Champion Concept: Alto the High Flyer (Revised)

Alto is a concept i have been working on and off on for a while now. I've been sitting on just the kit for a while now and decided to finally write up some background and generally flesh the character's story out a bit. I plan to add in a few extras such as a short overview of his game play and champions he performs best with/worst against etc

Anyways, as he stands now i feel he is a fairly interesting and unique champion but of course that's up to you to decide ;). Anyway's let me know what you think in the comments below!

Couldn't really find anything other then this image that was similar to this concept though it is fairly close. The main difference is that Alto's appearance and equipment are closer to modern day then futuristic.

#**Background **

Alto is a young man with his own sense of justice. As a child he wished to one day protect the citizens of Piltover believing the best way to do so would be to join the newly created police force. Shortly after achieving his dream, he witnessed the death of a young girl at the hands of a well-known criminal. Outraged he gave chase eventually catching and killing the man. Whilst considered a hero by the people for his actions, Alto was discharged from the police force and exiled from Piltover for murdering a man in cold blood. He has since traveled the world as a bounty hunter protecting those in need and bringing his own form of justice to those he hunts.

#Gameplay

##Jungling Alto is a highly mobile fighter who excels skirmishes and creating opportunities with well-timed flanks. Alto's ability to clear the jungle depends quite heavily on proper usage and placement of his drones. Alto can either utilize them in a similar manner to Elise's spiderlings splitting aggro between himself and his drones or amply place them behind to guarantee maximum damage output at the cost of a bit more health. When ganking, Alto performs best when he is able to flank the opponent, throwing down his wire to cut off their escape and taking them down when they have nowhere left to go. Alto has some interesting choices to make wit his passive. Early game it is generally better to farm to complete your quests but in the mid-game, accepting champion and Objective based quests can speed up the upgrade process immensely however they have an inherent risk associated with them in that if you are unable to pick up some kills/objectives you are unlikely to upgrade your abilities as quickly as you could of by farming the jungle. Choose wisely.

#Team fights Just like when ganking, Alto performs at his best when he can flank his targets especially in the jungle corridors, cutting off their escape and pushing them into his own team with good use of Sonic Boom. Alto is one of the best at dictating where a fight should go between his ultimate and wires. Well placed wires can cut-off the escape route of a fleeing enemy whilst well co-ordinated use when attaching to a teammate can create a mobile stun zone the enemy is forced to avoid. Whilst the enemy is forced between choosing fight or flight, Alto can cause havoc on a clumped up team dealing tons of damage through a combination of "A man's best friend' and 'Float like a butterfly'. #Short story

##Part 1

Do we have a deal?

Alto looked around the room with obvious boredom as the mayor weighed up his options.

The man sighed before finally replying: "Fine but you're not getting a single coin if you can't rescue the hostages as well."

Alto smiled at his words. "A simple enough proposition. The bandits will be removed and the women free by tonight."

"Hmph they'd better be for the price you're asking. Just please make sure no harm comes to those girls, they never deserved to be a part of something like this."

"You have my word Mayor Delkin"

There had been a rumor floating around for a few weeks now that a group of bandits had taken over a nearby town and had taken women hostage to force the locals into doing what they wanted. Of course this would be a very difficult time for the locals but this sort of situation was any bounty hunters dream.

Alto grinned to himself as he walked out of the mayor's office.

"It's not often I get a chance to earn this much from one job. Now the formalities are over, i might as well make the most of it!"

The mayor did say the bandits had taken over the local pub as their base of operations. Of course this was the most obvious place for them to take over after the mayor's office. Their raucous laughter could be heard from the other side of town. They were probably busy drinking away the afternoon whilst they waited for the locals to bring them dinner.

Strangely there was no-one guarding the building. Maybe they had grown lax from their extended time here. Pulling himself up to the window, Alto took a quick look inside.

