Unique Champion Combo Mechanic

While I'm not going to flesh out abilities and and numbers for this and that, I just want to share a cool idea I thought up for a mage. First thing is, I don't know what the ultimate will be nor does it matter as this concept is just to share how the basic abilities could work. Right off the bat this champion is going to need 9 basic abilities, yes 9. Not 3. How can this be done? With only Q,W,E? It's quite simple we divide those abilities into Q1 Q2 Q3, W1, W2, W3, and E1, E2, E3. Following so far? When you press Q for instance; only 1 ability will happen (like on a normal champion) except it can be either Q1, Q2, or Q3. What determines what ability is cast though? That is where cool concept comes to play. These rules will determine what ability gets casted.

IF both of your other basic abilities are NOT on cooldown: Ability(1) gets casted. IF one of your basic abilities are on cooldown: Ability(2) gets casted. IF both of your abilities are on cooldown: Ability(3) gets casted.

Make sense? While I'm not going to design what all 9 abilities are here is a some good examples. Something similar to arcane shift could be on W3. A self-shield can be on E2 and simple skill shot can be on Q1. Also you could have a targeted root on W2.

So for instance. If you start Q, and need a shield to block the next incoming damage you would press E. Then you can position away with W. However, if instead you started Q, and then wanted to place cc on the enemy, you would have to press W before E. Lastly you would press E which would have a effect I didn't specify. However, if you wanted the self-shield from E, you could instead choose to wait for another ability to come of cooldown before pressing E, allowing you to shield yourself. Does this not sound super interesting?

All 9 abilities would be completely unique from each other, and I don't know what they all would do, and the ones I presented as a example don't have the be like that either. This is just to show a cool combo concept I came up with that I think would make a really cool champion that would have a fairly high skill ceiling. Thanks for reading! [poppy-wink]

It's an interesting idea, but I think it suffers from the fact that the burden of knowledge and the complexity is so high -- League purposefully avoids this sort of complexity.

Definitely an interesting thought exercise though -- I've been working on a few combo mechanics myself lately, so it's always great to see more exploration on the subject. I'd encourage you to maybe see if you can come up with an idea that tries to simplify this a bit -- possibly by having abilities that function similarly but have small bonus effects when combo'd, for example, which would reduce the burden of knowledge considerably while keeping the same sort of combo pattern.
