Idea for Chat Restriction Penalties for Next Season

A thought had occurred to me due to the offer of being able to have till February to get honor up to level 2 again.. and also due to reading a Riot Support commentary to someone else (the person posted the commentary on the boards while leaving names out of it) that...:

Because Chat Restrictions, especially the 10 game one, is not meant to feel like this heavy punishment... It could be an idea to lessen the amount of honor that is dropped because of a chat restriction.

For example for the 10 game chat restriction, it could be an honor drop of 2 levels. Honor 5 will drop to Honor 3, Honor 3 will drop to Honor 1... and after the 2 tier drop it could lock at that spot for X amount of games (however long for normal unlocking).

For 25 game chat restriction it could drop 3 tiers. Honor 5 to honor 2, Honor 3 to Honor 1... then lock after the 3 tier drop.

The rest of the punishment system would work as normal with the honor etc.

This would allow the chat restriction to enforce that it is not meant to be a heavy punishment, while still allowing those that had many games of decent behavior to be eligible for ranked rewards without needing to spend months just to get it back up to level 2. Those that have been been consistently good with their chat will not feel so slighted by a simple bad day. It would still hit their key collection, but overall it would just be a warning that "hey, if you don't stop doing this, then you are going to lose out on quite a bit."

Whats everyone elses thoughts on this?

the reason rewards are taken away is so you have an incentive to change your behavior.

So even consistantly good behavior all season, leads to if you have 1 mess up at all then you will be unable to get key frags, unable to get ranked rewards, unable to get ANY honor rewards....

You find this fair over the most minor of punishments that... as mentioned... Riot themselves doesnt even find fair? Which is why they are giving people who have gotten chat restrictions until Feb 2nd to get up to honor 2 again?

disregardable1 votes

on the contrary, getting a chat restriction is a result of consistently poor behavior.

Not true really. a chat ban is the result of a number of consecutive games of bad behavior. You could have months of good behavior ... then have 1 or 2 nights of bad behavior and get a chat restriction.

when you look at the totality of it ... months of good behavior = 60 to 90 days .... 2 days of bad .... between 2 and 3% of all games were bad behavior ... that isnt really consistent bad behavior.

disregardable1 votes

it is, though. if you look at the reality of it, it's a change in behavior for the worse which needs to be corrected.

Ýisus1 votes

how is that consistent? consistency has a definition ... we don't get to make up what a word means.

"acting or done in the same way over time, especially so as to be fair or accurate."

when looking over time, as stated above, 2 days does not define as consistent. "acting in the same way over time"

Companies trying to regulate individual behavior is quite in line with fascism. The main principle behind this ideology is to disregard individual rights for the greater good of the community.

I guess the more important question for everyone is .... Who do you think is going to "regulate" how others talk to you in real life? Your boss will not care .... Literally, no one is going to regulate how others treat you once you get out of school. There are no safe spaces in the adult world. So I would recommend starting to thicken up that skin now rather than later.

yup, you have to be toxic game after game.

you don't get to randomly decide that "2 days isn't enough to be consistent".

there's an algorithm which determines whether it's consistent, not you. the fact that someone gets a chat restriction is proof that they're consistently negative.

Let's break this down logically. Literally, using logical statements ;)

you don't get to randomly decide that "2 days isn't enough to be consistent".

I actually didn't make that decision, the definition of consistent did. Just like I don't get to make the decision of what consistency is, nor does Riot. If anyone can make a definition into what they want ... Our language and communication wouldn't be .... what is that word again? Consistent.

there's an algorithm which determines whether it's consistent, not you. the fact that someone gets a chat restriction is proof that they're consistently negative.

This statement here is completely flawed. And I want to show you how incredibly flawed it is.

Sub RacialCheck ()

Dim total_rows As Long Dim current_row As Long Dim current_column As Long Dim total_columns As Long total_rows = Worksheets("Chat Log Data").UsedRange.Rows.Count Dim WS As Worksheet

For current_row = 1 To (total_rows)

language = Worksheets("Chat Instance").Cells(current_row, 15).Value

If language = "arbitrary racial slur" Then result = "Acceptable Content - Not Considered Racism" ElseIf score = "GG, WP Everyone" Then result = "Racist Comment - Ban Approved" Else GoTo SkipRacismCheck

End If

Worksheets("Chat Log Output").Cells(current_row, 22).Value = result

Reset
score = vbNullString
result = 0

SkipRacismCheck: Next current_row

End Sub

This is a short Visual Basic Code. It is checking for racist commentary in a chat log. It defines racism as saying "GG, WP Everyone" and defines acceptable non-racist commentary as items such as racial slurs and so on.

