[Champion Concept] Lephia, the Elemental Valkyrie

So here's an idea for a champion I've been working out for a while now. Take a look and leave some feedback :)

Lephia, the Student of Two Paths

Lore

Lephia had been around forged steel since birth, as she was born into a family of blacksmiths. Day after day, she watched her father tirelessly forge blades and shields, hammering away the impurities to create masterpieces. She became so intrigued by Ionian weaponry that she asked her father to teach her how to use them. Her father agreed, and crafted her the best weapons to suit her small stature, then enrolled her in a revered Ionian academy. When Lephia arrived, blade and shield in hand, the instructors had her take an aptitude test to determine what she would be best at. When the results indicated that she would be better suited to magic than swordplay, the instructors confiscated her weapons and gave her a staff instead. Lephia was reluctant, but agreed, as her father had spent lots of money to send her to the academy.

After months of learning magical spells and incantations, she grew weary of not having her trusty steel at her side and decided to sneak into the academy late at night to steal back her weapons. She felt relief as she strapped the shield to her arm and sheathed the sword at her side. As she savored that moment, one of the instructors walked in and caught her in the act. Infuriated, the instructor banished her from the academy. Lephia was devastated - not only had she been expelled from a top Ionian school, but she also had to go home to face her father's disappointment.

When Lephia returned home and delivered the news to her father, to Lephia's surprise, he was not angry at all. Instead, he commended her on her dedication to the ways of blade-to-blade combat. He said that she had great potential, having studied at a top magic academy, and that she should apply the things she learned there to her own style. Recognizing her potential, he recommended the League of Legends as a place to go where she can watch others and learn, and maybe one day take part in the combat herself. And so, Lephia set out to find the League of Legends, where she could perfect and test her combination of blade and magic, hoping to prove her worth to her father as well as the academy that cast her away.

Abilities

Passive - Elemental Mastery: After casting a basic spell, Lephia's Basic attacks gain bonus effects based on which spell was last used: Q - Each basic attack burns the target for 7/14/21 (+5% AP) over 3 seconds. W - Each basic attack applies a stack of Frost (Max: 5). Frost slows the target by 2%/4%/6%. E - Each basic attack drains 2/4/6 (+2.5% AP) mana from the target champion.

After changing to Shield Stance, Lephia will block the next basic attack. After changing to Sword Stance, Lephia's next basic attack will critically strike, dealing 50% bonus damage.

Q - Flare Edge (Sword Stance): Lephia ignites her blade and slashes all enemies in a narrow cone in front of her, dealing 40/55/70/95/110 (+40% AP) magic damage. This also applies the passive bonus from Elemental Mastery. (Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6) [Mana cost: 60/67/74/81/90]

Q - Flame Veil (Shied Stance): Lephia conjures flames around her that last 4 seconds and deal 5/10/15/20/25 (+4% AP) magic damage per second to all nearby units. (Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6) [Mana cost: 40/45/50/55/60]

W - Entrapping Ice (Sword Stance): Lephia freezes the ground around her, rooting all targets within a radius for 1 second. (Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10) [Mana cost: 50/55/60/65/70]

W - Ice Barrage (Shield Stance): Lephia dashes in a target direction. Any units she collides with are taken with her for the remaining length of the dash and are dealt 20/30/40/50/60 (+10% Current health) physical damage. For each enemy champion struck, she gains 2% increased resistances for 5 seconds. (Cooldown: 20/19/18/17/16) [Mana cost: 40/45/50/55/60]

E - Call Lightning (Sword Stance): Lephia sends lightning from her sword into the sky. After a 2 second delay, the lightning strikes a target location, dealing 45/55/65/75/85 (85% AP) to all enemies within radius of the target location. (Cooldown: 12/11/10/9/8) [Mana cost: 45/55/65/75/85]

E - Shocking Impact (Shield Stance): Lephia leaps up into the air briefly before landing and slamming her shield into the ground, emitting electricity that silences all enemies in a small radius for 1.25 seconds and dealing 50/55/60/65/70 (+70% AP) damage. (Cooldown: 11/10/9/8/7) [Mana cost: 55/65/75/85/95]

R - Stance Change: Lephia switches stances, granting her a different set of abilites and passive bonuses depending on which stance she is in. (Cooldown: 4/3/2) Sword Stance: +5%/10%/15% Attack speed, +5%/7.5%/10% Movement Speed, 200 Basic Attack Range Shield Stance: +5/10/15 Armor, +5/10/15 Magic Resist, 125 Basic Attack Range

Inspiration

I've always liked sword-and-shield characters - being able to balance defense and offense effectively and flexibly is something i value in combat. I also really like spellcaster-type characters, especially those that use a melee weapon as a focus object, so i decided to combine the two. I also like form change champions, which perfectly fits the theme of sword-and-shield combat. Lephia has a decent mix of offense (in the form of damage-over time and AoE), defense (in the form of passive stat buffs and blocking), and utility (in the form of crowd control), which is exactly what I'd expect from the ideal sword-and-shield user.