Inside were nine men most huddled around a game of cards whilst the others were passed out on the floor. The young girls the mayor had mentioned were going back and forth serving drinks to the men as they played.

"Well this should be fun"

##Part 2

Girl, my glass is empty. Fetch me some rum already!

"Yes sir right away"

Chelsea fought back the tears as she walked over to the bar to refill the bandit captains glass. She had been stuck in here with her younger sister for weeks because of these foul men and yet still no-one had tried to save them. After this long, she began to doubt if anyone ever would. The townspeople were simply following every request the bandits had made hoping if they continued to do so the girls would be set free but from what she had overheard the captain didn't plan on giving them up anytime soon.

Reaching up to grab a bottle from the shelf, something caught the corner of her eye. There was someone peering into the room from an upper window. Realizing he had been spotted the young man began signalling for her to hide behind the bar. A little confused, Chelsea nodded in confirmation quickly grabbing her sister as she came over with a tray and ducked behind the counter just as the man jumped through the window.

The bandits were stunned for a second at the sight before they began searching for weapons but it was already too late. Small turrets floated behind the man mowing down the bandits as he propelled towards them sword in hand.

Pulling her sister to her chest, Chelsea cowered behind the counter praying that they would survive this ordeal.

"It's OK you can come out now" Surprised at these words, Chelsea raised her head over the counter to see the young man sitting on a stool on the opposite side of the bar smiling at her.

"See your safe now, all the bad guys are dealt with."

Chelsea looked around the room unable to believe what was in front of her.

You ... Wha .. How...

The young man glanced around and sighed. "Yeh I expected them to put up a fight at least. It's no fun when it's this easy."

Turning back to her with a big grin on his face he asked her if she was alright.

Unable to wrap her head around the situation , Chelsea just nodded as the young man breathed a sigh of relief.

"The mayor contracted me to take out these guys and save you two. Luckily nothing went wrong.

As he talked, the townspeople began gathering around the pub glancing in through the windows to try and see what happened. There was a big cry as Chelsea's mother ran through the door thanking the young man profusely before embracing the two girls and promising to never let them go.

Smiling at the scene, Alto walked over to the Mayor who was standing at the door to discuss his payment.

"The bandits have been dealt with and the girls rescued unharmed as promised."

The mayor breathed a sigh of relief. "I can't thank you enough young man, please won't you stay the night. We will have a big celebration now that our town is free of these bastards".

Alto pondered this for a moment before replying, "I will have to respectfully decline. I'm no hero, just a mercenary who works for the highest bidder."

Well you're a hero to me!

Alto turned around to see the oldest of the two girls standing behind him.

If it wasn't for you, I would still be stuck in there. Thank-you for saving us mister.

Alto couldn't help but smile at her honesty. "Well that's good to hear, just make sure you never make it onto my list" he replied winking as walked away

A bounty board is posted at the base. Alto can interact with the board to receive contracts (Max 3 at a time). After unlocking a new tier, Alto can upgrade 1 basic ability. At Tier 5 Alto can upgrade his ultimate.

Spawns a drone at a target location. Drones follow Alto but always remain at a fixed distance. Drones attack the closest target to them or whoever Alto is attacking if they are range.

Drones fire a shot every 0.25 seconds dealing 8/11/14/17/20 (+0.05 AD) physical damage per shot. Drones remain in combat until they are destroyed or run out of ammo. Drones regenerate 4 ammo per second whilst out of combat.

#Champion Synergy

##Performs well with Gnar Gnar Gnar is the perfect partner for Alto. Whilst in Mega, Gnar can push an entire team into a flanking Alto's wires and can act as the perfect dive buddy in team fights stacking CC and allowing Alto to shred through his targets. Even in mini Gnar is a big help, slowing down targets with boomerangs and having the mobility to stick with Alto thanks to Hyper and Hop.

Taliyah** Taliyah**

Taliyah is a fantastic partner for Alto due to her excellent zone control. Between them, Taliyah and Alto can make escape practically impossible for the enemy team and can assist each other in pushing targets into their respective kill-zones with well placed knock-backs.

