Item Set Editor

Hi all,

Since the release of the new client, I have missed the customization of sets. Since nature hates vacuum and probably also because I had a few hours free last week, I decided to put together a replacement.

It is a web tool that you can find there: http://lol.item-set.com

How it works

It requires no installation, because it does not do anything directly to your computer. To use it it’s simple: drag & drop your League of Legends/Config folder into the tool, and you can start customizing. You can also start fresh if you want, then ignore this previous step.

When done, you can download your modified sets, and simply replace the League of Legends/Config folder with the one you just downloaded.

A few more things

Obviously, this is a beta since I just released it, but I have tested in both Chrome & Safari Mac to ensure 99% of normal human beings can use it. I will support other browsers but did not have them at hand: if you encounter any issue, shoot it and specify your OS & browser.

The tool is entirely client based, so once loaded there is 0 communication with the server: it should work super fast once ready.

You work is saved in your browser, so when you get back (on the same machine) to the site, it will open where you left off. If you want to clear it: clear your cache!

It will automatically update the data source every 6 hours, so when patch day comes you should see the new/updated items shortly (depends on Riot API of course)

imagine being a rioter working so hard to implement item sets into the new client, cos apparently its SO HARD and takes SOOOO much time for no financial return, then you just see someone do it in a few hours and puts your life work to shame. riot wants to save money? get rid of the 10 or so lazy eggheads you got there for this project, hire this guy, get some actual work done

They made a business decision to spend time on widely-used features rather than a cult feature used by not as many people. Give them a break, they're running a game that 100 million+ people play. There's only so much they can do while still keeping the game running smoothly, having cool events (like Worlds), rotating game modes, new champs, reworked champs, balancing the already-existing champs, etc.

Just because "some people use it" doesn't mean they have to spend time maintaining a feature. Maybe it seems to you like a lot of people use item sets, but "a lot" is relative when you have that many people playing the game -- 0.01% of the player base is still 10,000 people. At some point, they have to decide which features are more important. I'm guessing that delivering more quickly on other features, such as improving the new client, making a practice tool and a replay tool, will be much more widely used than item sets.

The tool this guy made looks really cool. I'm not bashing it. I'm bashing GigaPube's comment and the common thought that Riot is mistreating their players by taking away item sets. Look at all the other cool stuff they're getting done.

I think there is a middle ground. I think it would be possible with too much work to fit the feature quickly into the tool, but you have to take a lot of other things into account:

  • Design: polishing the rendering so it looks perfect in the client is a lot of work, involving different skillsets so different people
  • As Japhis said, you develop for 100 Millions+ people, the scale of things changes everything
  • They probably want to improve on it, like having the item set stored server side, which would increase the time needed by A LOT, since now you need a real infrastructure put in place to store/load all the sets, communicate them to the game servers etc...

And finally, why would you think they are trying to spite you on purpose? I mean there is nothing for them to gain, they obviously have to make choices and some things are prioritized. They are not removing features just to make you mad ^_^

The point is this guy WHO DOES NOT WORK FOR RIOT made this tool that does exactly what players are looking for in a matter of hours. HOURS! Riot, having intimate knowledge of their own code could do it much faster and not alienate existing players. Let me say this one more time, the ENTIRE FEATURE was created in a matter of HOURS. Not weeks, not months, not days...hours. Pay attention.

Ever since the beta release of the new client, Riot has been making posts about why they're making the changes they are. The main point they keep re-iterating is that instead of rushing features to production as fast as possible, they're doing things right. That means making it quick, scalable, being stored on the server side rather than the client side, and changeable.

Obviously if the current custom item-sets feature can be re-made in a few hours as a web version, it's a pretty simple feature in its current state. Note that it only stores the data in your browser and if you want the data in-game you need to copy a file to a certain location on your hard drive. Following the current trend of Riot's changes, if they re-did this feature, they'd want to change it in the ways Cadrach mentioned above. In addition, since it's such a niche tool, they'd probably want to make it more widely useful; for example, they'd add the ability to share your item sets with others, and other collaboration abilities like voting on the most useful item sets (to make the "recommended items" more useful) and so forth.

Obviously you (as well as most people complaining on this thread) have no concept of software development and the time it takes to get even simple features into production. Even just changing the item sets to be stored server-side rather than client-side would take plenty of effort, since you'd have to 1) make several new API calls that the client could use to view & edit item sets in their databases, 2) figure out how to organize that data in their databases, taking into consideration all future related features, 3) change the actual game so that it reads from the server instead of the host machine, and of course 4) build a sleek, cool, fancy item set editor in the beta client. Any change that spans more than one codebase is going to take longer, and this change alone would touch 3 or 4 different codebases.

