In the early ages of Demacia, Balthasar grew up as a promising prince under his father and king. As he grew up, he mastered the fire technique of the sword-- reflecting the power of an erupting volcano with each strike. And as he eventually surpassed his father, and took on kingship as the heir, Demacia reigned in peace under his rule. His subjects were not the wealthiest, nor did they have the strongest army, but their civilians prospered. Their distant neighbor, Noxus, was not an enemy but merely a trading partner, whom they rare made any contact with. Although they lived in poverty, the people of Demacia lived happy lives, as did Balthasar, marrying a young woman to be his queen and raised a young boy to become his heir.

One day, a mysterious clique climbed the stairs to the capital, their cloaks sheathing their identities in darkness. As they walked by the guards, one of the figures merely waved their hands and the guards fell unconscious, falling to the floor as if struck by a sleeping spell. They marched through the corridors until they had reached the throne-room, where Balthasar was busy consulting one of his advisors, rudely interrupted by the group perusing in. Balthasar stood up immediately, demanding an answer for their abruptness.

The first hooded figure revealed himself to be Jarvan Lightshield I, a warlord hailing from the far eastern reaches of Valoran. He spoke few words, very quietly at that, and exclaimed that he would be the new king of Demacia. Enraged by the profound statement, Balthasar approached the individuals, unsheathing his sword and preparing to fight Jarvan in combat, but before he could do so he was struck down by another one of the hooded silhouettes, shooting out a bolt of energy at Balthasar head on. Balthasar was knocked far back from the strike, but when he attempted to gather himself together, he found paws for hands, and a large nose protruding from his face with a soft grey coat and tail. Balthasar was hexed into the form of a hound, rendered defenseless in his new form. They threw him into a sack and tossed him into the Serpentine River, where he was thought out to drown. Overnight, the Jarvans and their associates took over the city state under the noses of it's own denizens, claiming that Balthasar and his wife and child had been killed by bandits in their sleep, as well as claiming that Jarvan Lightshield was the heir to the throne, being a "close friend" to Balthasar. The queen and prince were captured in their sleep, and sold off into slavery, and presumptively lived out rest of their lives as slaves.

Of course, Balthasar did not fall into the hands of death so easily. He escaped the sack that he had been tied in, finding himself upon the shore at the bottom of the river, near the mountainous region of Freljord. As Balthasar roamed for ages, he did not grow old, as the curse had supposedly kept him from doing so, and effectively leaving him to suffer an eternity in solitude. One day, however, as he hunted down a hare for food, he was startled at the sound of a voice. He swung around and entered a combative stance, growling into the distance, until realization struck him as the voice was in his head. For the longest time he fought with the voice in his head, until he realized that he was speaking to the canine side of him-- a spirit used as a curse to turn him into the form that he is. Eventually, he bonded with the spirit, and eventually learned to revert his form back and forth from hound to human at will.

Now that he had regained his form, he sought out aid in retaking his home at the peeks of Mount Targon, where a group of war-like people took refuge. Climbing the rough terrain, he was greeted by a warrior lunging at him with a spear at the summit, engaging into a battle that lasted several days. By the end of the battle, the ground was scorched with flames from Balthasar's sword technique, and both men were gravely wounded. Finding honor in his opponent as a true worthy champion against his might, the warrior introduced himself as Pantheon of the Rakkor, and since then, Balthasar aligned himself with the Rakkor in hopes of once and for all reclaiming his throne.

Balthasar constantly switches between his Human Form and Hound Form during fights, each with their own abilities and skillset. For every 8 non-ultimate spells Balthasar casts, he will transform into the opposite form and gain new bonuses. (Progress will be displayed within his resource bar) Upon activating Man's Best Friend, the stacks counting towards transformation are removed, and abilities do not count towards transforming for the duration of Man's Best Friend.

##Human Form

  • 30% Attack Speed
  • 10% Lifesteal
  • Upon transforming into Human Form, Balthasar's next attack gains 450 range and unleashes a cone of flames towards them, dealing 15 (+3 per level, 66 at Level 18) (+45% AD) physical damage to all enemies it strikes.

##Hound Form

  • 50 (+8 per level, 186 at Level 18) Max Health
  • 2 (+1 per level, 19 at Level 18) Attack Damge
  • 10% Movement Speed
  • Upon transforming into Hound Form, Balthasar's next attack will cause him to dash at his target and bite them critically, slowing them by 20% for 2.5 seconds and dealing an additional 20 (+2 per level, 54 at Level 18 (+50% AD) physical damage.

#Q: Dragon's Fury/Gluttonous Savagery https://www.pvpleaderboard.com/images/icons/ability_warrior_warbringer.png https://nirklars.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/ravage.png?w=590 Cost: No Cost Cooldown (Dragon's Fury): 14 seconds Cooldown (Gluttonous Savagery): 11 seconds

Human Form: Balthasar's next 3 attacks each strike twice, dealing an additional 10/15/20/25/30 (+10% AD) physical damage each attack. While this is active, Balthasar gains 20% attack speed. If all three attacks kill their targets, Dragon's Fury's cooldown is refreshed.

Hound Form: Balthasar's next attack gravely wounds the target, dealing an additional 50/80/110/140/170 (+40% AD) physical damage and causing them to take an additional 5% damage from Balthasar's attacks. If the target is slowed, the attack has 100% critical hit chance and stuns them for 1.5 seconds.

