Lost count of how many times ive lost a fight because my Biscuit Delivery cookies were on the wrong slot... (and before you say "put it there manualy before the fight", when you fight at 3:55 you get it mid-fight and it will be in slot 1 / whatever is free and not where i need them)
I've found that to be annoying too. Especially when using Kleptomancy since your champions inventory ends up piling in a lot of consumables.
My advice is the pre-populate slots you can't realistically reach in a short amount of time. To me this is putting any starter items or boots in slots 5 and 6 so I have slots 1-4 ready to be populated with items.
I also think you can determine where your prefer your items using the 'items list' feature by selecting one item, giving it a preference, and assign it to all champions. Of course that overrides a lot of the recommendations you may like to have but 'items list' is certainly a tool you could leverage to remedy the problem you're facing.
