[Champion Concept] - Mako, the Fathom Reaver

Platinum Yak·11/2/2014, 2:14:44 PM·71 votes·10,647 views

Hello - year-long player and first-time poster here. This is my first champion concept - Mako, the Fathom Reaver! Please let me know what your thoughts are. Damage values and statistics balance are not my forte, so any help with that would be welcome. I'll update the concept as I get feedback.

The concept behind this champion was to add to the lore of some existing champions - namely our friends from under the sea, Nami Nami, Fizz Fizz, and Nautilus Nautilus. While Nautilus is listed as a rival of Nami and Fizz, there isn't much in any champ's lore that would spark a conflict. Nautilus is after revenge against land-dwellers, he has no apparent grudge against Nami or Fizz, while the two native sea-dwellers fight for the sake of their respective peoples, whom Nautilus has no apparent interest in. Mako is meant to provide a more active, hostile threat to Nami and Fizz, and has a connection to the mysterious force responsible for Nautilus' origins.

So let's dive in!

edit - Made some tweaks to Mako's abilities based on feedback. Thanks to Jackknife, Master Vidallis, PureMystic, and all who posted ability suggestions - it's much appreciated. He currently has two Ultimate options, since I can't decide which ones I like more.

Mako - the Fathom Reaver "Blood smell - very close - too close to fail!"

---Lore--- Erupting from the seas onto Valoran is the fiercest hunter of the deep sea - Mako, the Fathom Reaver. Into his cold-blooded brain the dark god Krakkanoth has imbued a single imperative - destroy the Marai known as the Tidecaller. Her death and the loss of the sacred moonstone will ensure the Marai's final destruction, and bring Krakkanoth one step closer to ultimate ascension over all the waters of Runeterra.

---Stats--- Primary - Fighter Secondary - Tank Attack - 6 Defense - 7 Ability - 5 Difficulty - 6

---Abilities---

-Blood in the Water- Innate

Whenever an enemy champion takes damage near Mako, he gains a temporary stack of Blood in the Water. He gains 6/7/8 stacks for Champion deaths. Each stack grants Mako a small amount of attack speed, to 30 stacks. At 10, 20, and 30 stacks, Mako's attacks gain additional bonus life-steal.

-Gut Hook (Q) - Cost: 35 mana / Range: Melee / Cooldown: 10.5/9.5/8.5/7.5

Mako digs his Gut Hook into the enemy, dealing them damage and afflicting them with Gutted. Gutting an enemy grants Mako sight of them for 8/9/10/11/12 seconds.

-Shark and Destroy (W) - Cost: 80 mana / Range: 600m / Cooldown: 16/15/14/13/12

Mako dives underground and tears through the earth to a target location, bursting to the surface to damage and push-away nearby enemies. Mako can surface early if he recasts this ability. Mako's burrow can take him underneath units and terrain.

**-Chum Churl (E) **- Cost: 50/60/70/80/90 mana / Range: 475m / Cooldown: 13/12/11/10/9

Mako spews a load of chum at a target location, damaging and slowing nearby enemies and creating a pool of chum that slows enemies walking over it. If Mako stands on it, he regains health at an increased rate.

Ultimate option.01: -Dark Waters (R) - Cost: 100 / Range: 750r / Cooldown: 140,120,100 (version2)

Mako creates a vortex of dark water in a large area at his location for 2 seconds. Enemies caught within it are slowed and periodically pulled towards Mako's location every 0.5 seconds. When the vortex ends, all enemies within its area of effect are dealt damage - the closer they are to Mako, the greater the damage dealt.

Ultimate option.02: -Feeding Frenzy (R) - Cost: 100 / Range: 400m / Cooldown: 140,120,100

Mako leaps at a target champion and clamps his jaws around them, afflicting them with Shark Bite which causing them to bleed for periodic damage. Mako gains 3 stacks of Blood in the Water from all damage dealt by Shark Bite.

  • Mako dives underground and travels to the targeted location.
  • Mako can surface at any time by re-casting Shark and Destroy.