Let me know what you think below! I shoudn't have to say this, but please be nice - I put a lot of thought into this. :)

Edit log:

EDIT 1: Added a cooldown for E- Shocking Impact as well as mana costs for all abilities. EDIT 2: Changed name from "Lephia, the Elemental Valkyrie" to "Lephia, the Student of Two Paths" EDIT 3: Added lore! EDIT 4: Changed scalings to be properly represented in percentages. EDIT 5: Changed the root duration on W - Entrapping Ice (Sword Stance) from 0.75 seconds to 1 second. EDIT 6: Changed the AP ratio on E - Call Lightning (Sword Stance) from 0.8 to 0.85 EDIT 7: Removed all of R - Stance Change's negative effects.

Cool idea! A few people have already brought this up, but the sobriquet for your champion doesn't feel right. Nothing about your character screams 'Valkyrie', so I'd suggest coming up with something different. Maybe Elemental Vanguard. I typically go through each ability on a champion and give my thoughts on it, but atm I'm extremely tired, so this is gonna be short.

-The passive seems really cool in theory, but in practice this would be a nightmare to balance. It feels like it'd either be negligible or completely broken; right now it's leaning towards the negligible side. In order to justify making the enhanced autos feel worthwhile, there'd have to be a gating mechanism of some kind.

  • Need some ranges listed on these abilities, both forms of Q and Sword E jump out in particular of needing specific ranges.
  • Speaking of E, the shield version looks like Jayce's Hammer Q with a silence added to it. Maybe have this be a skillshot involving tossing the shield instead?
  • You should not be punished for switching stances, ditch the negative stat effects and just keep the differing bonuses.
  • On Shield Stance W, is the ratio on that your own current health or your targets'?

I really like the concept, just needs some cleaning up. Good work, keep at it!

I don't like this because the name and abilities seem to lack a theme. "Cat Guy - Tree of Justice."

Elemental Valkyrie doesn't go together in the same way. We should be shooting for champs like Tahm, Jhin, Bard etc

Tired of the 12 yr old champion concept.. (meaning here's the craziest shit I could think up)

In my champion concepts, I always like to have a version without numbers/damage and have them replaced like: deals 200/700/1200(+300% AP) magic damage --> deals magic damage although you should keep durations of stuff in there and replace slow values with weak/fair/strong slows.

This is just something I do for easy readability.

I love champions that use elements, but most of the time I think of mages not valkyries This reminds me of Kayle And also Sona Udyr it inspires me to make my own champion concept.

So she is a melee AP who uses modified auto attacks? Cool. Love how she always has an attack modifier and makes you have to choose between them situationally

Have her Q apply on hit effects, useful for a number of reasons and offers easier clarity.

Third comment, I know, but they were all separate thoughts and... I'll get on with it.

She feels very much like Robin from the fire emblem games/super smash bros 4 was this intentional/ on purpose?

So Leona and Jayce are having a child. [slayer-jinx-catface]

Sweet champ idea! Would be great in top/support! However, Elemental Valkyrie. I believe this has already been addressed.

Could you check out my champion idea? Its an AP utility-based mage with silences, and I need critique to make him better! Nefalz, The Herald of Silence

Its pretty good like the name.

notes she would have a very diverse building path she can be played a offensive ap bruiser wwith damages, or a support that has good ap defenses.

i dont see anything wrong here as shes solid with glaring weaknesses like she can only be in one stance at a time. very low base damages like they are pretty pitiful.

but she does have some very powerful good things. diverse buildpath high ap ratios. pretty good stats over all.

a very well designed champ.[slayer-jinx-wink]

Hooollllly yes. Would her cool downs between Sword and Shield stances be shared? Both on Q are similar length and E- Shocking Impact doesn't have one listed. If it's a typo, then that's fine. Just curious.

Amazing concept! I feel like the name is a great now and I like the lore.

However, I feel like she's a bit underpowered.

For example, her Sword Stance E

E - Call Lightning (Sword Stance): Lephia sends lightning from her sword into the sky. After a 2.5 second delay, the lightning strikes a target location, dealing 45/55/65/75/85 (0.8% AP) to all enemies within radius of the target location. (Cooldown: 12/11/10/9/8) [Mana cost: 45/55/65/75/85]

a 2.5 second delay is wayyy too long. 2.5 seconds in game is a long time, and most delayed spells have a 1 second maximum delay.

I feel like all of her base damages are a bit too low, and your ap scaling kind of confused me. It's usually written as (80% AP), not (0.8% AP).

I also feel like her root should be a bit longer.
