How would you like to explore the League universe?

Hello everyone, some of you know me, some of you may not. I am the local Taric main guy. However I am also a programmer, a game programmer if we are getting technical. As a game programmer I enjoy working on lots of different kinds of projects, covering all the bases so to speak. As an avid League of Legends fan and someone who loves reading about the lore of the world I thought I might be able to mix some stuff together and see what comes of it.

Which leads me to you guys, gals, attack helicopters, and miscellaneous others. There are a lot of different ways to explore a world through a game, and I was wondering how you all would want to do it. First person, 3rd person, open world, storyline, singleplayer, multiplayer, mmo, etc. There are a lot of possibilities, Virtual Reality among them (Though I personal feel like avoiding that since many people don't have VR equipment and the field is still developing a lot).

So again, just what kind of game would you like to explore League of Legends through? Drop some comments below, and feel free to use examples of other games that you think would fit.

I can't promise anything will come of it but I most certainly plan to try. If this thread manages to pull some attention from you all I will be dropping more threads as follow up later.

Good luck on the Rift! Fondling Gems.

#EDIT: Alright, there is now a follow up post on where you guys would like to see first. Just click Here!

MMORPG, clearly my favourite.

Sure, it is tons of workload especially how I imagine it, but god would it be glorious. Everyone can chose the nation he wants to start in himself, you can chose of a variety of races like Yordle, Human, Vastaya, etc.

In that scenario, everyone is solving quests and slowly becoming a true champion on his own.

The imaginable features are endless. Imagine if we could create a Zaunite character, going to the black market and enhance our body with augmentations. Maybe you are able to ascend in Shurima if you complete a pretty hard quest, giving you a choice between different forms. You could search for hextech crystals and invent your very own devices with them.

The intro for champions from the Shadow Isles could be great. You are playing a normal person from these Isles before the corruption as the tutorial. Depending how you are spending your life there, it will determine which type of undead you are after the corruption. Are you a ghost? Maybe some kind of undead chimera like Hecarim? Or probably you were able to create a pact with the mist like Evelynn and Yorick?

Void creatures start as basic creatures called Larvae. The tutorial mostly is about finding and devouring bio-mass. While you are doing so, you get points for your genetic pool to invest. And your decisions will create a new nightmarish beast from the void, looking to earn more points by devouring other species.

Yordle, as the personification of ideals, would have that classic starting experience, where their answers to personality questions determines them. Are you someone for physical labor or do you prefer to collect knowledge? What is more important, honor or to survive? Stuff like that (but of course you can adjust your "true physical appearance" (people still think you are human, probably even other players see you as a human!)).

Important part: The existing champions will have key roles in quests (of course more rarely). Trying to catch Jinx alongside Cait and Vi, who are requesting your help since you are a important witness. Rumors about a new disease spreading in Zaun make you sneak into the canalisation, being confronted with Twitch and you have to fight him. Witness the awakening of Galio in demacia, since Noxus is trying to invade.

This universe just has so much potential. And I think everyone would love to become a champion at the side of these great characters.

Programmer (aspiring game programmer) here as well! Here's my breakdown, you can tell me if it makes sense to you.

In general, when I think about exploring League of Legends, I think about exploring places. We have a decent feel for 136 characters through their lore and personality in game (to varying degrees), but places? We've got Summoner's Rift, the Howling Abyss, Twisted Treeline, and the Crystal Scar are the only places we've seen through gameplay. That's what made Butchers Bridge for the Bilgewater event so awesome, we got to see a new place! The lore bits I've enjoyed the most were the field journals from Rek'Sai's lore and exploring the V... Rakan and Xayah's people.

So, with a focus on exploring places (which we haven't seen much of) rather than people (which we've seen a lot of), I'd lean towards something that facilitates a lot of traveling. Based on the concept art we've seen for a lot of places, I don't think a FPS view would be a good fit. Many of the impressive structures are just too big to appreciate up close and in person, but look splendid from further away. Without a map to really know which parts of the world are connected together, Open World requires a lot of interpretation and transitional art that could become terribly inaccurate in a moment. Some elements of Story Line could be fun, but I don't think it'd be best to focus on that.

