Where would you like to explore the League of Legends universe?

This is a follow up to a previous post about making a game that lets players explore the League of Legends universe. If you haven't read it I suggest you do for a bit of context.

Now you all seem to be very set on an MMO, specifically one with a lot of character customization. That is all fine and dandy but I need a good starting place. The plan for intros is to have a number of different places to choose from, each with their own starting story line. That means I need you all to pick the one you want to see done first.

##A couple guidelines

  1. No yordle/void characters. Their lore is too scarce right now. Yordles specifically are on hold until their lore comes out since they are probably next up.
  1. There has to be solid art of the location. I am probably not going to be doing anything from the shadow isles for example because we don't have the art for it. I will have to get to them eventually but for now I want to stick to things we have solid info on.
  2. You have to have a reason. I love you all but sometimes you guys post without giving a why, and when I have to make a decision based on the info you give that can be annoying.

Well I think that is about it so tell me what kind of (non champion) person you would want to start as in an MMO as well as where you would want to start.

##Edit: So this thread seems to be running a bit slow compared to the first one. While piltover/zaun seems to be the popular choice I am gonna give it one more day before making a decision.

My vote goes to Piltover/Zaun, too Reasons:

1. We got alot of artwork for it.

Since you have to flesh out the region for the game completely, the amount of pictures we got with the lore updates will help you alot. Unlike other areas, we didn't just get some pictures of city districts, but even more in depth art like known devices from the city and the infrastructure (for example the lifts shown in the Warwick teaser, mentioned in the short stories, etc.)

Here an example of the hextech devices I mentioned. http://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/highlights/piltover-hextech.jpg

2. Most amount of cultural information.

Since we got an update for Piltover and Zaun, while both being subdistricts of pretty much the same big city, we got alot of information to work with. The short stories given to us showed, that the culture of these cities is pretty rich. We know about the Janna cult, some rituals like the Progress day (with pretty good description), we know about the cult of the Glorious Evolved. We got an insight about the political structure with the introduction of Camille and knowing about the Chembarons.

3. Trading City

We know that Piltover is a city trading with other nations all over the world. This is a great base for quests. Alot of people from different cultures are traveling this city, probably going to ask our "Champion" to do them a favor. At the same time, that means characters have a easy and logical way to travel to other nations.

4. Good introduction for a moral system.

I don't know if you had planned something like that. Let's say our character can achieve the ability to steal. Maybe the game wants to introduce some kind of moral system and including a mini-game for these acts. If you get caught stealing, you will get punished. Piltover is one of the few cities in the game, which actually have something like a police system (Piltovers Finest are proof of that). Meaning that the consequences for failing attempts to steal something can get punished in a less harmfull way. Other regions seem to mostly execute vigilantism.

5. Character Customization

Again, I don't know if this is planned. But since you mentioned the character customization, I would really love to be able to get augmentations and hextech equipment for my character. As shown in given art, Piltover also uses simpler body modification like dyeing hair, tattoos and piercings. I guess that this would attract alot of people.

6. Atmospheric diversity

Maybe that is just me, but I get the feeling that Piltover and Zaun provide the widest varity in atmosphere in Runeterra. We have the slums to discover, the houses of the people in charge of Piltover, the biospheres owned by chembarons in the depth of Zaun. All these things in just one big city.

Maybe to be continued (if you don't get annoyed by my WoTs ^^)

How and where would I like to start the game?

Since I already nailed down the region as Piltover/Zaun, obviously there. But even in this city, there are alot of possibilities how to start. I would chose between 2 approaches, one for each subdistrict.

Piltover If you didn't read the short story The Progress Day yet, I highly recommend to do so. It is fantastic and delivers a perfect hook to start our journey in this city. We could be a young scholar, trying to get a job in the big houses of Piltover at the Progress Day. It is perfect for a small tutorial (How do I pick up my invention and put it in the inventory? How do I use the map? How do I jump, interact with stuff, etc. to take shortcuts to not come too late?).

In my opinion, we should fail that first attempt, since otherwise that would mean our Champion is progressing too fast. The typical story, you sit together with your friend discussing how it went and you tell him that you failed. Meaning that you have to go back finding jobs people are willing to pay you for. Therefore, we start questing.

