If I want to create an S2 version of league for non-profit purpose do I need to pay for copyright?

This game became unplayable and I decided to quit, however I once was a no life gamer who loved league more than anything else, and I just want to bring the good days back for me, my friends and anyone who loved old league. Champions, items, jungle camps, anything beyond Season2 will not appear in this version. I do not mean to take any profit from this, and if Riot/Tencent find it profitable and want to run it on their own, I'm more than glad to hand it over any time. So do I need to buy copyright for that?

I don't know the answer to your question, but this is an interesting idea. I think it would be cool if Riot gave the chance to download an archived version of the game's source code based on what patch you wish to play under. I think the real problem with this idea will be in getting enough players on the same patch in order to even do anything. Either Riot would have to have a different server dedicated to running 'retro-games', based on which patch your client is running on, or you would have to have a local server to run the games.

Of course you would. Just because the content is old doesn't mean Riot don't own. Everything about the game is Riots intellectual property, past, present, and future. You can't do what you're asking.

Riot would never give out older versions. Do you really want to have a nostalrious/Blizzard debacle?

I don't think you need copyright privileges if you just rename everything and use different character models. I imagine it can be done on Starcraft II or warcraft III.

Don't listen to bellow lower intelligence people. There is thing as Abandonware, which means, that if company is no longer supporting version of a game, you are free to use it. All private servers of every other game use this and they can't be pursue by copy-right (well they could, but companies just don't bother, because they can't win much) personalities. If some people lack intellectual capacity, then just ignore them. You can freely make your own private server of previous season version, but:

  1. as fair use goes, you can't make any money off it, because then Riot could press legals matters against your server (everyone feels entitled to get money from things they no longer support);
  2. Locate your server in china, because china have no copy-right laws, so your server would be safe there.
