Liandry, the Cursed Mage (Champion Concept)
##Inspiration The items named for characters have always interested me. I am particularly interested in Liandry's Torment. Who was Liandry? What happened to her, and why is the item named for her? So, I decided to answer those questions and give Liandry a champion concept.
##Overview Liandry is a tank-killer mage. She has very limited mobility and self-peel, although she can use her W to prevent enemies from catching her. She tries to poke down the enemy before they can engage on her, and gets stronger the better her enemy's defenses are. Liandry's main strength is her sheer damage and her ability to melt tanks, and her main weakness is her lack of mobility or defense.
##Design Philosophy When designing Liandry, I looked primarily at the item, Liandry's Torment, for inspiration. Why do you buy it? It provides AP, but most people take it for the magic penetration and the passive. It damages enemies based on their health. It's a tank killing item. Therefore, Liandry became a tank killer. Also, it is used most often on immobile "old-school" mages. So, Liandry had to be an immobile old-school mage. It wouldn't exactly be fair to her if she couldn't make effective use of her own item, now, would it? I also drew inspiration from other immobile mages like Vel'koz, Xerath, and Brand.
##Abilities
The numbers are guidelines. I'm not a professional by any means.
Passive - Torment: When Liandry damages an enemy with a spell, that enemy takes magic damage equal to 4% of their bonus health per second for 3 seconds and Liandry gains 7 (+ 1 per level) magic penetration for 3 seconds. Explanation: This is a fairly straightforward ability designed to make her a tank killer.
Q - Bolt of Pain: Liandry launches a bolt of energy as a skillshot. If it hits an enemy, it does 75/100/125/150/175 (+ 0.4 AP) magic damage and can be cast a second time (at full mana cost) within 4 seconds (goes on cooldown after the second cast expires). If the second cast hits the same target, it does true damage. If either cast strikes a target affected by Mark of Sorrow, the mana cost is refunded. Cooldown: 9/8.5/8/7.5/7 seconds. Mana cost: 60/70/80/90/100. Explanation: This spell is Liandry's main source of poke in lane. It also rewards accurate, precise targeting with increased tank-busting capabilities.
W - Crippling Blast: Liandry conjures a delayed blast of energy at a target location, doing 80/90/100/110/120 (+ 0.6 AP) magic damage and slowing enemies by 50% for two seconds. If enemies are marked by Mark of Sorrow, they are stunned instead. Cooldown: 11 seconds. Mana cost: 80. Explanation: This is Liandry's only source of CC or self-peel. She can use it to escape ganks or to lock down an enemy, but can only stun one opponent with it, since Mark of Sorrow is a single-target ability.
E - Mark of Sorrow: Liandry fires a blast of magic at an enemy, doing 70/100/130/160/190 (+ 0.5 AP) magic damage and marking them for 4 seconds. Marked champions lose 10/17.5/25/32.5/40% of their magic resist. Cooldown: 12 seconds. Mana Cost: 75. Explanation: This ability lets Liandry do more damage to tanks without being too oppressive against squishies. It boosts her damage to a single target based on their resistances, which an ADC or assassin will not invest much gold into.
R - Endless Affliction: Liandry inflicts her curse upon all champions in a target area. Affected champions take 50/70/90 (+ 0.25 AP) (+ 0.05 Enemy Max Health) magic damage per second for 4 seconds, and are afflicted with Grievous Wounds (reduces all healing by 50%). Champions affected by Mark of Sorrow are slowed by 30%. Cooldown: 100/85/70 seconds. Mana Cost: 100. Explanation: This ability lets Liandry do large amounts of damage over time to tanks, but squishy champions do not take as much damage. This also makes it harder for champions like Volibear to recover from Liandry's poke and burst.
##Lore Liandry was a Magelord researcher during the war with the Protectorate. She began researching the being known as Aatrox when he appeared among the enemy and granted them his power. As the tide of war turned, she delved deeper into her research and eventually found a way she could break his power over the Protectorate and bring the Magelords victory. However, she was captured by spies before her plan could be put into action. Her captors interrogated and tortured her for information about her research and the Magelords' military plans. She did not give in, and eventually, the Protectorate tired of questioning her, beginning to feel it was pointless. However, in one of the many atrocities Aatrox inspired, one of her captors created a spell perfect for their purposes. The curse would preserve her life against thirst, starvation, sickness, and even age, and heal her from the brink of death, but leave her in constant unimaginable pain. Now that her torturers did not have to worry about killing her, they could be even more cruel. However, the pain damaged her very soul. She could no longer tell her captors anything, and she was eventually left in a dungeon and forgotten. Centuries later, she was found by a League archaeological expedition, still held to life by her curse. The Institute of War has agreed to try to help break her curse, and in exchange, she now fights on the Fields of Justice as a Champion.
##Creating Liandry's Lore We know something horrible happened to her. The item is called Liandry's Torment. This led me to wonder, what if she had been cursed somehow? What if the item was derived from that curse? It seemed to fit, but I had a problem. Why was she cursed? I then remembered the war from Aatrox's lore, and it fell into place. A horrible curse like that seems exactly like the kind of war crime Aatrox would inspire.
##Quotes Selection: "All will know my pain!" Movement (examples):
- "It never ends."
- "Unending torture."
- "I fight for you because I must." Attacking (examples):
- "Feel my torment."
- "Die!"
- "Suffer - as I do!" Joke:
- "You. Want a joke. From ME? "
- "What could I possibly have to joke about!?" Taunt:
- "I bring you the mercy of death."
- "You will soon understand what I suffer!" Interaction: Taunting an enemy Thresh: "I can only dream of your mercies, Jailer!" Taunting an enemy Morgana: "Pain? You can't possibly understand pain." Taunting an enemy Karthus: "I would accept death gladly, if I could." Taunting an enemy Aatrox: "You did this to me!" Taunting an enemy Maokai: "I understand your pain, Maokai." Buying Liandry's Torment: "They will all know my suffering!" Buying Rylai's Crystal Scepter: "They will not escape me." Buying Rod of Ages: "Time does not heal all wounds." Buying Tear of the Goddes: (sarcastic) "I'm sure her heart bleeds for me." Buying Rabadon's Deathcap: "Death is a luxury."
This is my personal interpretation of Liandry, and I am interested to see what people think. Feedback is appreciated.
Edit log: 1 (7/2/15). Changed the passive to be less like Brand's, and changed the E to have magic resist reduction instead of bonus damage. Also gave Q and R interaction with Mark of Sorrow. Thanks to N3xtus for the suggestions.