From where I stand, that corrals things towards some 3rd person experience, with a focus on adventure/exploration. I feel like an MMO would break that exploration vibe, since you'd see other players exploring everything ahead of you, which restricts options down even further to Single Player or smaller Multi Player groups. I think it'd be really cool to be with a smaller Multi Player group running around, since you can do it with a group of friends. It'd also be cool if NPC's realize you're in a group and talk to everyone who's there, rather than each person starting a 1v1 dialog with an NPC at the same time (aka: less immersion breaking conversation). Traveling between different regions could be a loading screen with some dialog for all I care, but I'd really like to see the culture and the locations brought to life. I realize at this point to see the cultural aspects better the camera might need to come in closer to the player, while to see the landscape/surrounding area better it might have to zoom out almost to RTS level.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

I would love to explore the Runetterra in a mmorpg. Big, old-style, hardcore mmorpg. Without this modern "you are the choosen one, just like 14774624 other players" bullshit. I want to see all those places and hear stories about legendary champion and maybe, just maybe, meet them in game world and fight under them. I want to explore this world as a simple adventurer, soldier of Noxus/Demacia, curious Vastaya, crafty Yordle or shady Zaunite. I want to see how it is to live in this world, how hard it is to survive on sands of Shurima, how dangerous are streets of Blightwater, how toxic is the air in lower parts of Zaun. I dont want to be another god, ascendant, aspect of Targon or Noxian general, just a simple guy free in this world to join whatever faction i want and fight/trade/spy for them. Thats it.

As a side note. Champions should not be just npcs. They should be controlled by GMs and lead main events in the game.

Man it souds like a lot of work. MMOs are the hardest types of games to make and are even harder to make right but when they are made right they feel soo damn good to play.

not very explore-y but an rts could really expand the know how of the average soldiers in each army. give them a unique feel and such

So this started out somewhat organized and then became a rambling mess. Sorry about that, I won't blame you if you skip over this reply.

Overall, I envision the playstyle kind of like Zelda games - 3rd person view, quests to fulfill, dungeons to clear, items to collect and carry, occasional monsters to fight along the way, and you learn about the regions of the world as you go through the game. All the while, you're telling an interesting story about the world. The entire game 'package' would be divided into separate campaigns, each one focused around the goals of a single faction. You could work on these individually.

Factions - So you pick a faction and then you do the campaign for that faction. You'd take the role of someone likely to travel, like an Ionian scout, Noxian spy, Freljordi hunter, whatever. Your mission is something kinda big for that faction, like find some text written by Averosa in the Freljord campaign, or learn about the Noxus war effort for the Ionian campaign. The path to complete each campaign would be designed to take you around Runeterra. So basically, you'd have 8 (or however many factions we have now) smaller games the player would get to work through. This would allow you to release different campaigns as you go, and as Riot updates/changes the lore. Also, it means the player would experience each faction differently. Like, the Noxus mission in Shurima would be totally different from the Piltover mission in Shurmia. Perhaps the same map, but different encounters, objectives, and learn different things about how those factions interact.

Solo or Team Play - Overall, I envision this as something you'd work through on your own. However, it would be cool if you could work with other people on particular missions. Say you are an Ionian who has a mission in Zaun. Well, you could find a Zaunite player willing to help you, maybe for a share of treasure. Or, a Noxian, Demacian and Freljordi could work together to overcome some big monster they found in the Shurima desert they can't face individually. Maybe these are part of the main storyline, maybe side quests. This wouldn't be like a typical MMORPG where you can see other people running around fulfilling missions. You'd have your personal question log and then try to find other people on the boards here to partner with to face the more difficult challenges (or maybe you somehow pull it off on your own and get more xp).

Champions - I feel you almost have to include Champions somehow because they have been such an integral part of what Runeterra is - like, if I can't watch Gragas and Braum have a drinking contest, why am I even here? These would primarily be NPCs giving missions, or even just amusing dialogue. Still, they could take part in some missions - like helping Talon sneak into a Demacian outpost in exchange for information, or following Taliyah as she guides you through shifting sands in the desert. Champions could also be 'dangers' you face in dungeons, like avoiding Ahri's charm in the Ionia forests.

