Swain - Nexus

Interesting to see the insights, though now it feels like any raven motifs in Swain is more like pandering and an afterthought, rather than something of any meaning to the character from the way the insights explains it.

The whole 'Angel of Death' decision reminds me a bit too much of the anime angel of death wings trope too. I'd almost rather he'd keep his feet on the ground while some semi-transparent model of the raven form shadowed his movements, or something.

Also I think this hairstyle and coloring from the original concept art would have prevented #HairGate-ImNotLuciusMalfoy

"This is one of the first champion updates I’ve worked on where I don’t think the original character was actually the biggest touchstone for us."

That is a phenomenally massive mistake. You were supposed to rework an existing champion, not make a new one to fill a slot.

When Riot mentioned the Swain rework, a number of things were instantly mentioned by players as important parts they wanted to preserve. Every one of those elements were either reduced or outright removed when they should have been enhanced and built around.

I was ready to cut swain a little bit of slack on the visuals, but this article is basically just a confession they didn't care about old swain... the fact that they even considered getting rid of the ravens proves that. Seriously ask anyone who swain was before and the answer would be "That guy that turns into a giant bird demon". The fact that they didn't consider ravens core to him is kind of disgusting to be honest.

Can we make sure people reworking champs actually like the original character before they decide what is important for them?

(Also they contradicted their previous statement about his hair by saying he cares more about functionality than appearance and he doesn't care what people think of him.)

I agree that some deeply problematic issues have surfaced from the insights.

Swain had a unique identity before. The designer decided to re-imagine him by catering to the player's imaginations of what a tyrannical dictator should look and sound like, resulting in a bizarre Frankenstien-esque experiment where Swain becomes the epitome of every villain cliche in the book. We have Lucius Malfoy's head on Darth Vader's body with Sephiroth wings, speaking in stereotypical posh English accent. He's supposed to be a war general from Noxus, not the lead villain in a James Bond movie. Even the demon form looks cliche, like Mephistopheles, when it could have looked more crow-like to suit his original design.

The original Swain was also empowering - "crippled and yet more powerful than he appears." He had a physical handicap and it didn't hold him back. Of course it would be more difficult to be on the frontlines with a crutch, but the fact that he is there in spite of that is empowering for anyone with a handicap. Riot's "middle ground" just takes away from Swain's inner strength by fixing his physical handicap unrealistically (by magic). Part of what made Long John Silver from Treasure Island so scary was hearing the approach of his hollow wooden leg. Having one arm on a crutch at all times didn't stop Silver from mercilessly cutting down his enemies. That's what made him scary. In fact, the portrayal of this uniquely fearsome one-legged pirate was so memorable that it created the pirate cliche we know today. James Cameron's movie Avatar made the same mistake. The disabled protagonist had to become "normal" again (by transferring into an alien/robot body and recovering the loss of his legs) in order to save the planet. Then, in order to have a perfect fairy tale ending, he magically gets to remain in his alien body (which was supposed to break down) rather than returning to his disabled one.

Even worse, Swain became normal again by making a pact with a devil. Maybe that's fitting for a Noxian but the subliminal makes me cringe.

And finally the age thing. "Swain is the person on the frontlines leading Noxian troops into battle, inspiring and preparing the soldiers for war. It didn’t make much sense for the one leading the charge to be an elderly guy." Why not? He's Noxian. I thought they were the type who lived for battle, power, and prestige. They want to die on the battle field for Noxus, not retire and move to Fort Lauderdale once they start seeing grays.

I quite dig the "Insights" though. It does help greatly to understand all the process that went into the creation of a champion. Overall they did try to keep the core of the character and i think one of the biggest drawback for players was his "looks" (close to Vlad, not the old cripple) but generally it is still Swain, the character himself had been keept and with a huge promising lore to booth. Basically he just got plastic surgery. Beatrice as well is still here, she went from being by his side to completely absorded by him. If anything, you can even say its in the continuity of old Swain. In the future!

Jesus, thank god they ended up going with the Raven theme, and not cutting it out like they originally had. This might have been the most hated rework if they had gotten rid of the core idea of his character.

So basically he is the god-emperor of Noxus now. Definitely maining him.

Well there it is, they didn't even cared about Swain, they just wanted to make their generic villain leader of noxus " muahaha i'm evil with an english accent "

Initially i was more angry at his kit than his appearance, because all the dots and damage amp was gone, and the ult is not a toggle anymore plus the whole thing feels pretty generic spells with eldritch lightning tacked on it to make it feel like Noxus. But everything feels forced on this rework, it feels like they just wanted to delete Swain from the game plain and simple. It has happened before and it will happen again, I just hope they gonna rework champions i Hate and not champions i Like, at this point this is the only option left. it's like the Galio rework all over again.

"But hey guys he still has wings during his ultimate hope you're happy swain players."
