The Age of the Protectorates and the Magelords

Hi There! I don't know if anyone knows much about the Protectorates and the Magelords, but they were a race bent on war with each other before Demacia and Noxus were empires founded in Valoran. I was wondering if anyone knew much information about the two cultures (aside from what is in the League Wiki) because I am trying to get a base knowledge on these two races.

The Protectorate, whose symbol was the Stag, is found in the Summoner's Rift map and represents the Blue Side of the Rift. The Magelords, whose symbol is the Owl, is also found in the map to represent the Red Side of the Rift. There is definitely a potential to explain some history there, and I would love to see it!

There is also an etching or carving of aatrox on one of the walls in the new SR somewhere.

Is it confirmed that those 2 sides are the magelords and protectorate? Because I'm pretty sure that's just a theory

I've been digging up in the League Wiki for historical entries, and came across these two races. The most informative piece of information was the lore on Aatrox's history - where he was present at the major battle of the Protectorates vs the Magelords, on the side of the Protectorates. If there were any other major races jostling for control in Valoran at that day and age, then there is no written proof of it yet.

There are also icons on that website which depict the icon of the Stag representing Protectorates, and the icon of the Owl representing the Magelords. As I said though, this is all that I have found out - I'm just repeating information I've been looking into.

It is confirmed in the Summoner's Rift lore pretty sure, also confirmed that Aatrox helped a side fight in the rune wars. Kindred and Bard aren't mentioned because they weren't released when the Rune Wars first came up.

I wouldn't say "Realeased" is the right word. Bard is a celestial being and is out of the same time-length as we are. The only reason he came down to existence in contemporary age was because of the Battle at Bard Mountain. He may or may not have been around during the era of the Rune Wars, he may have passed over that time span completely.

Kindred themselves aren't noticed by people daily. They may wander through a battlefield completely unnoticed, taking the souls of those who willingly - and unwillingly - choose death. It would stand to reason that they could be operating in that day and age under the same circumstances.

I didn't mean that they didn't exist in League, I mean they weren't in the lore because Riot hadn't released them or thought of them yet IRL.

Check out Aatrox's lore to find out on his backstory in the war between the Protectorates and the Magelords.

And to say that because they weren't alive in lore is also incorrect. Tryndamere's lore speaks of a dark figure with a living weapon, inspiring bloodlust in those around them - ultimate killing Tryndamere's trible. Tryndamere was released as one of the first champions in League of Legends, and speaks of a character identical to Aatrox back even then. Riot planned ahead majorly in some cases, allowing for the lore to seem alive even in those champs who were the earliest creations in their works.

right now the lore related to the rune wars (and above events) is still a bit blurry.....we more or less got a glimpse of what happened thanks to Ryze 's rework. but still...we dont know how far in the past was that. he could be even older than Jax whom which his short story seem to indicate a far more older civilization than Shurima itself.

a timeline of Runeterra's history would be a good thing to have but i guess there's so much stuff remaining to be explained that we cant set the history of the world at least at a basic lvl.

we also have to take in account that Aatrox is a mythical figure as much as Kindred , Bard and TahmKench so those two factions could be even older than the Rune Wars themselves.

The rune wars are indeed a bit sketchy at best you're right. But on the topic of Jax, there have been multiple speculations that Jax is one of the remaining five Darkin Warriors alive, along with Aatrox. His combat prowess proves to be an equal match to the Protectorates while his mastery of magic in combat shows he considered great skill that the Magelords were said to have mastered. However, there is no proof that either race was immortal, otherwise there would be a race of immortal people in Valoran (Which there arent - for the most part). He may have some other connection which may explain his immortality, but for now it seems like being one of the last Darkin Warriors is a possibility.

All Darkin seem to be immortal, as shown in Aatrox's lore. Bard is a celestial, and is immortal until made mortal by his own decisions (like Soraka), Tahm may be immortal, it is hard to say. He may just live a long life, there is no recollection of a River King far back into ancient lore. As for Kindred, they are spiritual beings who form a modern day Grim Reaper mentality. It's hard to say whether they are innately immortal, require the hunt to sustain themselves, or if they form contracts with the rare few they hunt when their spiritual connection to the world can no longer be maintained and must find a replacement every few centuries (A far-fetched concept that last one - but it seems interesting all the same).

according to the short story that was added on the Universe page, Jax is Icathian.....it seems he was a byproduct of the fall of the Icathian civilization, so he has been honing his skills for like, thousands of years, he seems to be the last native Icathian in the world actually, and one of the few that knows what lurks on the other side of the void portals.

the story even tells why the mask, he's hiding his appearance, he has been void touched.