---Background---

Deep within Runeterra's seas, a terrible evil lurks. This spooling blackness rules the stygian depths, twisting and corrupting every living thing that falls into its grasp into unspeakable horrors. The source of this evil force is a mystery that has claimed the minds and souls of all who strive to unravel it. Many are its victims, and its sphere of influence grows greater every day. It is known by many names, but most who have seen it and lived call it the Black Expanse.

Many have attempted to encover the true nature of this darkness, but all who trespass into its inky depths emerge as twisted nightmares, if they emerge at all. Long ago, a mighty deity of the deep ocean, the living demigod of the deeps known as Krakkanoth, was transformed by the Black Expanse after attempting to destroy it. Now an abomination of pure evil, Krakkanoth infests the abyssal depths of the ocean, seeking to bind all things in his vile coils.

In one of the deepest chasms of the ocean, a barbaric kingdom of undersea dwellers has fallen completely under the sway of Krakkanoth. These shark-like humanoids, the Selach, serve the evil demigod, venerating him and making sacrifices to him. The Selach also worship the Black Expanse, and seek to destroy anything that would stand against its spread.

In recent days, Krakkanoth has driven the Selach to turn upon the Marai, an undersea race that have withstood the dangers of the deep ocean for centuries. The Marai kept horrors born of the Black Expanse at bay with the magic of their sacred moonstone - however, the power of the moonstone lasts only a century before it must be replaced, and they have yet to acquire a replacement moonstone as the century draws to a close. One of the Marai was sent to find a new moonstone, and her quest nears its end.

The most ferocious warrior of the Selach, Mako the Fathom Reaver, has been dispatched to hunt down and slaughter the Marai known as the Tidecaller, and ensure that she never returns to her people with a new sacred moonstone. His keen senses tuned to the scent of Marai flesh, Mako begins his hunt. Krakkanoth will have his victory, and the Black Expanse will spread until all the seas turn black and rise to choke the land forever.

---Interactions---

Mako - "Tidecaller! Gut you! Eat you! Drink your blood! For the Black! Nami - "You will not prevent me from fulfilling my oath, deepspawn!

Mako - "Heheh, your kind made good meal! The Black swallowed all, heheheh! Fizz - "You'll be the meal once I'm through with you!'

---Skin Ideas---

-Hammerhead Mako - Mako, but as a hammerhead shark with different gear. -Orca Mako - Killer-whale man. -First Mate Mako - A piratey shark fellah, with headscraf and eyepatch and peg-leg, yarr!

---Revisions--- Original abilites:

**-Blood Hungry **- Innate (2 parts)

**---Blood in the Water **- Nearby enemy deaths grant Mako's 1 stack of Blood in the Water (6/7/8 for champion deaths). Each stack increases Mako's attack speed by a small amount. At 20 Stacks, Blood in the Water transforms into Feeding Frenzy.

**---Feeding Frenzy **- Mako goes into a Feeding Frenzy, gaining a large bonus to attack speed and gains life-steal for a short time. Mako cannot gain stacks of Blood in the Water while Feeding Frenzy is active, or for 5 seconds after Feeding Frenzy expires.

-Dark Waters (R) - Cost: 100 / Range: 900m / Cooldown: 140,120,100 (version 1)

Mako raises a wave of dark water that travels in a targeted direction. Enemies caught in the wave when it raises are stunned and tossed into the air. Minions are swept along with the wave as it travels, while champions are slowed. All enemies affected by the wave are damaged.

Ability Diagram - Dark Waters (v1) http://goldenyak.com/images/colorwork/mako_abilities_darkwater.png

  • When **Dark Waters **is selected, the player must select to the left or right of the direction Mako is currently facing. The entire area of effect will be displayed.
  • When a direction is selected, Mako will begin casting Dark Waters. In the diagram, 'Right' has been selected.
  • The wave of dark water rises up in the right side of the area of effect. Enemies will be tossed into the air and stunned.
  • The wave of dark water washes over the left side of the area of effect. Minions will be swept to the far edge of the area. All affected enemies take damage and are slowed.