Zaun Even in the stories, one aspect is mentioned pretty often, especially for young characters: gangs. Jinx, Vi, Ekko.... they all started in their own small gang. I think that could work pretty well for Zaun. We are a member of a small gang of people collecting junk and building their own stuff with it. You could give them a base, the tutorial would simply be to get out of your rooms and go to the base talking to the leader. He then proceeds to give you your first quests, like helping other members finding some specific components. Stuff like that.

End of your agony

Well I think that is about it so tell me what kind of (non champion) person you would want to start as in an MMO as well as where you would want to start.

My dream League MMO would allow players to choose from any faction. If I had to pick just one, though, it'd be Demacia. Demacia is one of the most archetypal, high fantasy places in Runeterra -- with the twist that magic is not allowed within its bounds. That opens up a lot of class-based storytelling possibilities:

  • You could have a Demacian mage class, which starts with the player character creating a public incident via magic and then being contacted by The Illuminators (secret order of magic warriors who protect Demacia) which sets the player on a series of quests

  • You could have melee/ranged classes of all kinds, seeing as the Demacian army is trained to perform every battlefield function (scout, knight, front-liners), including the Ranger-Knights who serve as both wayfaring scouts and Demacian border patrol, as well as the Dauntless Vanguard

  • Lots of worldbuilding and exploration opportunities, what with Demacia being a large nation comprised of many different cities and major regions: High Silvermere (where Galio stands upon his colossal monument), Uwendale (remote mountain town where Quinn hails from), Needlebrook (where Kindred was seen hunting after a theatre caravan), etc

  • Flying mounts! There's an entire sector of the Demacian army known only as the Demacian Raptor Knights who wear heavy steel and ride atop the Silverwing raptors from High Silvermere. Maybe make them their own class, giving them unique flight-based abilities? Or go the WoW route and have these raptors purchasable only by Demacian player characters.

  • Finally, there are lots of iconic champions to interact with in Demacia, such as Lux, Garen and Jarvan IV. It's also one of the most popular and recognizable areas in League, so players would understand where they are immediately.

Just my two cents.

P.S. Are you planning to create your own MMO with this info, or just trying to create a well-developed concept for one? Either way I wish you luck; the League universe is so vast and full of opportunity that it probably would be best to start the game out small with just two or three major regions!

If you said you're just a programmer, how you gonna make an MMO?

Noxus.

It's really easy to pigeonhole Noxus into generic villain land, but people still live and thrive in Noxus. I'd want to see what it's like to rise through the ranks and achieve notoriety in Noxus.

The shadow isles. Honestly probably the most interesting part of runterra and I would like to find out if there are any more beings left like Yorick and maokai from pre-ruination

Honestly, if The Void/Icathia is doable i'd love to see that in a first person view, Lovecraftian stuff has always been amazing to me.

Freljord would be number 1.

Reasons:

  • There is a canon map, which can make exploring the region easier. https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/9/94/Freljord_Map.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20161020025101

  • There are 3 places to choose from. Be a warrior for Winter's Claw, Avarosa or Frostguard. Maybe you could learn ice magic from Lissandra (propably not her) or you could meet Anivia in Avarosa?

  • There are people living in those harsh environments, there could me many possible things they think about living there. Some people could say they wanted to move away from Freljord because they don't like the winter.

  • Freljord is my favourite region. :v

ey homely I just found this again. Have you gotten anywhere with this?

mkyner6/11/2017, 8:12:21 PM1 votes

Piltover/Zaun. Reasons... -It's two sides of the same city, so you get two major regions out of the way in one go. -Some of the most up-to-date lore is for Piltover/Zaun, with plentiful artwork. Not likely to be redone any time soon, so you have something stable to work with. -Piltover is touted as a trading city, so you will likely encounter individuals and influences from numerous other factions, allowing for plot hooks to travel to those locations. -This lets you tackle hex-tech customization early on, which can in different forms be applied to other regions. -There's even a nice map for what's around Piltover that could help you guide the expansion of your project. -Steampunk is awesome.

Pretty sure a League MMO would have to incorporate multiple regions to be interesting

Shadow Isles! <3 Mostly because I really like the concept of corruption, souls, expanding black mist and the so mysterious Ruined King.
