Poor guy keeps pushing to save his wife only to narrowly fail every time. Then he comes to the realization that each of his countless attempts have only caused her more and more suffering.
So he actually gives up on saving her and heads off one last time to end the cycle of torment for all parties involved: him, thresh and senna.
That's some serious character development.
Hopefully Lucian gets some respite in the coming lore.

Warwick was a human, but he got experimented on by Singed with al lthat machinery you see on him put on his body, then thrown away as garbage, where he transformed into what he looks like now.
On the other hand, he gives her hope because she knows he's coming for her, and he never stopped trying no matter how many times he failed. Giving up would be the true betrayal, as right now she genuinely believes he's still trying his best.
