Don't WoTC have a copyright on owlbears?

I think the only monsters that are DEFINITIVELY WotC property which may hold some level of potential cease & desist/lawsuit that I'm aware of are Illithids (Mindflayers if you don't know what that is) and the Beholder. Maybe the Tarrasque, too, but that's kinda stretching it. I've heard the argument for Displacer Beasts, as well, but there's plenty of properties which have shadow cat beast things with void-y tentacles. Rust Monster was inspired by a toy that I actually owned as a kid (I believe it was made in Taiwan...?) and Gelatinous Cube would have a solid argument if it weren't for the fact that slime monsters can be any size and shape so a specifically cube-shaped one is a non-issue.
