Umbra, The Grim Puppeteer


Passive: Pulling Strings Passing the strings between Umbra and Oskom over a champion marks them for 1.5 seconds(10-5sec cooldown per champion). Abilities on marked targets deal 10% additional damage as true damage and stun for the remaining duration. Marked enemies are revealed(like Oracle Lens).


Q: Death Warrant | CD 11.5/11/10.5/10/9.5/9s | Cost 50/55/60/65/70/75 | Radius 200 Oskom quickly attacks all enemies around him dealing 70/80/90/110/120/130+(60% Attack Damage + 40% Ability Power) bonus physical damage + 7.5/8/8.5/9/9.5/10% of targets missing life.

W: Tangled Threads | CD 14/13/12/11/10/9s | Cost 60/70/80/90/100/110 | Range 850 After 0.3 seconds Umbra shoots out strings that pass through units and disarm(blind) enemies for 1.25/1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 seconds and Deal 40/70/100/130/160/190+(130% bonus Attack Damage) physical damage.

E: Dark Arrival | CD 19/18/17/16/15/14s | Cost 75/80/85/90/95/100 | Radius 250 Oskom teleports to a location and deals 40/80/120/160/200/240+(100% Ability Power) magic damage to enemies around him, while Umbra and nearby allies gain a shield equal to 40/50/60/70/80/90/100+(30% AP + 40% Bonus AD). (Teleports anywhere he can move within range of Umbra.)

R:Puppet Master Passive: Gaurdian Umbra controls a puppet called Oskom. Umbra cannot basic attack but instead uses Oskom to attack for her. Oskom can be moved by Alt-clicking pressing R or giving an attack order, he moves at a speed of 425+(100% movement speed bonus), can move through units but paths around champions, has an attack range of 150, and a maximum distance from umbra of 375(+10 per level. 545 at 18). Oskom either stays in the same relative position to Umbra until given an order, or stays in the exact same location until ordered(toggled on/off with a chain icon in the same area as champion icons for Kindred passive). Active: Last Strand Holding for 0.5 seconds makes Umbra begin tightening the strings, holding for an additional 0.5 seconds makes her pull forward and dash to Oskom's location. Upon arrival she gains 30% damage reduction for 2 seconds.(60-40 sec cooldown)

Rather long story, but should be enjoyable and explain a lot about her.


Why does she work? How does this mechanic work?

  1. Marked enemies are revealed like Oracle Lens to allow abilities to hit stealthed enemies while not allowing auto attacks.
  2. AP ratios, while she is intended for ADC, allow for her to go midlane as a possible AP or Hybrid build. Think Ezreal or Lucian.
  3. Oskom gets dragged or even pulled through walls if he exceeds the max distance, for Flash and other reasons.
  4. Champions can walk through Oskom to avoid toxic path blocking against melee matchups, and Oskom paths around champions to stop a potentially overpowered passive.
  5. Strings are moved AFTER E deals damage, so no instant teleport stun.
  6. No click-to-win chases-you-back-to-fountain abilities, all require skill or thought to succeed.
  7. If an assassin comes from behind and your teleport isn't up with Q to stun them, then you're probably toast.
  8. Try combing E with R active for wall jumps in a tight situation.
  9. Passing strings over champions, especially multiple ones, can take time and leave you vulnerable.
  10. Runaans is unavailable, but she can get melee only items.
  11. Moving Oskom from one side to the other takes time when E is on cooldown, as opposed to normal adc attacks.
  12. Hard CC stops Oskom from moving as well.
  13. Effects like Morde ghost and Neeko passive use Umbra as the model with a unique auto attack animation, like whipping with a string.
  14. Using Oskom to attack and cast Q is hardly any more complex than using Morde ghost and W, so she may be difficult to control but definitely not as hard as most people think. Personally I think she'd be easier for me than LeBlanc...
  15. While walking she does stop briefly, every time Oskom attacks or uses an ability, to control him.

Wanted to go for a new game-play mechanic, and I think having a more 2-in-1 champ is a cool idea. Intended for ADC role.

