Hit or Miss
With the recent Champion reveals, I feel the Lore team has really begun to step up their game, in terms of how much they're willing to do to make a champion feel alive. But to tell the truth, I really couldn't care less at this point.
There is no incentive for me to become emotionally attached to any of these champions anymore, outside of raw game play and thematic design. The lore isn't there anymore. Sure, every champion still has their individual personalities, but their stories don't matter when you think about it.
Reading through the League Judgements always made me feel like the champions I was getting to know where seeking something that defined them. You join the LEAGUE OF LEGENDS to gather infamy, power, respect, adoration, and further your own ambitions. There was so much for these individuals to gain, at the cost of their own freedom. They got into it by will, honor, responsibility, or simple madness. There was variation, and that variation said a lot about the champion.
Champions like
who join to try and regain something, or
who were after someone. It said so much about the champion, to learn why they were essentially pledging their lives to this institute. Even helped to further their stories, by granting them a battle field to play out their stories, one that would not result in the permanent deletion of another champion, but still reach conclusion.
I do love the recent advancements the lore team made with
, but it becomes hard to do these with people like
and
or even
and
. I mean, what reason do they have to keep the other alive? Talon rejoices far too much in blood shed and murder to just let Quinn slide off, and I really doubt Shen would simply allow Zed to continue, knowing that he tips the scales of balance, not to mention the motivation of Vengeance both Talon and Shen share.
Yeah you could probably throw in some BS reason out of nowhere. Make Zed suddenly matter to balance or something, and make it so Talon magically can't kill Quinn for whatever political reason. But by doing so you only devalue their purpose.
Even as recent as Kindred, what reason do I have to care about their struggles? They're death incarnate, okay. That's cool. But why are they here exactly? It would have been before that they probably had some reason to be on Runeterra again, making themselves be known to achieve some grand scheme. But now they just exist, and we don't even know if the rest of the world they live on knows about them, or how they can possibly be death without being some all power being. At least with someone like
and
, even
; they gain something from making themselves known. With or without the institute.
But I can't foresee any reason as to why Kindred would want to be revealed to the world. Literally nothing changes for them.
TL:DR - Lore is never going to be complete without the base being set first. Everything is inconsequential if there is no grand playing field for these champions to interact with and have their actions matter.
