Riot, I'm getting lots of mixed signals from Kled about Noxus history right now
The release of Kled has really, shed some light and shed some shade over WTF is Noxus even about at this point.
I think it's mostly because Riot, you have lumped way, way WAY too much lore centered around Noxus' history, and its really reaching the breaking point.
I'm going to try to piece a rough timeline as best as I can.
We have the era that Aatrox was worshipped during.
We have the era that Mordekaiser and his empire came from.
And then we have Noxus under High Command. And its history is convoluted...
Look at this quote from
's bio:
There have always been those within Noxus who did not agree with the evils perpetrated by the Noxian High Command. The High Command had just put down a coup attempt from the self-proclaimed Crown Prince Raschallion, and a crack down on any form of dissent against the new government was underway. These political and social outcasts, known as the Grey Order, sought to leave their neighbors in peace as they pursued dark arcane knowledge.
The leaders of this outcast society were a married couple: Gregori Hastur, the Grey Warlock, and his wife Amoline, the Shadow Witch.
Annie had Noxian parents. Annie is like 10 years old. How long ago was this coup?
More importantly how does it mesh with the rest of Noxian history?
Boram Darkwill came from a time that High Command wasn't in command. He led a military coup of the royal family (which I'm assuming the Prince Raschallion mentioned is from), then seated himself forever there because he used necromancy to linger. For reference I will call this the First Coup
If Darius grew up in a Noxus with a militaristic and social darwinist culture, that means at least 30-40 years worth of this culture has been established. Via Swain's bio, we can further assume it stretches to 50 - 70 years worth of it because Swain entered the Noxian military as a teenager . So the whole 'modern' military complex already existed even when Swain was young. I'll call this broadly as the Noxus Modern Era
And then Sion's history. Darkwill knew Sion. He then fought in campaigns against Demacia, and presumably was killed by Jarvan IV's dad, or some other ancestor (but likely Jarvan III). Did Sion fight in the First Coup to supplant the Noxus royals? We don't know that much detail. We only know he died by a Jarvan, and that could range from Jarvan I - Jarvan III/IV.
And then Du Couteau. Interesting thing about Du Couteau that people miss:
This bit from
's background/League Judgement:
A porter arrived in the doorway to announce an additional guest. "General Du Couteau is here to see you, Matron."
LeBlanc shot Swain a curious glance. "Send him up," she replied. The porter exited the study. "Du Couteau is that vulgar General's lapdog," she spat. "He will be of no use to us, Jericho."
Perhaps you're mistaken, Deceiver. He is of noble blood," said Swain.
So Du Couteau's family is from the era prior to the First Coup. He is a noble, or at least a descendent of a noble. This also makes Katarina and Cassiopeia be of noble descent by extension.
Now what's interesting is that despite their noble birth, the Du Couteau family became well-respected in post-coup Noxus. So not all the royals were eliminated, and some even attained great status under the High Command's rule.
So then Kled.
Which era does Kled come from? Moreover, what era of Noxus does he actually refer to as being the 'Noxian' he prefers?
He couldn't have come from Modekaiser's era, because there was no Noxus back then, so we can make a cut-off point there.
If he came from the First Coup era, was he on Darkwill's High Command and military side; or the original Noxian nobles and royal family?
If he came from before even that, is Kled referencing the Noxus that was still a feudal society under royal? Would that make Kled a royalist? Yet he is a figure of legend among the modern Noxian rank-and-file right? Kled doesn't come off as a royalist to me. Heck, he might not even have a place in the royal-Noxus, but we don't know what values royal-Noxus had.
He is derogatory towards the 'city Noxians', which also includes Katarina and Cassiopeia who come from noble stock. It might be Kled doesn't know it, or doesn't care because they were obviously raised in the Noxus Modern Era.
He then calls Riven 'pure Noxian girl', which honestly I don't understand because her birth and raising is fairly similar to say, Darius or Talon, who all made do with their lives in a social Darwinist society. In fact, the only defining trait is that she had a sense of morality.
Which is fine, but...coming from Kled...is kinda like being complimented for saving a bunny by a guy choking a man to death. Mixed signals. Or hypocrisy. Or possibly just insanity.
Or Kled was just being a creepy horny Yordle, which as a redneck hick stereotype...is actually plausible...
Anyway, I don't get Kled's beef with any of the other Noxians because I don't have a point of reference to what kind of Noxus he comes from or expects.
Kled is referring to Noxus history we the players do not have access to, or know enough concrete things about. Riot knows its lore is in a mess, releasing champions referring to that fragmented lore doesn't help.
Kled IMO, should have been released AFTER we got a concrete lore basis about Noxus. Like after a big event. Kled only brings more questions with him than answers.
