Hey!

Wanted to pop in here and explain what's going on with Yorick!

You're right that he hasn't received a skin since launch and his skin catalog only has two skins. We aren't ignoring Yorick, although from the looks of the amount of skins he has, it may appear that way.

For a bit of context here, Yorick needs a rework/update before the Skins team takes him under our wing and gives him more skins.

But why can't you make a skin and give him the rework after? That's the most common question I see when I explain the rework/update situation, and it's a totally valid question.

When a champion is updated (let's use Sion as an example for this), there are a ton of changes made, both in model, as well as the kit. If we were to create a skin for him now, the Champion Update team would need to rip apart the work we did to make it work for the update they create. This could mean making a new set of particles, a new model, etc. It's basically like doing the work twice. So, rather than doing that, the Skins team creates other skins for other champions while we await the go-ahead to work on a new skin. This rule also applied to Poppy (she's eligible for a skin now)! and currently Taric.

The other big reason for doing this is because we don't want players to become attached to a skin and then have it completely re-imagined. So, let's say we put out a Crazy Cat Lady Yorick skin (Rito pls), but with the rework, he didn't have a spell that used your favorite cat model. That may ruin how cool the skin is to you, which is a pretty crappy situation. So, rather than taking away things you love, we hold off on creating them until we've got a solid, shiny, new base to work from, which means the skins you purchase won't be changing any time in the near future.

People need to realize how many people it takes to make a single skin- You have, at the very least, a concept artist, a splash artist, a model artist, a texture artist, and an animator. Occasionally a voice actor too.

There are a LOT of champions in the game. Riot can't possibly make a new skin for everyone's favorite champion all the time, it's just not feasible.

There are a number of problems, historical and current, in the creation of a new Yorick skin:

  1. Yorick is not Riot's favorite champion: Yorick was released at a time when the company was adding a new champion every patch, and the team felt pressured to release Yorick, a champion they weren't fully behind from the start. (For example, Yorick's zombie ult was created a week before release and was originally a combination of Thresh's ult and Karthus's E).

  2. Yorick is difficult to create skins for: Yorick falls under the same "category" as Elise, Zyra and Zac in that there is much more to the champion than the main model itself. The ghouls would each require a new look to differentiate them between each skin, along with the effects. Not that this should have stopped them from doing anything, but...

  3. Yorick was put on a "no promotion" list by Riot: Yorick was removed from the free week rotation nearly three years ago (along with Poppy) and was put on a "no new skins" list soon afterwards. You'll also notice that Yorick's obscured on his Pentakill skin page in the client (He's hidden by his skins on the left side) and was barely mentioned during the 2014 Pentakill event. This lack of promotion also included new skins, which could have been done long before he was put on the rework list. Speaking of which...

  4. Yorick is scheduled for a rework... maybe: Simply put, Yorick's rework has been shifted to the back burner in favor of easier projects, like Sion and Poppy. Taric is supposedly next on the list, with his art assets needing to be cemented at the present time. However, just after Yorick on the "high priority" list is Urgot and there's no guarantee that Riot or ChampUp would finish working on the Gravedigger before starting on the Headman's Pride.

  5. Delivering a skin for Yorick now would only lead to more work for ChampUp: Another champion in the same boat as Yorick was Trundle. The skins team was asked to not make new projects for Trundle until his rework was done in 2013, which leads to...

  6. There's no guarantee that Yorick would remain Yorick after the rework: See Trundle after the Freljord patch. Riot could pull something even bigger than that fiasco and change the green undead brute into a generic necromancer, thus destroying any skins that could have been made.

So, while the skins team is waiting right now for the rework to get done before Yorick is eligible for a new skin (which might come in late 2017 If Sion is any indication), they're also at fault for having never done one beyond his two launch skins.

Riot haven't bothered making skins for Yoric because they'd trying their best to not acknowledge his existence. He's always been a mess, and until they get that sorted out, there'll be no 3rd skin.

What about corporate yorick? I think it sounds really cool! His graves could be little receipts, and the ghouls could be little zombies in business suits and his wall could be a cubicle! I don't know about the ultimate, maybe some big mean looking boss woman? I just thought of this idea and I think it sounds super cool

Good choice on Undertaker Yorick. I think it's the better skin.

They have been planning to rework him for years, so I'm hoping they will start making skins for him after that is completed.

I'm still waiting for a Crazy Cat Lady Yorick skin.

Its one of those cases where its an Older champion and as such needs to be reworked till a new skin comes out. Although they have "lied" about that like with Evelynn. they claim she wasnt getting a new skin till her rework only to have that Safecracker skin. while it is a low tier skin it still a new skin for her. So hopefully we see some new skins its horrible when you have champs with such a low skin count, yet champions who already have loads (Blitz, Annie, Ryze. Ahri, etc) can get more and more.

I understand why more popular champs will get more skins, but it shouldnt mean the older the champ the less skins comes out. Hell im waiting on Taric to get a better skin. his current skin is nice, but we need more. Along with other champions like Yorick, Urgot, Udyr, Lablanc. its crazy. especially when you put into account the community has made some very awesome/detailed skins concept that they could implement (unless its copyright) but chooses not to!

Riot KatyKaos, can you give us an update on any plans for the Yorick rework?

BBQnFootMa55age12/4/2015, 5:10:58 PM1 votes

While i understand that yorick, among other outdated champs in-line for a rework (taric being the first one that comes to mind) it still seems kinda upsetting to see that nothing new will come out for him till his rework drops and while i get it would upend all the effort put into a new skin to be made, its been stated multiple times that yoricks rework isn't likely to happen for at least another year or so. I and every time someone brings up this guy we always get a response akin to, "his kit is out dated and were not sure what we can do to make it new while still being balanced" If we could hear something new other than the standard responses like that it would lend more credibility to the statement that we haven't forgotten Yorick Mori
