League of Legends/Runeterra is missing basic, important things relative to any game's lore!

ModCaptainMårvelous·10/26/2015, 3:36:43 AM·35 votes·2,803 views

As a writer, I (and I'm certain many of you) get stuck when it comes to some simple things in league lore. Below is just a short list of things that League is missing, as well as why they're important to lore and world building:

#"Speak up, I can't understand you!": Runeterra Language

In fantasy, one of the most important things is the flow of language across the world. Right now, we have no idea if everyone in this world speaks the same language or if there's just a main language. Here is the tiny list I can make up based on what characters say in their lines that could be attributed to another language:

  • Common: Basic English. Everyone seems to speak this. Prominent Speakers include everyone.
  • Ionian: A sort of hodgepodge of languages from Eastern Asia. Prominent Speakers include Yasuo Karma
  • Cavespeak: Unga Bunga. Only speaker is Gnar

That's literally all we have right now. We don't even have dialects, although I can think of a few that we've seen:

  • "British" Caitlyn
  • "French" Fiora
  • "Southern" TahmKench
  • Urban/Street/Slang Heavy Vi Ekko Jinx
  • "Serbian" Viktor (Credit to Tesla Effect for this correction!)

We could really use some expansion on this as well. Is Piltover a primarily british-accented place? Is Demacia a combination of various european places? Is Zaun more of an urban slang diction with hints of Russian? Bilgewater have cajun/southern hints? We could really use some expansion on this.

#"What's a god to a non-believer?": Runeterra religions.

We have a few of these but, for a lot of them, you have to either read between the lines or flat-out assume in many cases. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm sure that there are fringe cases that are up for debate:

  • Cult of the Void: Those who worship and bow to the void's power (Malzahar)
  • Shamanism: Respect for elements/spiritual plane (Udyr)
  • The Doctrine of Balance: Pretty much Ionian. Taoism, Hinduism, bits of everything. (Karma Shen LeeSin)
  • The Shadow Isles Bible: Death is good. (Karthus Elise Mordekaiser)
  • The Watchers Quarterly: Watchers are boss yo. (Lissandra)
  • The Power Cosmic: Stars and space above are the greatest power. (Bard Soraka)
  • The Solari/Lunari: At least I think it's a religion? (Leona Diana )

So, as you're probably seeing, about half of what I've listed fall more in line with cults than actual religious beliefs. Do Demacia and Noxus share a psuedo-christian belief system? Does Shurima have a sun-worshipping somewhat egyptian notion of things? Are yordles primarily science-loving and more focused on atheism? DOES RUNETERRA EVEN HAVE A HELL?

#"What do you mean you people?": Runeterra Races

Similar concept to dialects. We see a variety of people with a variety of skin colors but this extends beyond that. We've mostly seen animals and creatures in Runeterra, very little humanoid. Run down of what I was able to compile so far for sentient creatures:

  • Bread and Butter Humans: Garen Lucian Karma Akali
  • Elementals: Janna Malphite Anivia Brand
  • Sentient Constructs: Galio Blitzcrank Orianna Zac
  • Trolls: Trundle
  • Void Beings: RekSai Chogath Velkoz KogMaw
  • Yordles: Teemo Heimerdinger Poppy Tristana
  • Spiritual Beings: Bard Soraka TahmKench Kindred
  • Possible Unique/Last of Kind Beings: Rengar Twitch MonkeyKing Fizz
  • Dragons: Shyvana
  • Darkin: Aatrox Jax (???)
  • Angels: Kayle Morgana
  • Ascended: Azir Xerath Renekton Nasus

Seems like a large list, right? Except, for the size of it, we have so few outside of Yordle, Human and Void-beings. Everything else is either open to interpretation (Is Anivia an elemental or a phoenix? Is Rengar one of a kind or are there tons of him? Are Kayle and Morgana the only remaining angels?) It would serve Riot well to expand on all these, because right now we're not really sure where some of these stand outside of one sentence rundowns. As an example, there are only five darkin...that's it. Do they all look like Aatrox? Is he unique? Is he the same as them? etc.