I like him overall, but his ult seems a little too similar to Nami's. In fact, extremely similar. Like it's the same but sideways. Plus it really doesn't feel like it fits into his kit cohesively or thematically. Maybe make it something along the lines of a whirlpool, that slowly sucks enemies into the center (where he'll more than likely be) and slowing them. That way he can chain his abilities together. Start with Chum hurl to get them in place, Shark and Destroy to initiate, whirlpool ult to keep the enemy team close knit to destroy, and GutHook anyone nearby to build into Frenzy. Simple enough. :)

I dig it. I want this shark man in the game! The gameplay ideas sound pretty fun. However, i am still a bit confused about the passive, but i,ll read it some times and i'm sure i'll get it.

Twilight Drizzle11/2/2014, 10:31:17 PM1 votes

Wow i really like it! +1 i love that you made those drawings about the skills :D I like his kit but two things:

  1. The passive should give you more stacks if you last hit the minion

2)While i like the idea of the ult, having two "Wave" ults in the game isn't ideal. I mean i know it's diff from Nami's ult but it's still a wave soo..

Gaulrik11/2/2014, 10:43:12 PM1 votes

Awesome. At first I looked at his ult, and thought it would be the exact same as Nami. However, it's definitely more interesting. Really cool champ!

Shamont11/2/2014, 11:53:51 PM1 votes

you could make the heal on Chum Churl heal depending on how much health he has, if he has very little id heal more, and if he has a lot id only heal a little, but i see the heal working the same way as MasterYi but a little less,

GrandManDan11/3/2014, 3:36:23 AM1 votes

This is possibly the coolest champion concept I've ever seen. People can nick pick and say x ability sounds like in game ability y, but honestly +1 for creativity. 10/10 I'd definitely love to see him in game.

Platinum Yak11/3/2014, 5:46:30 AM1 votes

I see that the poll favors the Gentleman. I'll try and have him ready for next week.

Glescoron11/3/2014, 10:48:20 AM1 votes

I absolutely LOVE this concept! We need more ocean-based champs anyways and this fits right in :D

I don't know fi it was intended, but the blackness could also explain what turned Nautilus into what he is now, since his lore involves him being dragged under the sea by a black ooze. Could have been sailing directly over Kakkonoth or something similar.

ThatAutofillSupp11/3/2014, 11:33:04 AM1 votes

damn…i was hoping he would have a hook or a pull but i suppose thats nautilus's thing

MasterVidallis11/3/2014, 5:24:31 PM1 votes

I love the concept, the kit however needs some work, here are some suggestions.

Passive: too situational and mostly useless in lane unless you're snowballing, which is bad because it creates a snowball multiplier which tends to be bad for balance. Here is a more versatile/fun version.

--Blood in the Water - Every time an enemy champion takes damage near Mako (fairly short range) he gains a stack of blood in the water for 5 second capping out at 30. Each stack grants a small amount of AS and lifesteal.

This would make it useful in a lot more situations, make it build up very quickly if Mako is in the middle of a team fight (reinforcing the diver identity) while still being good 1v1 even if behind. Would also create a cool dynamic where the more individual damage ticks he can get on the enemy the fastest it will stack. But the way it stacks would prevent it from providing too good of sustain in lane since it only procs off champion damage and not minions.

---Feeding Frenzy - While an enemy is bleeding from Shark Bite! Mako gains a bonus movement speed.

I don't like his alt, it's too alike Nami's and Braums and I don't see it fitting in his diving identity, a cool concept which I referred to above would be:

--Shark BIte! - Mako jumps a short distance (targeted) and bites an enemy champion causing a powerful bleed DOT. While active the DOT would also grant him movement speed with the "Feeding Frenzy" passive and each "tick" of it would also stack Blood in the Water.

A short gap close to help him close in after diving Shark and Destroy with a powerful DOT is a lot more unique, specially in how it would play off his passives.

I'm assuming the health gain on "chum and churl" is a boost to health regen? If so that's perfect.

