arc, not without compromising some core aspect of the character.

Edit: Tfw you write the longest post and still can't get OP to notice you

FlameHalbrdOkido12/3/2017, 6:04:30 AM6 votes

All the points that this lore is stronger due to the fact that this sort of emotional, ethical soul fighting dynamic between 2 humans and a Darkin is going on within a body controlled by a Darkin...

It all become pointless when u consider the fact that on their own each of the hunters is weaker than the Darkin, and that only one of them is constantly at odds with the Darkin and the other can be swayed by the Darkin. If the Darkin were to focus all its energies to to purging either the body or mind/soul of the one hunter who is its adversary, then the interesting dynamic disappears and Varus will no longer have a strong lore nor unique niche character wise.

And we know this possiblility is totally possible seeing as how the Darkin itself created this fused body, thus should be able to eject the mind/body of the adverse hunter. We also know that Darkin can and have taken over the control of human minds before, and we also know that the Darkin is stronger than the hunters individually. The Darkin doesnt have to fight both if it only attacks one and the other can be swayed.

I'm going to be blunt and simple:

I think the rewrite is a success and that your interpretation of the "Old" Varus was colored by your own preference bias. It does discuss his family being slain, but it doesn't going into any details of a wife or how children are retained. The only part of the story which "violates" the old story, is that his "family" is slain on the steps, not in the village.

On a Second note: if you're really offended by someone else's construction of their own secondary product (the novels are not the purpose of League, but rather something to add to its longevity and flavor), then you spend an unhealthy amount of your fears and worries on something that truly doesn't matter, and are rather consumed in criticizing someone's art. The passion in the post suggests that maybe, you should put that passion in a real life, rather than caring whether someone tries to make something beautiful out of something demure. Novels are nice. But they are something we pick up, and put down. You act as if the Novel is life and you have none to return to.