#"SCIENCE!": Runeterra Technology.

This is pretty standard. We know Piltover/Zaun are tech power houses while everyone else is generally lower tier (although I imagine Zaun/Piltover tech is all over the place, such as televisions and radios), but how far does this go? Do they have cars? Airships? Are guns standard in Piltover/Zaun or something super expensive? Does it border future tech in some areas?

#"Who needs a map?"

I do. Give me a damn map of Runeterra.

#"It's your kids, Marty!": Runeterra Timeline.

This one I wouldn't mind missing out on but a unified and clear timeline of Runeterra would be nice. It's probably not feesible with all the lore restructuring happening but it'd be cool to know where all this takes place on a time scale.

Overall, I enjoy writing in league's space. I find the characters enjoyable and the amount of stories super open to exploration in any number of concepts. However, these little tidbits I don't have continue to add up, warping dialogue. Would they say hell? Does Runeterra have hell? Could Karma understand Ashe if they met in person? Are Demacia and Noxus equal on religion or is this a religious war too. Are trolls common in this world? If I could just even the tiniest clarification on this, it'd be wonderful. Thank you.

{quoted}

  • Dragons: Shyvana

You disgust me, that is not a dragon, she is a half-human... which is different.

Ebonmaw is a Dragon, Ao Shin is a Dragon, Dragon is a Dragon... but Shyvana? she is an ABOMINATION OF THE NATURE

Comparing her with a dragon is like saying that... i dont know... MonkeyKing is a human or something like that.

Personally I'm still waiting for some kind of update to champs who have lore based around the fact the join the League of legends, since it no longer exists in the lore. There are a number of champs who's lore ether practically revolves around the Idea they join the League or it's a large factor about who they become. Without the league:

  • MonkeyKing has no reason to learn Wuju from MasterYi (since Wu promised to learn and one day teach Wuju to a pupil of his own in exchange for Yi introducing Wu to the League) and if he doesn't strike that deal with Yi, his name would still be "Kong" since Yi added "Wu" in honor of that deal
  • Ahri has no way to attain humanity without harming people, so ether she's given up or she's still taking life essences
  • Jax never gets restricted on his using weapons, so he never had to resort to using his lamp
  • LeeSin never accidentally wipes out an entire village with a summoning, causing him to join the Shojin Monastery and setting himself ablaze in a protest, where his eyes got burned out of his sockets.

You made the mistake of thinking Riot cares about lore at all. If people didn't cry about there not being lore, we would never have gotten the Bilgewater thing or anything else. They'll do the bare minimum to get people to shovel all their money into Riot's pockets, and nothing more. Welcome to F2P. ^^

Viktor has a Serbian accent, not a Russian one. He is inspired by the Serbian born inventor, Nikola Tesla. People automatically think its Russian since thats the largest Slavic country to date and the most recognizable to Americans. Viktors lore was inspired by Teslas story, and all his abilities are inventions Tesla thought up, like the laser beam, gravity device, energy shield and ionic storm. Also people thought of him as a weirdo and kind of a mad scientist, just like Viktor is.

So please, can you fix that thing saying its a russian accent, since it is actually a serbian one.

Solid, well-organized thread. It won't do any good though. The horse has been beaten to a pulp by this point.

Really minor nitpick here, but Elise doesn't really follow the same beliefs as most of the SI champs.

Her whole thing is that she's an emissary of the "spider god", Vilemaw, who goes to Runeterra (Noxus specifically, apparently.) and formed a cult based around him. She then takes unwitting acolytes to meet their "God" and go to paradise (The Isles), at which point she feeds them to a giant spider who, in exchange, gives her "her power and seemingly eternal youth".

There's no confirmation Elise is even undead, she's just weird and lives on the Isles. But hey, that's another religion to add. A totally BS one made up by a spider and his half-spider pal, but it's there!

Also, in regards to the last one, a timeline has been confirmed to be on the way by the head of the Lore Department. That's something I'm really interested in too, because League time is goddamn bonkers. For example, Xin Zhao was rescued by and then worked for Jarvan IV's grandfather, but he doesn't look much older than J4 himself.

