The reason for making Varus into a darkin

Is that riot simply didn't want to waste a darkin slot.

So lets be honest here, with the darkin being sentient weapons it was kinda obvious that the bow of Varus would be retconned into a darkin weapon(which became obvious when Rhaast was released).

However if there are only 5 darkin left, then it would have been a huge waste to have a character in the game that uses a darkin weapon, but who isn't a darkin him-/herself.(or at least has the potential to turn into one like Kayn).

So I think the main motivation for rewriting his story that much was because they wanted to turn Varus into the darkin and to create conflict/differentiate Varus and his hosts,so they gave him the whole "driven by revenge for his lost kind" theme(after all he is the "arrow of vengeance"),while the human(s) that make up his body got a different motivation(saving a loved one). The problem for a lot of people though is that(at least from what we know),there is barely any reason to sympathize with Varus the darkin,as the darkin were appearantly the ones who initiated the war and they all seem to be extremely evil beings that pretty much deserved to be wiped out(heck Varus himself was described as a sadistic killer).

The main place the new Varus lore fails, is that it doesn't convey the same tragedy as before (Val and Kai's tragedy feels lesser), but this is due to the fact that, Val didn't seem know of the pit's evil, whereas old Varus did, imo. The impression I got however at the end of Varus' story, is that the Darkin has his own tragedy to add into the mix, and he is more than just a sadist. This is where the 'sister' comes into play, and the fact that the Darkin are extinct.

Yes the Darkin initiated the War to conquer Runeterra, but even if they were a world conquering race, why would the lost of one world result in their extinction? Saying that their entire army was eliminated is one thing, saying the entire race was eliminated is another. This means that the attack was reversed, and the Darkin world was attacked in retaliation for their trespass on Runeterra.

The Darkins did not account for Targon, and Targon wasn't having any of it. Now, hapless Darkins, not participating in the invasion were targeted. Who knows what happened to them? Did Targon unleash their Aspects on them invading their planet just as the Darkins did to others? Pantheon and other Aspects having their way with the Darkin race. (Personally I see the Essence of War unleashing all of its Aspects on the darkin world, single-handedly killing them off) Worst, did Targon call of Aurelion Sol and had him blow the planet to the dust in a fiery combustion of Stardust and cosmic matter.

All the while, Darkin warriors such as Varus, watched from Runeterra, knowing they had no home to return to even if they had a chance of winning, that they had no home to escape to as they were fighting a losing battle, that possibly thousands of innocents were killed for their trespass, on a world they attacked unknowing of its residence.

There is possibility in Varus' lore.

But if Varus were not related to darkins at all, like in the old lore, there would be an extra slot for a darkin... so, making him a darkin is kinda of a "waste of slot" since the character already existed without being a darkin in first place.

Eh. That seems a bit of a silly reasoning if you ask me.

Which do you think would cause less problems? Completely changing an established character to fit this self imposed limit, or, just saying “Hey I know we said 5, but we had this really amazing idea for another Darkin so we’re going to say it’s 6 now.”

I hope Vladimir is also darkin so we can get all 5 faster