This is an important illustration because it points out the flaw in your statement:

there's an algorithm which determines whether it's consistent, not you. the fact that someone gets a chat restriction is proof that they're consistently negative.

My VBA coding defines GG, WP Everyone as Racist ... and arbitrary racial slurs as not racist .... Does my algorithm prove that the racial slurs are not racism?

Anything can be coded into a logical statement ... even if that statement is not logical.

Just thought i'd drop in, i fell from h5 to h1 in EXACTLY one game from heavy reports. I told a Griefer off in some mighty colorful language that makes me ashamed to this day. I lost my cool from my usual pleasant self and I deserved the restriction, i learned from it, I've been since more careful and just talk to my friends on discord instead of game chat unless i'm calling an objective. It was my first and hopefully last restriction I've ever gotten. It just happened to be 3 weeks before season ended.

As has been pointed out in the past... the "consistantly poor behavior" could be one game. Also, as mentioned in this post, Riot Support as well as Riot does not feel like chat restrictions should be this harsh penalty but a warning of "this behavior is not good, so please stop".

Making it so you have to play months to get ranked rewards back over argueing with a jungler perhaps where you were not flaming or toxic to them... but it did last for 10+ minutes (what happened to me, though i am honor 2 again because it happened months ago) is really a bad feeling.

This suggestion is not about me, but more rather the fact that there are others who do NOT have months to play for ranked rewards. Some people were honor 5 and there was a combination of a bad day and then this trolling and flaming person comes and you are upset and you call them a troll, tell them to stop trolling, you argue with them for a while and then boom. Chat resteicted, doesnt matter what honor you were you lose out on nearly EVERYTHING.... you are unable to open boxes without spending, you are unable to get ranked rewards even if you were challenger.

This is not fair, Riot has already pretty much said this is not fair, so the question is.... how to deal with it and how to not have it happen quite as bad.

That is what this post is. It is already pretty much determined that it is NOT fair to have consistantly good behavior be punished so harshly over even 1 bad game. So the question is not "if the system currently is fair or not" the question is "is this suggestion one that makes sense and would probably help fix the problem?"

At honor 1, you're able to get key fragments. For a short duration, you are honor locked and unable to get any key fragments.

I think over the course of getting back to honor 2, i think i got like.... 3. It is slowed down far enough that it is nearly the same as not getting any. As someone who normally does like 5-6 games a day, and it taking over a month close to 2... to get back to honor 2, while you may get keys.... it just does not seem like it at all.

This is not including the checkpoint rewards, though i dont think i remember getting anything for them either.

However, what do you think of the idea i proposed in the main message?

ModPeriscope1 votes

I think it's good. I do wonder just how beneficial that would be, as I'd think players who have higher honor probably tend to have fewer punishments. As such, this would affect a small population, in my opinion.

But it makes sense. Chat restrictions should be your warnings before getting hit with honor 0 or honor 1. I'd think you should drop down 2 honor levels, but not below honor 1 (unless it's your second chat restriction. There should still be an honor locked duration, so that you do feel the punishment, and once unlocked, that you know you're on the right track.

Silly Neeko1 votes

Pretty much this will give leniency to those that show in game consistant good behavior over bad behavior. This also helps prevent even MORE toxicity by those players then feeling like all their work is wasted simply because of them getting annoyed at a troll.

ModPeriscope1 votes

hmmm... I guess I didn't think about how that should affect end-of-season and split rewards. I guess you should be out of the honor lock in order to get those rewards.

Silly Neeko1 votes

That could be a good addition. I think the general number of games (according to what i saw from a riot support person) is about 30-50 games. So potentially this could be a week or a month of games.

I have mixed feelings about that however. Because that still leaves the last monthish of the season for being.... as others have said.... "cheated" out of ranked rewards. Especially since near the end of the season it gets highly stressful due to the last push.... and trolls take advantage of the high tension.

Maybe for the last month of the ranked season you can still get rewards if you are honor 5 when you get chat restricted and still get the rewards even if still locked? Rewards those that have the best behavior if they slip with a month to not have to worry AS MUCH about if they slip. Especially seeing as near the end of season is also around holiday season which is even more stressful for people.

Realistically Riot should be looking at end of season on a case by case. If a person just had a random bad day because they were trying to push to the next rank and getting trolled ... but all season they were good. Riot should give the benefit to the player.

This would be incredibly easy to code into their system also... you can roughly get a chat ban every 3 months of play and never move to a 14 day ban.

if a player has had 0 chat bans ... then the first chat ban they get in the season will not affect rewards.

Everyone has a bad day. And we need to be human and realize that sometimes people lose their cool ... especially in a tower defense game. If Riot wants to cut toxicity out of League ... there is only 1 solution. Close down League. Any time a player other than yourself can impact your gameplay ... there will be toxicity.