Great idea, sounds fresh and interesting, only problem would be the ult imo, sounds a bit too OP, maybe start with a 1 second protection rank 1, 2 second rank 2 then 3 second on rank 3?

Pretty cool move to combine the attractive woman with a "scary" thing - it's usually one or the other, and there seems to be a lot of "cute" nowadays. Problems: I get the feeling that skins for this champ would be quite a lot of work with two models to do, and skeletal images are taboo in China (the reason Karthus is a zombie instead of a skeleton now). However, the attractive woman component could be enough to offset the ugly part and get some attention as far as skins, balance, etc.

Sounds like her Q is a bit like Camille's E, and W like a skillshot version of Teemo's Q. However, I see that 1.0 AP ratio on E and I worry. It's obvious that this is meant to be an AD champ, but weird off-builds tend to produce unforeseen problems when combined with other champs and mechanics (including ones that are introduced afterward).

The ult is cool and thematic, but way too strong in terms of sheer mechanics. Kayle's ult makes her invincible, but you can still CC her. Tryn's ult prevents him from dying, but you can still CC him. Vlad's pool makes him unable to be targeted for CC or additional damage, but I'm pretty sure all he can do in pool is E (no Q, autos, etc.). Becoming untargetable while being able to attack and cast spells while only being hindered by a slow means that people would build The Fast (or get a teammate with a movespeed boost, like Zilean) and burst the enemy team with no counterplay. That would need a rework. Since it's awesome, people would want that part to stick around even though it's the problem, and that would make progress very difficult indeed.

So here's my only critique: I'd have the puppets movement tied to a Q,W, or E and make it the only level 1 ability available, same type of thing with Azir soldiers. That way existing mechanics like tibbers or Morde's ghost could be used. Then move one of your designed abilities into the Passive slot, allowing it some proc conditions you believe balanced. This would help limit the mechanical difficulty a bit, which even with this design would be incredibbly intense.

I love pretty much everything else. The idea of controlling a melee puppet at a relatively close range seems like so much fun, and i love the thematic story behind him too. I think starting the range closer then letting it scale with levels is also supper clever! I think that the disarm you include is supper cool too! You could also add a tiny, tiny pull that draws the hit champion slightly closer to the puppet, thematically very interesting.

Gosh, now im stuck here macking minor tweaks because how much i love your idea! Something that could be fun would be to have the ability that lets you control the puppet only have one rank available, then three other abilities with six potential ranks, though would be kinda boring not having a strong ultimate like yours with such a thematically amazing champion! So cool!

Would you mind if i post an simplified example of the tweaks in the comments? I'd hate to do that without permission though, since it might come across like im not simply blown away at what you made!

I wont say anything about "balance stuff" like damage, cds etc. since none of us is going to ever do the maths to consider if they are low or high.

Its a very interesting idea tbh but the problem, i think, is that she will be extremely difficult to play . If you ever play any champion who uses "summons", like Annie or Morde, you can see that it can be, in many cases, very demanding to navigate both your champion and your "puppet" in a team fight. Imo it would be extremely difficult to navigate a team fight with your character, a puppet and all the skills that can come from either the puppeteer or the puppet.

Although is a very interesting and nice idea, i think it has this particular gameplay problem.

Alternatively, I could have her ult last 5/6/7 seconds, and make Oskom have a 40-60%(based on level) health bar, that deals 15% of her max life as true damage whenever depleted and downs him for 3 seconds, recharging after 5 seconds out of combat at 10% per second (15 second total refresh) or instantly after 3 second downtime. Making him targetable. Making it more risky.

Gmmmmm i see very interesting and i totally agree with you all these new champs are geared towards kids these says example neeko, Zoe, etc. I read all the comments and updates and think that this would be a great addition to leauge, I have also played mobile legends basically league on mobile and its control scheme would be more adjusted for this kind of champion ( joysticks 1 for movement 1 for ability casts ). But am going off topic. Good job very nice concept everything else has been said