TahmKench Tahm Kench Tahm is a great champion at supporting Alto's playstyle. With Tahm's help, Alto finds it much easier to flank the enemy and access their backline and with the added protection can feel safe knowing that Tahm can bring him to safety if things go awry.

##Struggles against

Ezreal Ezreal Alto struggles to stick to the prodigal explorer wo can kite him with ease whilst also being able to avoid his wires and ultimate with a well-timed arcane shift. On top of this, Ezreal can take out Alto's drone from safety with relative ease with Mystic shot lowering Alto's damage output and movement speed significantly.

Lissandra Lissandra Lissandra's combination of AoE makes Alto's job much more difficult. He struggles to stick to her with her constant slows and she can easily avoid his CC with Glacial Path. Her AoE abilities allow her to deal with both Alto and his drones at once whlst her ultimate keeps him in one place long enough to allow her team to take gim ot before he has an impact.

Leblanc** Leblanc** Simply put Alto has lot of trouble even touching Leblanc. Leblanc's extreme mobility is a nightmare for Alto who struggles to keep up with her constant movement. To make matters worse, once Alto finally reaches her, he is likely to be hit by Etheral Chains and be left dead in the water.

I sincerely hope you become a champion designer for riot, and that this champion gets launched on league of legends (btw im main jungle and i loved that concept and kit, if it airs it will be the most balanced) The lore was exeptional and so the voicelines. #RIOT NOTICE THIS SENPAI!#

I'll upvote you but that passive is unbelievably clunky. I would make it more simple - the idea is neat, but I don't see a character like this ever being utilized really in the meta with that passive, at all. Too variable. Maybe have each tier just have a specific 2-3 actions you need to take, instead of having the bounty board/rng element?

Yo man, Some very interesting concepts!. I love the effort you have put into it. Im giving some feedback after reading all of it!

First of all, i felt that his kit did not have synergy with his background. From my perspective, Alto seems like a more futuristic Police Officer from his flying drones. His W, E and R feel as though they dont quite match him as a CHARACTER.

Second: I feel as though he has way to much mobility and utility for one champion alone. He is very overloaded (maybe im reading the info wrong idk)

Third: I believe (personal opinion) that if you are to create a champion, you need to think of a kit first, then what they look like, then end with lore and speech. I think you spent more than enough time on dialog.

Fourth: From other peoples standpoint, a lot of people dont like the idea of mini-games anymore. But i feel as though this gives more thought to gameplay of him and how you move around the jungle and keeps from a stagnant gameplay and paths. I believe that some of the contracts could be very fun but others could be tedious and boring. Try to add some more depth to some for the Tier 3 contracts.

Fifth: I believe that he has way too much AD scaling. His W should have AP scaling instead to keep from a Riven type gameplay. I believe it will somewhat balance him out a bit and offer some different build paths.

I will go into more depth in my opinions about the Q, W, E and R

Q: I believe that this is a cool idea. This has to be his main ability. But i believe this could be abused in a laning phase and too easy to clear with or not able to clear at all. The health of the drones may be too low or too high. I dont think the mana per shot is needed tbh. I think a simple 50/55/60/65/70 mana is more suitable. Also, i believe that the AD scaling health is a little too much. But if youre going to have that, add something like 5% of YOUR maximum health plus (+0.2 AD) (+35% crit damage). This gives more build paths as well. Also, i believe that these little guys shoot a little too slow for what they are doing. Have them start with a .40 attack speed and increase by (25%) of your own attack speed with a (.05% per level) . I believe the upgrade is good and damage is good as well.