Official Lore - I understand your concern about wanting this to integrate seamlessly with existing Lore, but I think anything is up for change with Riot in the long run. Honestly, stick to the lore as much as you can, but don't be afraid to be creative about filling in the missing pieces. You're going to need to make the call in a lot of instances on everything from appearance and style to cultural interaction and geography. And that's ok! I'm sure Riot would love to see your creativity there, even if it's not 100% in sync with their plans.

Note, I have some experience making maps, so if you ever need a dungeon map or anything like that, I'd be happy to help. Also, I like to pretend I know how to write creatively, if you need help with plot or storyline or things like that.

Edit - Also, each faction you pick could have a different combat specialty. Freljord archer, Demacian fighter, Ionian mage, whatever. You'd still get through your campaign ok, but it would make the instance of cooperation and team fight more interesting. Also, being able to aesthetically personalize your character, like in Borderlands, would be cool.

I'd definitely have to say I'd be interested to see the League of Legends world in an MMORPG format. MOBAs are my second favorite types of games only because we can't really explore worlds and delve into storylines.

ModEchoing6/10/2017, 6:23:12 PM2 votes

I think we need an RTS, both because the genre is relatively dead right now and because it'd help characterize all the different nations on a bigger level. Demacia's few-but-elite, Noxus's swarms of varied soldiers, Ionia's martial sorcery of sorts, Piltover's innovation...Go on and tell me you're not already looking forward to playing them.

Unrelated. But....I want to have Anivia be my tour guide across all of Runeterra. So soothing...

I think a single player RPG like an Elder Scrolls game, or a traditional JRPG would be for me. Everyone's saying MMO, but I personally hate MMOs so...

Brascus6/11/2017, 2:24:44 PM1 votes

Diablo 2 style

Kuzja16/10/2017, 7:18:58 PM1 votes

I'd like to see how all the other champions' lores connect with each other, and not just characters with connected lores. I mean champions with unconnected lores. Like how Viktor 's Glorious Evolution would go to the Freljiord where the war between tribes takes place, or how Azir would journey to Targon where fellow sun praisers like Leona would aid him in bringing back Shurima to its sun praising glory.

I want my main, Corki to have an updated lore just like Heimerdinger did. I want to explore his times with the Screaming Yipsnakes, how he fought in wars, or how flying a helicopter qualifies for fighting against champions like Darius and Garen who both fight with only swords and axes.

Piltover has such advanced technology. I wonder if this nation would become the greatest power in all of Valoran. Demacia may still be the greatest power now but it's declining.

ModKnightsKemplar6/10/2017, 10:23:07 PM1 votes

I want more of the storyline, personally.

I think it would be really fun to do a 3rd person game following a champion as they interacted with the world (and other champions). I think trying to put an avatar of myself into the game would in some way cheapen the experience, to be honest.

I have REALLY enjoyed some of Riot's spin-off games from the past, like the blitzcrank runner and Cho'Gath eats the world.

The Whamboozler6/10/2017, 11:34:56 PM1 votes

The characters. League is all about playing your character and liking them. I'd go with a cool RPG style game (That way you can still keep the leveling and buying of "gear") and give the opportunity to pick your champion from the many, many in the game. Personalization is key. I'd also prefer it be 3rd person and similar to old school RPG's like Baldur's gate or Planescape: torment, but that's just personal preference.

Snowplosion6/11/2017, 12:15:33 AM1 votes

Open world could be really good if done well but really bad if done poorly. An open world game could be really cool, but I understand why you might shy away from that. MMORPG and storyline would probably be the next best for something like this in my opinion.

DiscoVinzan6/11/2017, 1:17:55 AM1 votes

I would love an MMORPG, but the genre is kinda dying, I'm not sure of that; so, as a plan B, maybe a Witcher/Dark Souls kinda game but with the posibility of joining a friend's game and playing Co-op

Ýones6/11/2017, 12:04:01 PM1 votes

MMORPG would be #1.

FutureCreator6/11/2017, 1:44:15 PM1 votes

I'd say something like the short stories in the Universe we have now. You play a short First Person story involving a champion or place, but you NEVER play as the champions only people who happen to get involved with them. It could show the power of certian champions while giving you agency to make decisions that impact the world around, without interfiering with already established lore.

This type of game could run episodicly, with episodes being released with different champions or locations.