Aurox Frostheart11/3/2014, 6:53:41 PM1 votes

So I love the idea of a shark champion because sharks are cool. Might I recommend a skillshot ult where he leaps in and suppresses a single target caught in the center of the target indicator with his jaws and causes a splash of water that knocks surrounding champions back a wee bit? Or does that seem unwieldy/strong?

Neocyde11/3/2014, 7:15:06 PM1 votes

Not bad

Spooky Spooker11/3/2014, 9:24:28 PM1 votes

Could be rival with with Fizz or somethingFizz

DevourerOfDonuts11/3/2014, 10:26:47 PM1 votes

I love this concept, and it seems you really put some work into this! The art is great. My only comment is that, since there are many aquatic champions already, it isn't very viable to be made. But just for entertainment this is good! Also, dark waters is too much like Nami's ult. Just saying. Otherwise great! Rito pls

Xyphios11/4/2014, 12:07:10 AM1 votes

i love this! im a top main and this guy seems to be a really good split plusher

MedievalJedi11/4/2014, 12:22:01 AM1 votes

I love it! And hey! I started playing League shortly after you did, though I am an absolutely terrible artist ,_, Anyway, Gut Hook immediately made me tank of Darius' hook, but I see you've mentioned that already. Maybe it could also make them bleed for a portion of their health, scaling with ap/ad? Or maybe scale along with the ENEMY'S health, so he could be some sort of a tank to counter tanks. Also, how will the targeting be for Shark and Destroy? I think it should be just like Hecarim's ult.

Also, maybe his passive could provide buffs over time? Maybe, maybe not. Currently it seems great as is, but it's just an idea.

Oh and by the way, I saw the Whirlpool ult idea, maybe it could be cast on himself or a certain location, like Maokai's old ult.

Either way, I REALLY hope this will become a champion! Good luck, you never know, maybe it will!

Lord Tyrannus11/4/2014, 4:47:12 AM1 votes

riot take my money i needs this champion. And i have one request Good Sir would you mind taking a look at my latest idea i need some critiques and i believe you have more experience then me in this considering the ideas you gave. so amazing. the champion's name is Txiv Neeb, the Pangolin Shaman.

Vodka SIut11/4/2014, 7:35:03 PM1 votes

Honestly just the look of him is really unattractive.

Also feel like he'd be a difficult champ to make good skins for.

No offense.

Hot Toddy11/10/2014, 8:50:10 PM1 votes

The Gutted vision is too good unless he is the only one that can see it . Maybe try knocking it down to 2/3/4

Shamont11/19/2014, 7:45:05 AM1 votes

I gots an idea, just a suggestion. Its for your ult (and I like both, nothing wrong with either) you dont gotta do it, but i dont like ideas to goto waste. You know what I think is terrifying, walls, what if his ult is where he gains a lot of MS, and as he runs a wall of water is raised behind him similar in height to Aniva's wall. The thing is allies can walk through the wall (u can give them a buff, or not), and enemies can too, but the wall deals a lot of damage, and since its a pseudo wall it could also apply a slow. The great thing is that the wall rises in Mako's wake (with a major MS buff) so the wall can curve and adapt to the terrain. The last effect that I wanted to add to this ult idea, was that if Mako runs in circle and stops running where his wall started, a geyser could erupt from the center, or a whirlpool could sink from the center. I call it Break wall Tide, or Rising tide, or wateves, its just a lame idea/ suggestion, you dont gotta do it, I know this concept is pretty much finalized, but i wanted to share my idea, with the person who created this great concept.

Daemous11/26/2014, 7:56:27 AM1 votes

I feel like the new champion "Rek'Sai" was somewhat inspired by this champion concept. Not everything, but enough. Take Rek'Sai's W(Burrow/Unburrow), she burrows underground like Mako does, basically only her fin like Mako does here is visible while traveling underground and when unburrowing on champions damages and knocks up enemy champions/units in the area. Basically I feel like basic idea of Makos W(Shark and Destroy) was used to make Rek'Sai's W(Burrow/Unburrow).

Does anyone else feel this way?

Saevum12/7/2014, 5:01:11 PM1 votes

Another knock up champion? i like it.

