Caitlyn Visual Update Concept (2.0)

Hey everyone! The MF and Gangplank updates coinciding with the upcoming Bilgewater event (as well as the Cassiopeia updates that accompanied the Shurima event) give me hope that we can look forward to a Piltover event sometime in the future, and I'm hoping Riot might follow suit with some Cailtyn updates when it happens! I made a similar design a while ago that I posted in Ironstylus' skin idea thread, but I think I've really improved since I made it and wanted to try my hand at creating it fresh. A lot has happened since Caitlyn's release, and a huge amount of content involving Piltover, Zaun, and Caitlyn's relationship with multiple characters in both cities has been released, leaving her feeling a little outdated in comparison. I made a few different variations in terms of Caitlyn's controversial skirt. I wanted to stick with something still classy and elegant, but to stray a bit from the fantastical "Steampunk Alice in Wonderland" vibe she sort of has going on at the moment and tie her thematically with champions like Jayce and Vi.

UPDATE:

IronStylus gave me some amazing constructive feedback! These were all pretty quick paintovers so the rendering isn't the cleanest, but I wanted to get some ideas down! I'm gonna be writing more here later! I'm probably going to go back and experiment with some options for her leggings. White is problematic because it's indistinguishable from the white of the frills on her skirts and corset, but the violet is becoming monotonous and her torso and legs are blending together a bit too much. I'm trying to relegate the leather to mostly the ends of her arms and legs, that way they're distinguishable from her upper body. Her shoulders I've mostly kept in whites/lilacs/creams so that they stand out from both her torso as well as the brim of her hat from a top down perspective. I've included examples of variations with both knee high and thigh high leather boots, as well! I'm leaning towards the thigh boots if only because the Ace in the Hole animation has her kneeling to aim.

Very nice! Your work is improving every time I look at it.

Here's my challenge to you:

In some of the early designs I messed around with, (for a VU which may never see the light of day) the more I made her outfit classy and practical, the less the showing of cleavage felt necessary or even pleasing to the eye in terms of her overall design.

You're trying some unique and really cool solves for her dress and other elements, lets see what you can do with that particular challenge of the bust. This is not an intentional "hey cover her up!" modesty sort of thing, this is "leave no stone un-turned" when it comes to iterating on design. It's simply trying more stuff.

I attached a really bad paintover also.

Some things to consider as you go forward:

  • Play up elements. Hat, shoulders, etc. Characters in-game have big landmarks. They're going to look larger than life on a concept such as this, as they should
  • Try different materials. Sleeves could be all leather. Pants could be a different color or material.

Attempt to not be so entirely consistent. There's a hierarchy that our characters have in terms of read. Generally having more contrast or visual interest towards the top and whatever weapon they're using. Make sure you're sorting things and making deliberate choices as to what should go where.

Makes me wonder what the rifle would look like in your style.

So classy, I love it.

You also managed to make her top hat not look totally weird and out of place, which is a big concern several people have mentioned over the years, (keep the hat, but don't keep it so weirdly oversized and cartoony). She looks a bit more grown up, but that's ok, since she still looks young and fresh. I personally like the option to the top right, I love the sleeves (I'm a sucker for victorian era sleeves like that, they just look good in this setting, and add a bit of, I guess professionalism(?) to the look). The gathering of the skirt in that piece is also really nice, it gives her design some visual interest without relying on showing a bunch of skin because of the cool leggings under the skirt.

Overall it looks almost like riding gear, which is definitely not a bad thing.

The middle option looks like it crosses the line from being professional apparel into looking slightly masculine with the tails (it isn't a bad look and I know that not only guys wore tails (for instance, riding coats), but it doesn't seem to fit quite as well as having her in a skirt of some sort).

The first option is a touch too plain, even though the only difference is the skirt design, I think having the skirt of option 3 really elevates the look as a whole, where the first version looks almost like a starting point to explore other options from.

All of these designs are so good! My favourite one is the middle one, it really fits in with Piltover fashion, mostly Jayce's haha. It's always bothered me how her traditional skin looked and I'm really hoping that your design will come to life!

I like the middle the best.

If I could make a recommendation, I'd imagine Caitlyn would have pouches/small bags with bullets, small tools, detective gear, etc. Her outfit, as of now, seems to be lacking when it comes to pockets. Pockets are super useful, yo.

yeah I prefer seeing the no-boob-window, middle Caitlyn designs (where she's wearing pants) over the right or the left. It's just much more professional looking and I think truer to her character. The design on the left still has a skirt that just is a contrast to what's going on on the top part of her body (again, without the boob window), and the one on the right is a skirt plus it looks even harder to run in and even more mismatched imo. I do like the different top ideas, especially the buttons or the white collar thing.

I really like these reworks, reminds me of the recent batgirl rework that put her in a much more functional costume, rather than the bodypaint with a belt costume batgirl used to have

I love the little cape in the paintovers so much, now that I think about it, imagine if her W animation showed her reaching into her cape to throw out a trap. Captain Marvelous mentioned pockets, and capes are generally great places for them.

Badass Longcoat trope is best trope, and the middle one's coattails are closest to that, which makes it my favorite. I wonder if Riot's allowed to take nods from your concept.

I like that Riot has been coinciding reworks with location events. Some kind of Piltover event would be pretty awesome. and for other reworks we might see relaunches of places like Demacia, Noxus, Ionia, and the Shadow Isles. I really like your concept art for Cait. Kinda curious if you thought about edits to her Sniper Rifle?

Awesome, Really love your art, it inspires me to even make my own champions like Div'Odon, If you'd like, feel free to go check him out. Do you do this art stuff as a career? If not you really should, you'll make some great money.

I like The one on the bottom with an old fashioned early 1900's skirt the best.

I like to see Caitlyn as an old fashioned steam-punk girl, who is good looking XD

I like most of it but I think her skirt is almost as iconic as the hat, I wouldn't replace it with pants and as someone said add a bit more color instead of just purple maybe?

I'd just be repeating myself if I came and gushed over every post, so I won't waste anyone's time.

But Riot, seriously consider making some of this stuff. It doesn't hurt to work with community members and improve something, especially if a lot of the community wants it.

This would be an amazing VU for Caitlyn, and as amazing as her visual appearance is already, this would make it a billion times better, by far.

I love the work and the effort that you've put into this, and I encourage you to keep moving forward. Actually, I'll be looking forward to seeing all of the work that you come out with because I'm really quite impressed!

I love all of these designs. I particularly like the caped shoulders concept a lot. Gives her a more official feel since she is a sheriff after all, and goes really well with the military style coat. Even if she had the opened shirt design, I think those shoulders would look pretty good.

Caitlyn as she is now is pretty thematically inconsistent. She doesn't line up with Vi and Jayce, which is what Riot is trying to fix.

Personally I think that, as wonderful as that art is, it doesn't fulfill that need.
