I'm actually pretty satisfied with how this turned out. Varus is far more interesting now, and many of his old components are still there. Sure, he doesn't have a wife and kids but there is still humanity being slowly decayed (OR IS IT), and tragedy on both sides (both for the men and the Darkin).
I wish they would update his VO tho.
Implying that his lore had anything to do justice with. It's really not as solid a foundation for a character as people keep thinking it is. It's great as a backstory, but terrible for continuing a story that can resolve Arcs without ending the character.
.....did they hire what was left of mass effect Andromeda's writing team? were royally screwed if so.
His old lore was worse. I care very little for the old Varus since not much was there to care to begin with. At least this new lore still retains the core of what made old Varus, while also fleshing it out so that he isnt a one dimensional "revenge" character.