AFK Push11/2/2014, 2:55:41 PM1 votes

His lore kind of reminds me of a combination of Renekton and Warwick, because Renekton used to be a good guy, but went mad from being imprisoned with xerath, and Warwick really wants to kill Soraka because her horn (I think) is the last ingredient from keeping him going completely feral.

Pronar + Mizor and Thante: support, mid lane, jungle age: 23 Race: Noxian Gender: Male

Passive: Power of the pack: Pronar has two hounds that follow him (Thante and Mizor) and ignore unit collision and wall collision if they are too far away from Pronar and will teleport with him. Pronars basic attack is increased by 7% and slowly gains lifesteal over time If he has his two hounds with him , default attack damage with 1 hound and -7% basic attack damage with none.

Q: heel: cost (50/55/60/65/70) mana , cooldown: 10 seconds (once Thante is next to Pronar) Range: 900 sends out a thante to target ally(including Pronar):Thante follows target passively attacking whatever the champion attacks (they do 20% of Pronars attack power) and gives them 10%/20%/30% increased mov speed, 10%/15%/20% attack vamp, 40/60/80 magic res and 40/60/80 armor for ten seconds. Pronar receives 5 gold for minions slayed by ally while Thante is with them. After ten seconds Thante returns to Pronar.

W: drag down: cost: 60 mana, cooldown: 13 seconds (with Mizor) 10 seconds , range: 700, Damage: (80/125/170/215/260) +60% ap) Thante leaps out at a target champion and slowly pulls him to towards Pronar dealing damage, enemy stunned in the process for 2 seconds, If mizor is attacking the enemy it becomes 3 secondes and drag downs cooldown is slightly reduced. Attack dose not move through walls but hounds will still try to drag enemy too Pronar.

E: Blood hound: cost: (80/75/70) mana, cooldown: 7/6/5 seconds (once Mizor returns too Pronar), Damage: initial (60/85/110/135/1600 + 70% ap) (+35% of Pronar's max ad each second for 6 secondes) Range: 800 (Skillshot) Mizor runs in a straight line then runs back to Pronar dealing ap damage to all enemy or neutral units if he connects with an enemy champion or nuetral monster he stays next to them and attacks them for 6 seconds (35% of Pronar's attack damage each second for 6 seconds) Mizor does not take damage and follows any enemy movement but does not follow enemies through through walls or teleporting but will still try to get to chase them. After six seconds Mizor returns to Pronar.

R: Primal ambush: cost: (Pronar needs to have both Mizor and Thante), cooldown: 90/75/60 seconds, Damage: (130/240/350 + 100% ap), Range: (Mizor 800) (Thante 1300) Pronar targets an 200 area and Mizor will run then pounce to target location slowing any enemy in an area of effect and doing massive damage and running back to Pronar , in the next 6 seconds Pronar can choose a second location with a big range and Thante will carry Pronar to target location at a fast speed (150/160/170 bonus movement speed) (not through walls).

Lore: Pronar was just a small boy when his father died in war, and he never met his birth mother so grew up on the grimy streets of noxus alone, stealing and salvaging anything to survive. As he grew older he became capable of defending himself he learned how the world worked around him strength dominated, and with this in mind he easily survived in the harsh conditions of the noxian city. One day he managed to steal two kumungu Hounds who were imported for the noxian military as mounts and over the next couple years he raised and trained those hounds, he named one Thante who would protect himself and help other people who needed it, and Mizor to attack and punish anyone abusing their power. He then devoted his life to stopping both noxus and demacia from destroying themselves and the world around them by entering the league of legends.

Idk if this is good or not but i thought i'd post my idea...

xTechCatX11/2/2014, 5:25:28 PM1 votes

Its really nice! It reminds me ALOT of Tidehunter from Dota 2. Did he inspire you in any way, as the lore is very similar and the whole "sharkman" concept is similar too.

BlackDeaths11/2/2014, 6:28:16 PM1 votes

This guy actually sounds really nice, however there is a couple of things to note.

  1. His passive would not be useable in lane.
  2. Does his W make him untargetable while he's moving like Maokai's W?
  3. His ult seems to be like braum's ult.