W: I believe this doesnt go well with his kit. I think you should use something thats of a stun-gun sort. What you could do is: Alto quick drawns his stun-gun and tazes the enemy. The enemy is slowed for (25% (additional 7% per level). If another enemy is close to the tazed target (minion, champion, or neutral monster), both of them will be stunned for 1 second and burn effect (4/10/16/22/30 +0.35 AP) over 3 seconds. 13/11.5/10/8.5/7 second CD. I believe the stun-gun gives a lot more of a police feel to it while still keeping his intent to hunt the target giving both him and the enemy the chance to work around it. This ability is a Point and click.

E: Pretty cool concept but a bit confusing. I think that instead of his boots, he should be given a jet-pack(ish) type thing that does the same thing. I think the boots are kinda weird for his kit and background because his lore doesnt quite graps that idea. Maybe say something like this in the lore: "As Alto was hunting down his next bounty in Zaun, he stumbles across Victor's Laboratory and finds a back-pack. He tries it on. Confused on how it works, he saw a glove that goes with it and puts it on. He realized there was a button on the glove and presses it eagerly. Alto then launches into the air rapidly and bangs his head on the ceiling. He heard Victor coming his way, so he ran out with and launched out of the lab onto the roof with his new found gadget. He hears Victor questioning what happened and then leaves, not noticing his just completed gadget was missing", I think will add a bit more depth to his kit.

R: I believe that this ability has way too much CC. Plus i feel as though it wont work with the system of league. It has way too much that can be done with it and could completely displace an entire team. My opinion is of the following: I believe you should keep the idea of traveling very fast but add a few things and get rid of the majour CC. You could do something like; Alto takes .75 seconds to charge his backpack (at this time, Alto takes 70% reduced total damage (even true damage)) and charges at a given location (1800 units range). At the end of the cast Alto creates a large explosion dealing 150/250/350 (+0.5 AD) to all enemies in the area and knocks up the first champion hit. During his ult Alto, cannot be interupted. At the end of the ult, Alto, is given max drones, empowering all drones to deal 20/35/50 (+0.3 AD) damage for 5 seconds with .75 attack speed. After the 5 seconds, the drones still stay. I think something of this concept will implement more use of the drones and still keep that depth in his kit.

Build path: I agree that he should be a Jungler/Bruiser. He has a lot of roam potential and has a very strong kit for ganking. But he is also a fighter in the long run but also more tanky but could go more fighter. So i have 3 build paths for him.

Overall, i did add a few of my own ideas into the concept that i believe could make him fairly balanced and not so overloaded. But you have a really fun concept and i would love to play this champion. His abilites give him different build paths based on if you want to have tankier drones, or drones that attack fast with crit. It is all up to the player and how they see fit. He could be a versatile champion with a lot of capabilities. Really good job with the design man! Hope you can implement my ideas into your concept!

This is really awesome work. Your attention to detail is remarkable.

2 suggestions (strictly my opinion, just throwing these out there):

  • Maybe make the W work with his drones instead of other players. (Or both?) ((The wall idea is pretty amazing but might be a bit overpowered if he's meant to be a jungler, since terrain is stationary.))

  • Make the passive into two parts: -- Along with upgrading each ability, maybe add a drone-only buff with each tier too. (Maybe # of drones?) -- Less quests. I think 2-3 for each tier would be cool.

Props on the E ability. Everything about it seems perfect.

Hopefully RIOT notices this :X

Well...at least this time the pic is just not in the thumbnail but also in the post. Good job on the detailing for this champion. I'm pretty sure Riot could at the very least borrow something from here. It's outstandingly well done.

Passive feels really clunky and complicated. I love the Q and W however E is a tad weird tho. Ult is freaking awesome!

also i rarely if ever post on the forums so if someone could let me know how i can enlarge the text so i can make things like "Recommended items" and "Alto's kit" stand out more easily that would be great!