Now instead of hours we're talking days, and probably weeks, since we're having to coordinate hours and hours of testing every single button-press in every order possible to make sure the feature works on every single operating system and computer that League works for. Then we have to coordinate the releases of all those different systems in every single LoL datacenter and region everywhere in the world.

All that for a change that is just preparatory----that is, it wouldn't change any visible functionality, but only set the stage for future development. So instead of complaining, why don't you just fire up the legacy client and make yourself an item set like you used to be able to still can? Or, better yet, go on the boards and complain about Riot's laziness.

I have some item sets I've been wanting to update and couldn't. Tried loading the legacy client to change them, but the changes didn't stick in the new client. I've been wanting this for a long time, so really thank you!

Edit: Tried to load my own set, but can't get it to do anything. Tried both on Firefox and Chrome.

You did drag & drop the config folder in the window? Are you on Mac or PC?

Dragged and dropped the Config folder from explorer to the window. I'm on PC, Win10. Tested both with ad-block disabled also in case that made a difference. Shows an overlay and text at the top corner with "Drop PDFs or images here or click to upload" when I drag, but when I let go it stays for a second or two, then goes away and nothing else happens. Also tried refreshing the page with it.

Tried and not working still. I'm thinking it might be a Win10 problem because I can't get any drag-drop upload to work with github either. I can drag and drop images like on imgur to upload, but with any other file it just gives an error. Haven't been able to find anything on this myself yet though. Even on Github if I use the link to select the file and upload it says it isn't a supported type. I'm uploading a config.zip file though.

I'll need to figure that one out later I think.

OK, too bad. If you can upload the .zip file to me I will still try & get a look. I might be able to find a Win10 computer at work and try it out. If it is indead the drag & drop, I will simply add an option to click & select folders for Win10.

Ok, I have pushed a new version. You should now find an "Upload" button, that will allow you to select .json files. Currently, you can select multiple files at once, but it will probably force you to upload your sets per champion.

I will improve on this later by allowing you to upload a .zip of the config folder using this same button (so that you can push everything at once), but I must take care of my children first so it will be done most likely tomorrow. In the meantime if you could let me know if it works for you it would be appreciated.

And remember to clear the cache to ensure you have the latest version of the code!

I have a suggestion: Deselecting Stats. For example, click it once and it shows item with that stat, click it twice and it shows items without that stat, click it thrice and it goes back to default.

wow, great job! This looks like a really cool tool. So happy you got to work and made a super useful item-sets tool for everyone rather than just complaining on the boards about it like everyone else.

You cannot yet, when building the tool I felt the need was more to have per champion setup and not a global setup for all champions. It is not too hard too add though, I just need to think how I will set it up in the interface :) I will let you know here once it is added, most likely in the next 2 days.

I dont know how to start, first of all I love your work. I use to edit item set in legacy client then In alpha I can see them but i notice yesterday when I edit i dont see them in alpha but they are in the legacy client. now any edit will be save and viewed by only legacy which make me feel that there is 2 different directory now.I add photo to my file when i upload in ur site it show the item costume from the alpha but where the legacy saving now

Feedback:

This item set editor is great. The only thing I found annoying was clearing out unwanted item set pages.

Item Sets I made with my client saved the item set to every champion. So trying to clear out an item set I'd have to go to each champion and delete it which was very tedious having to click the trash icon and then the are you sure pop-up.

If there's a way to clear out item pages faster and easier without having to load up legacy client or use file explorer that'd be great.

Hey,

The thing is that I do not (and cannot really since this is browser based) temper directly with your file, so I cannot remove them which is what you must do if you want a full "clear" of the legacy client.

This being said, to allow you to clean it fast in the tool, I could provide the following:

  • A clear button at the champion level, to completely remove a champion
  • An "advanced" mode, where if you have "shift" held it will not ask for confirmation

What would you prefer? Might be both ^_^

Hi! Great job on this, I sorely missed being able to customize item sets. I would suggest adding an option to download just the specific .json instead of the whole config folder, this might be useful for people that have figured out how all the folders work and are changing just specific sets.

Hi, thanks :)

I do not think I will implement this right away because the download of the .zip is super fast, and then it is easy to fetch your own .json inside it when you understand how they are stored. It would require to add a button on the item set which might lose less savvy users.

But I am starting to get a few demand for advanced features, so I might add a checkbox for "advanced" mode which would display a few more buttons like this. I will start registering these demands and look to add them all in one go.