Caitlyn and Fiora probably have accents because at the time of their developement Riot was probably like "oh why don't just add an accent to make this character "unique"' with out them thinking about the relevance to the lore.

The only way to consolidate this issue is to 1) Remove their accents. 2) Make it fit into the lore.

  1. No chance in hell the community would let this happen.

  2. Given that Caitlyn has an "English" or English inspired accent, I'm going to assume that she comes from a region that speaks a language that would cause her sound like that when speak the Piltoveran language. Same goes for Fiora.

I REALLY want to know more about the Darkin. 5 are left, but only 3 are known to history by name.

"Though these stories remember him as a savior in dark times, Aatrox's true legacy may be a world filled with conflict and strife." So he's like a World Corrupter or something? Aatrox is a legendary warrior, one of only five that remain of an ancient race known as the Darkin." So, are the Darkin immortal or what?

When they existed, what other types of races existed? What caused them to die off (Assuming they were immortal by age, which would make sense in my mind)? ARE they immortal by age (Can live forever, so long as they aren't killed by another source)? Who are the other 5 Darkin? Is Tahm Kench a Darkin? He's listed as an ally on Aatrox's page. Do the other Darkin look like Aartox, or do they all look very different? Are the Darkin actually the weapon, and the body is a possessed being? (This would fit Aatrox's title, 'The Darkin Blade', and it would also explain why Aatrox's blade is seemingly 'Living') Did the Darkin originate on Runeterra, or someplace else? If they did originate in Runeterra, where did they inhabit? Did they make cities and towns like other places seem to? Were they even civilized? Did they have a language? Did they have a religion?

Just some questions I would love answered about Aatrox. I main him, and honestly love his backstory. I would love to know more about him.

There are several writtings that were released after the retcon of IOW.

Runic writting found on most old weapons, stone tablets, old books and such. Since Ryze got his gameplay update and new ability effects, this new type of runic writting has been solidified more, in terms of how it looks. Also new Summoners Rift is littered with it. Strangely enough, Master Arcanist Ziggs and Demon Vi boast this new writting with their ability effects. This writting is linked to almost every location in Valoran when it comes to runic magic, artifacts and conflicts. The new style sttill needs to be incorporated in old item icons and maps such as Crystal Scar, which still uses the old type of runic writtings and which as since been changed.

Tahm Lench/Bilgewater writting, it has a similar style to runic writting, but its more refined and looks Bilgewater-ish , with curved letters reminisent of Bilgewaters architectural design. It can be seen in Tahm Kench The River King promo video.

Ekko/ Zaun writting, looks symbolic in its approach, kinda like a cypher language or scientific symbols. It can be seen on Ekkos splash art.

Noxian writting, looks like old medieval gothic styled writting, with fits with the empires look overall. It can be seen in Aatroxes promo comic/images.

Roman type numerals, while not directly linked with any faction as of now, it is used for counting time in the same way we use it in our world, which means these numerals have to come from a language similar to it. It can be seen on Zileans splash art and abiloty effects, Ekkos promo video and concept art showcassing the Piltover clock head from where he took the baseball bat/ clock hand, and Vis tattoo.

Also while skin relate, I have to also point out Dragonslayer writting showcased in Dragonslayer Pantheon and Braums promo images and the East Asian type of writting shown in the PROJECT: OVERDRIVE video.

Hope this helps you for your thread which is already detailed as it can get :)

Serbiann...with double n? Oh nose, its only one n.( those darn keyboards and them small mobile ones, I know the pain of misclicking all to well) . While Viktor has a Serbian accent (because of the heavy influence from Tesla), when it comes to Zaun, their possible accents would be east european/ slavic accents in general (since a lot of slavic languages have that rough, very strong type of accent because of their cultural, religious and genetic similarities) .The closest analogy to this type of accent in media can be seen with the Quarians from Mass Effect series

Baron Von Bangin10/27/2015, 3:34:51 PM2 votes

Also, Braum and Viktor speak with the same accent.