Innate: It's easily one of the most thought-out innate abilities I've ever seen on a champ concept, but the biggest issue with an innate ability like this is that balancing the challenge vs reward is never easy. For instance, Riot's expressed concern with Rengar's own bounty mechanic, as it rewards him for doing what he's already going to be doing (killing champions) and just gives him a lot of bonus power when the kill gold he's accumulating is already a reward in and of itself. In Alto's case, I can't help but feel concern that basically all of his bounties are just general jungler duties anyways, and since they're randomized the enemy can't know for sure which actions are going to be necessary to stop him stacking his passive up (compared to Kindred, whose marked targets are always made known to the enemy). In the long run, his passive just rewards him for doing his job properly, when that already rewards itself by giving him gold and experience. It's a pretty neat and creative passive though, i'll give you that, and you put a lot of thought into the various quests he might receive.

Q: At the end of day, these are mobile Heimer turrets. I actually take issue with the 4 shots per second followed by a second's break, as it gives Alto a LOT of sudden damage that some players might not account for ahead of time. It also makes him INCREDIBLY difficult to invade, as he can keep his entourage of turrets cruising with him and if an enemy tries to give him grief he can just run away and let the turrets do the work.

W: The duration doesn't scale up to anything particularly special so this is a definite one-point wonder, but this is a VERY point aoe linear stun that passes through enemy minions. It's somewhat mitigated in that it needs to latch onto terrain or an allied champion, but 800 range is pretty long, and this would give Alto some very fierce ganking potential, especially to bot and top lane. It also makes him really good at fighting in jungle corridors, conveniently enough.

E: The passive is very potent, but it's only really as good as Alto already is in a fight. If he's losing it doesn't help, if he's winning he wins harder. For such a short-range dash, this ability is VERY unspammable, but I suppose that's a fair trade give this also gives him 115% AD scaling on his basics.

R: Although it fits thematically, I really don't like the fact that this is a blink, as - especially once upgraded - the enemy doesn't really have any way to react short of just never presenting a target to him in the first place. Even Malphite's ultimate gives you time for a panic flash out of the way. One major issue I have is that this ability kinda breaks his general gameplay philosophy. Up to now he's struck me as a skirmisher similar who's meant to flank into the enemy team from the side and throw his tether to an ally, but this is squarely a vanguard's ultimate, it's a similar problem I have with Hecarim but it's more excusable for him in that his playstyle is all about aggressive charging. It's also incredibly powerful with combined with other wombo ultimates, such as Miss Fortune or Leona's, but since it doesn't really support Alto's playstyle directly (he's gonna ult in, pull enemies toward him, and then get blown up because he's not inherently tanky and needs to build AD to do any damage) that's the ONLY situation where it's really a good idea to go in hard.

Another problem I have is that his kit doesn't feel like it suits being a skirmisher like you say you mean it to. When you think of the famous skirmishers, Yasuo, Master Yi, Fiora, and Riven, what do they all have in common? Hypermobility, a way to cheat enemy defenses as long as they build damage, and a defensive trick or two to help them survive when they go in deep. Alto has none of the above. He has SOME mobility in his E, but the dash is short and the ability has a long cooldown, and in his Q, but that relies on his drones being active.

I like his passive, W, and E, but I would suggest thinking of a completely fresh Q and changing directions somewhat on his ultimate. Still, you've definitely a lot of work into this bad boy and you should feel proud of how it is so far!

Drones fire a shot every 0.25 seconds dealing 8/11/14/17/20 (+0.05 AD) physical damage per shot. Drones remain in combat until they are destroyed or run out of ammo. Drones **regenerate 4 ammo per second **whilst out of combat.

it is a really interesting and well thought out kit i feel. unique. But could you just elaborate on this? If the drones fires at .25 per second, and the reload time is 4 ammo per second, will that not just cancel out, making it void and unnecessary.

+1 if only cuz his name is Alto. That's the name of one of my former "alto" egos. Actually, the full alter ego was Alto Eagle.

Wow this is actually a really fleshed out champion concept. I like his kit especially. It doesn't really sound too OP and it looks fun to play. Hopefully Riot sees this and is inspired by it.
