Fan-Champion Creation Tips?

Hello there, this might be the wrong part of the forum to put this into, but I was wondering something. I love trying to create fan-made League champions, but I usually come to hate the end results whenever I make and post one. So I was wondering, are there any particular tips you guys can suggest that might help me make less clunky/crappy champions? Thank you in advance if you do ^^

EDIT: I thank everyone who has provided tips for this. I highly appreciate that you all have put forth the effort to help! ^^ I was honestly kind of worried that I was going to get a bunch of comments like "Here's a tip: Just don't" or something like that. Thank you all for being so kind to help ^^

don't try to make something that sounds cool, and don't tunnel super hard on a "unique mechanic". think about how the champion interacts with the rest of the champion pool, and above all think of whether the concept would even contribute to the game as a whole. if your champion is just a better version of someone that already exists, might as well just peg that as a rework suggestion.

also don't tunnel on numbers. focus on general kit cohesion, but try not to force players into particular skill sequences or combos. the best champions have meaningful choice in which skills to max first, and a great variance of situational combos. nidalee from 2011 was a really good example of this.

remember, creating a playable character is only 20% about what you want to make. it's 80% player experience, and what a player would want to play.

If you are going to make lore for the character, make sure that you through the Drinking Buddy test at least once.

Basically, you imagine taking another champion, and then theorize how many beers it would take for them to believe your character's lore. It's also kinda fun just to imagine taking someone and getting them sloshed so you can read them your fanfiction.