IS VIKTOR FROM THE FRELJORD???

Probably not.

You didin't mention Skarner's race (It's called Braken or something). He isin't the last of his kind because we know that there are many more lying dormant underground. Well, assuming that the thing Skarner is guarding is the rest of his people.

Jax is a Drakin?!?!?!? What the actual fuck? OP source?

GreenLore10/26/2015, 4:35:10 PM1 votes

The problem with the "other-species thing" is that many champions are simply in the game to provide us with one individual with their species.

Alistar is in the game because they wanted a minotaur champ and needed some excuse for his existence, the same pretty much goes for Trundle Fizz Nami etc.

Though they mentioned that sea hunter aatrox is actually aatrox as a marai(namis race) and that they are able to grow legs via magic, which makes me wonder if they aren't going to merge the marai and fizzs unnamed race into one race.

OK, I'm only going to comment about the 'Races of Runeterra bit' (beecause I've actually studied the somewhat sparse lore there), but:

  1. It's not certain whether or not Janna is a human or something else. It's heavily implied that she's just a really powerful mage who exclusively specializes in magic that manipulates air however.
  2. Malphite, Morgana, Kayle, the Voidlings, and Bard are all directly stated as being from universes outside of Runeterra (at least, in the old lore they are).
  3. Brand is actually a Human posesed by an elemental.
  4. Nocturne is a what in some science fiction is known as a 'mimetic' life form (he's a thought (in this case a nightmare) that gained independent existence), who was forced into reality by the League (again according to the old lore).
  5. Kindred is literally just Runeterra's Grim Reaper.

That's all I can think of right now, although I really like the concept that Jax might be a Darkin (the original Lore stated that there were three, but only Aatrox was known by name to history).

Also, if you look on the wiki, there is a map of runeterra, although that probably got thrown out with the whole JoJ retcon.

Trylobyte10/26/2015, 4:26:36 AM1 votes

Well, as of present lore, a few further observations...

  • Twitch, Fizz, Rammus are all confirmed to be the only ones of their type remaining. Twitch and Rammus are the only ones of their kinds period.
  • We know they have airships. Janna and Zilean both race them.
  • The whole world seems to speak the same language - Quinn could talk to the Freljord folks without a translator, Demacians and Noxians talk all the time, and even the off-worlders have no problems speaking with everyone else. Yordles and off-worlders likely have their own languages but no cause to use them.
  • Angels, void-beings, and yordles are not native to Runeterra. We know there are plenty more where they came from, but that's why there are so few of them.
  • The Ascended are quasi-deific beings that were formerly human. They're not truly their own race. It's possible the Shurimans worship them alongside the sun.
  • Zaun definitely has the highest technology level, far beyond present-day tech given what Viktor, Blitzcrank, and Ekko bring to the table. Piltover is more classical steampunk tech levels, with the exception of Jayce. Why don't other empires adopt this technology? I'd guess it's too expensive to produce and maintain.
  • Humans are the dominant race by a whole hell of a lot. That's why there are so many. From the old map, yordles are isolated to Bandle City on the SE coast.
  • Demacia and Noxus don't appear to have any religion at all, or if they do it's not really important to them.
  • Would the Glorious Evolution count as a religion?

I was told by Jaredan in one of another Lore thread that they're working on an official Timeline of Runeterra right now.

TBakes10/26/2015, 8:05:31 PM1 votes

Honestly, I think most people would really like a map. An accurate map of the world that the characters fall into is a great starting point. Then, as the lore team comes up with material, you can just lay it over the map and just build out the world that way. Points to mark important events, a slider to go up and down the timeline, indications of different regions/borders, etc. The way they had the Bilgewater event would be cool to insert within the points, which you can click on and "enter" the area to learn more information.

I do understand, though, that after you create those boundaries you are kind of limiting the lore team to just working within those spaces. I'm sure there are good reasons for not being more proactive when it comes to lore. I doubt it is blatant neglect.