#W: Volcanic Battleground/Flaring Haste https://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/wow.gamepedia.com/1/14/Ability_warrior_bloodnova.png?version=89a2b241b2a068c471259fcbad1bd341 http://cdn.warcraftpets.com/images/wow64/icons/ability/rhyolith/magmaflow_wave.v7337.png Cost: No cost Cooldown (Volcanic Battleground): 16 seconds Cooldown (Flaring Haste): 9 seconds Casting Range (Volcanic Battleground): 450 units AOE Radius: 700 units Dash Range: 450 units Dash Width: 85 units Dash Speed: 1150

Human Form: Balthasar ignites the target area in flames for 8 seconds, increasing damage dealt to enemies by 15/25/35/45/55 (+35% AD). As long as his target is within the flames, Balthasar can attack them regardless of range.

Hound Form: Balthasar dashes forward, dealing 40/80/120/160/200 (+30% AD) physical damage to all enemies he passes through. If activating this ability will transform Balthasar into Human Form, he knocks up all enemies he passes through for 1 second.

#E: Blistering Cyclone/Vigorous Roar http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/5/59/Spell_sandstorm.png/revision/latest?cb=20130306025826 http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/5/5a/Ability_druid_berserk.png/revision/latest?cb=20160217183442 Cost: No cost Cooldown (Blistering Cyclone): 16 seconds Cooldown (Vigorous Roar): 12 seconds AOE Radius: 375 units Cone Length: 500 units Cone Angle: 70°

Human Form: Balthasar strikes all around him by spinning his blade in a flurry of fire, dealing 50/90/130/170/210 (+60% AD) physical damage to all enemies hit. For each enemy hit, Blistering Cyclone's cooldown is reduced by 1 second (2 for enemy champions hit.)

Hound Form: Balthasar barks aggressively in a direction, fearing enemies facing towards him for 0.75 seconds, and decreasing the damage output of all enemies struck by 5%/10%/15%/20%/25% for 3.5 seconds.

#R: Man's Best Friend http://i.imgur.com/lVhgY3f.png Cost: No cost Cooldown: 120/100/80 seconds

Balthasar and his spiritual companion split off from eachother, becoming two separate beings for 20 seconds. The other form shares your health, armor, magic resist, movement speed, attack damage and attack speed. Reactivating this ability while active will cause you to switch main control between the two, gaining access to the abilities of that form. This effect has a 4 second cooldown.

The form you are not currently control can be controlled with ALT + MOUSE2 / ALT + R, and deals 60% less damage to all targets and takes 30% more damage from all sources.

If the Human Form or the Hound Form die during the effect, you become the surviving form, regardless of which form you are controlling upon the death of that form.

Interesting concept but...

  • I feel like the rather random nature of the change would be a major detriment to him kit wise.
  • Getting a little heavy handed with the references here aren't we? Obvious \m/etal references adide; "Once and Future King" is obviously ripped straight from Arthurian legend, it isn't even subtle when it is the name of the damn book. Try things that can have similar meanings or references to his lore. "Forsaken King" "Forgotten King" "Desecrated King" "Precursor to the Throne"

As for the lore, well... as a huge lore buff I can't abide it. Demacia is and always shall be a kingdom for the just and the pure. An area so black and white that it can be a utopian paradise to some, and a prison to others. Having that originate on a murder doesn't really make sense, neither would the complacency of the populace to this change.

Jarvin 1: "Yo bros your king, queen and heir all coincidentally died the same night and named me, some random scrub you don't know king"

Populace: "yeah cool man"

Really? You can take this anywhere, but by trying to put it into the main lore it just kind of forces a problem where there doesn't need to be one.

Ehhhhh...

I'm not sold on the core concept, unfortunately. Main issue here is that the kit is pretty much Gnar on steroids. With Gnar, part of the challenge and inherent balancing is that the cooldowns are shared, two of Gnar's abilities are passives in mini-Gnar, and he gains rage automatically such that it's impossible to avoid transforming. With Balthasar, you're directly able to control it as opposed to Gnar's passive gain. Even if the cooldowns were shared, it's still offering a means of control to get your extra 3 abilities, which means you now have 7 abilities.

But even then, both forms do the same thing - walk up to a guy and beat the tar out of him. There's not much diversity there. Elise, Nidalee, Jayce, and Gnar all switch from ranged to melee, with appropriate changes in abilities. You switch from melee to...melee? Why would you logically want to switch, then? Why even have that mechanic?

In theory, the ult is cool. In practice...you are now controlling two champions, with all the mechanical complexity therein. It's broken if masterfully executed, but most likely you're just going to get one of them killed without much fanfare, the flaming link being pretty boring and also a trap (you'll waste DPS if you try and set it up against a champion).

The ratios are also really, really wonky. Go look up other AD ratios and then clarify if you mean bonus or total AD. That would make Volcanic Battleground go from mostly unreasonable to "DUDE WHERE THE HELL IS MY HEALTH HE JUST ONE SHOT ME".

Overall, Balthasar isn't really treading any new ground here, which is kinda disappointing. The form change feels tacked on, and everything to do with it is disappointing. I'd personally recommend scrapping it altogether and doubling down on making the actual fighter feel unique and different.

I chose 20 seconds for the ult because Tibbers can last up to 45 seconds, but Balthasar's companion can do way more things than Tibbers so I cut it down a tad. I could be wrong with the choice of duration so let me know what you guys think.

As always, I am looking for ways to make improvements to my concept, and if you have a suggestion, comment, critique, feedback or concerns, please let me know!

Nerfed the R, Passive, E and W a tad each.

He now requires eight spell casts to transform.
