[Rework Concept] Varus, the Arrow of Retribution

As Champions are consistently being reworked, changed, and created, a majority of the older ones, the ones few people play, are becoming obsolete and unwanted (cough, cough, Urgot, Yorick). But, in my opinion, those two I just mention don't have any redeeming concepts or qualities behind them, and many un-played Champions do have some interesting mechanics in their kits. As such, I looked at some Champions I thought had some potential and went and "modernized" them to help them fit into the current meta. So, here's the first of the Champions I reworked; Varus. Also note that I am really bad with numbers, so I just kept the damages, ranges, etc of current Varus.

Passive, Blighted Quiver:

Varus’ basic attacks deal bonus magic damage. They also apply Blight for 6 seconds, up to 3 times. Varus’ other spells detonate Blight, dealing magic damage equal to a percentage of the target’s maximum health.

Q, Piercing Arrow:

FIRST CAST: Varus begins channeling his next shot, gradually increasing the range and damage of Piercing Arrow over the next 2 seconds. Varus can still move while channeling, but can't autoattack or use his other abilities (besides Sundering Vengeance), and his movement speed is slowed by 20%. After 4 seconds, **Piercing Arrow **is automatically cancelled, going on half cooldown and refunding half of its mana cost. Sundering Vengeance can be cast during Piercing Arrow’s charge-up. SECOND CAST: Varus fires, dealing physical damage to all enemies in the arrow's path, reduced by 15% per enemy hit (down to a minimum of 40%).

Blight Arrow Bonus- If Blight Arrow is used to augment this spell, Varus loads two additional arrows onto the Piercing Arrow attack. After the first arrow is fired, Varus has 4 seconds to fire two more arrows for no cost. The bonus arrows have the same range and speed as the main arrow, but deal half as much damage. (Basically, he gets to fire the spell two more times for reduced damage).

W, Sundering Vengeance:

PASSIVE: Varus gains an attack speed buff for 2 seconds based on the number of Blight stacks consumed by his spells. Varus also passively generates stacks of Blight Arrow every so often, up to a cap of 2. ACTIVE: Varus loads a specially crafted Blight Arrow into his bow, which influences his next basic attack or ability within 5 secs. Varus only can have 1 Blight Arrow in queue at one time.

Basic Attack Bonus Effect- A basic attack that uses a Blight Arrow deals bonus physical and magic damage and afflicts the target with Retribution for 5 seconds. Varus’ basic attacks against marked enemies receive double damage from his passive’s on-hit magic damage and his basic attacks can be issued from a distance of 700 units.

E, Hail of Arrows:

Varus fires off a hail of arrows that deals physical damage and *desecrates *the ground for 4 seconds. Desecrated Grounds inflicts Grievous Wounds and slows enemies movement speed. Enemies hit in the direct center of the attack are marked with Retribution for 5 seconds, take additional damage, and are slowed for a greater amount.

Blight Arrow Bonus Effect- If Blight Arrow is used to augment this spell, the center is expanded, allowing for more enemies to be hit. The slow of the ability is also increased.

R, Abyssal Tear:

Varus unleashes a cosmically infused arrow in a target direction, that deals magic damage to enemies hit while also pushing them out of the line of impact. For the next 5 seconds, the area is corrupted with dark energies that deal magic damage to enemies each second they stand over it. Targets marked with** Retribution** are not pushed back, but instead stunned. (The arrow unzips the world as it passes by, pushing enemies out of its way)

Again, most, if not all, numbers are derived from the current Varus, and any numbers I suggested are only suggestions, and not set in stone. So, if you have any problems with them, please understand that I was only going for a solid concept for a Attack Damage sniper archer guy (wow mega good title, right?). And touching back on that "modernization" thing I mentioned earlier, I'd like to highlight some ideas and reason for what I did.

  • Bonus effect on Piercing Arrow gives him more damage, but requires the player to be skillful and stuff (after all, it's all skill mate)
  • Attack speed buff on the W passive gives him better duel potential in early and late game
  • Retribution gives Varus some power in lanes when his abilities are on cooldown
  • The "sweet spot" on the E rewards players for landing skill shots
  • The new ultimate not only gives him new opportunities to land his spells, but allows players to literally level the battle field with a well-placed Abyssal Tear

So that's my concept for a Varus rework. If you have any ideas, please vocalize them in the comment section thing.

Definitely a good idea to play with, though sadly its one of those things thats guaranteed never to happen. Riot pretty much flat out stated they have no intention of giving Varus an active steroid. Granted, they were referring to swapping his passive and his W, but it seems like the same logic would apply. Who knows though?

That aside, I don't like the Blight Arrow bonus on his Q. It takes the entire meaning away from the ability. Its meant to be used as a snipe shot, to proc your blight stacks at a distant opponent. Making it into a spam shot completely ruins its idea and charm.

I have to say that I like this ideas - especially now that he has a "real" passive and in addition a spell that really fits into his archer-theme. The kit centers still around detonating the blight, but also focuses on those "special arrows" applying retribution for bonus effects.

I like it! :)

Seems like fun. I'm not sure if I like the idea of an enhanced AA range with Targets with Retribution since it's applied with an AA and can cause a lot of aggravation with them shorter ranged I.E anyone else. But I don't know about AA range in general. Maybe have it proc when they're in Hail of Arrows since that's like his zone.

I love varus as a champion. It's a sad love as he is not very good against evey other adc minus vayne if you can land ult. I do feel that your concept is good but it deserves a tweak or two imo. The q should only knock 1 more arrow for something like 40% for 1 stack procced, 50% for 2 and then 60% for 3. And obviously this would mean you'd have to q a blighted enemy to get that reward, instead of long range q farming and poking like a god. As for the ult, a similar concept of stacks as a reward. Hitting blighted champs should either slow or stun based on the amount of stacks. So only at full stacks will someone be stunned. Also. The stacks detonate on walking on your abbysal tear, not just on cast/hit. As for the aa range increase, do away with it. That's a bad thing to put on anyone(lol Caitlyn). The rest, I do like. I also know riot will never do this but I will hold it in my heart forever bc this is truly an archer-esque build worthy of a bow wielding man of retribution.

Honestly, I think they just need to rework his Blight and make his gameplay more focused around that entirely. I made a whole rework idea about just his W in the past, and yea. It'd be cool if Riot combined them.
