Rek'Sai, the Void Burrower, revealed

Although this post is a little bit early, i'd just like to point out this new void champion seems to be the first time there's been a name attached to a species from the void. I'm looking forward to hopefully some exploration of a new species of void creatures.

Oooh, an actual species. Makes you wonder if the male Voidborns have species. What if Kha'Zix is just one of many, and there's a giant Kha'Zix-like Void mantis queen out there?

so now we know that the void has dirt.

Her legs look like voidling legs. What if she's an adult voidling? Malzahar is Shurmian too, after all, and if I remember correctly it was at some shrine in the desert that he entered/saw the void? Hnnnng pls be an adult voidling.

Sighs and folds up his "KASSADIN'S DAUGHTER" post-it note

If only...

But seriously, this is cool. First time we've gotten a species of Void creature...maybe there are more of her, lurking in the Void itself? They'd have to be smaller though, since it's been confirmed the Void Champs are one of a kind, except Voidlings, of course.

Uh, I'll just see myself out if I'm the only one, but…Rek'Sai of the Xer'Sai?

I'm reminded of when Xerath was being developed under the codename Magus, and was then given the title "the Magus Ascendant", leading to a lot of jokes about "Magus, the Magus Ascendant". Then Riot came out and announced his name was Xerath, prompting the community to gleefully declare that the new Champion would be "Xerath, the Xerath Ascendant".

Not going to lie, that's still what I call him sometimes. But no one remembers. T_T

I'm so ecstatic for this.

I love how the names of her abilities are actually making way for story, or at least speculation of the mysterious Void. What does being a queen in the Void actually entail? What or who are the Xer'Sai? What is the Void structure/ecosystem like? What is Icathia in relation to Shurima? We could be seeing some lore-love to the Void sooner rather than later.

And if we're theorycrafting, I'd like to point out something I thought was rather interesting. Considering the retcons to Skarner and Shurima, could we be seeing a tie-in with the Brackern to the Voidborn? Rek'Sai seems like she's been in Shurima for quite some time, and Skarner has been moved to be a creature of the deserts there. Has anyone noticed that Rek'Sai's color scheme is very similar to Skarner's - they both have purple, and that could just be an artistic style-choice unrelated to lore, but the shade of purple Rek'Cai has is noticeably different from Kha'Zix, Vel'Koz, Malzahar, and Kassadin's. Rek'Sai also has blue accents on her, again that are very similar to Skarner's. Considering the retcons, what if these "Xer'Sai" are or are related to the Brackern, and Skarner could be a possible descendant of the Voidborn?

A theory I have is that Rek'Sai is a leftover from the Void's earlier invasion on Runeterra, and that she survived & adapted to the deserts of Shurima after the long millenniums. It is quite possible that in that time she somehow produced offspring, and as generations passed, evolution took its course, adapting a portion of these neo/Runeterran-Voidborn into the Brackern.

Isn't Queen of Xer'sai just kind of a joke on Queen of Versailles? Maybe it's more deep than that, lol but Riot likes their jokes, too.

I'm loving the head cannons :D. I came onto the boards to post about the 'family names' theory that can be inferred from Rek'sai's passive. The 'Queen' title though is something I see as a title more than a role. Like, I don't think she's a queen like the queen ant or queen bee but it's more like she's called the queen because she's the most powerful. Going off this I could see Cho'gath being a king of his species considering how intelligent and powerful he seems to be. It's a cold, subtle intelligence though that's overshadowed by hunger.

All in all though, I support the void families theory, Vel'koz perhaps being a unique case as his conscious mind seems to be disconnected from most other void residents.

it may not necessarily be a name it could just be a title the Void Burrower might just be a title for her as a burrower, same as kha'zix the voidreaver, kassadin the void walker, simply put I believe what you think is a name attached to a species may just be a title. unless your seeing something else that you believe to be the name but I don't see any mention in your quote that shows the name of any species besides the desert people

GreenLore11/25/2014, 10:56:49 PM1 votes

yeah i was also a bit confused about the thing of the Xer'sai. I think she might be related to skarner, maybe a rival or something like that(because she could simply burrow into the cavern of the brackern)

Derpling12/13/2014, 8:21:26 PM1 votes

For Void creatures, the first part of their name is there actual name and the second half is their tribe name.

I am really diggin' this champ and wish I hadn't just spent my 7,800 IP on Kalista..she's okay but she sure isn't Rek'Sai.

Interesting how they are getting rid of global ults, then basically give Rek'Sai a global art. Definitely looking forward to exploiting her tunnels.

So she's a Queen meaning there's more of her species (or once was more of her species), something many of us can agree upon. But this also opens up a possible Mr.Rek'Sai, a King of the Xer'Sais. I'm very interedasted.

My notice:

  • Same "Affix" as Xerath, might be just because sounds cool
  • Shurima inhabitant... probably linked to Skarner and its role
  • Might be a sort of Brood-mother Zerg-like monster hence the name of the "race"
