Play comfort, not counter

Fondling Gems··119 votes·5,033 views

Just felt like I should remind you all that it is better to play a champ you are comfortable on than one that is a counterpick. I just played Nasus vs Teemo in a ranked game, arguably one of the hardest matchups in league, unless you know what you are doing. After the game I learned that the Teemo had asked his team what counters Nasus. The answer? Teemo.

Now can anyone tell me the result of someone who doesn't know how to play Teemo playing into a mastery 5 Nasus? Very good, he had to recall by the second minion wave. Anyone know what happened after that? I went 10-0-6 and could easily 2v1 in lane with a couple times the Teemo's cs the entire game. Not because I did sick outplays, or did any cool flash plays, or even got jg ganks. Nope. I just knew the matchup so I started the game with a dorans ring and 30 AP. I put 3 ranks into E before maxing Q. Didn't do anything else differently. Didn't buy different items from normal or go ap or any of that. Nope. I just E'd Teemo whenever I saw him and constantly pushed him out of lane because I knew what to do and he didn't.

So please people. Play what you are comfortable on, not the FotM or a "Counter pick"

"I've never played zed but i've heard that he counters xerath" This kind of stuff is the bane of my existence.

Fondling Gems18 votes

Ooof. And on a champ as hard as Zed too. At least Teemo isn't hard to play. Just takes knowing his powerspikes and dmg output/tankiness.

NichtHurz10 votes

Thing is...Teemo isn't mechanically intense, but just his short range and limited abilities lead to him being not as easy as he's perceived by many players. If his enemies are decent players and don't get camped you absolutely need to know how to play Teemo or you'll just get facetanked and bursted down 24/7.

Fondling Gems11 votes

Exactly! Realistically anyone can pick up Teemo and use their abilities decently. However unless you actually play a champ you won't know how far you can push them. For example in almost all of my Naut games I wade into a teamfight then emerge with under 200 health, not worried in the slightest because I have an excellent understanding of exactly how far I can push him.

Even on the easiest of champions there is a massive skill gap between people who are comfortable on that champ and people who just picked it up.

Champions are about far far more than their abilities. They are about knowing inside and out just what their ranges, defenses, burst, and sustained dmg is at any point in the game.

"short range"

+1

I've punished so many teemos with Darius all ins (I stat check them hard and just win) because they don't realize that apprehend has a decently large cone and once Darius gets item 3044 he can gap close really hard with one minion kill.

Counterpicks are strictly better unless you have absolutely no clue what you are doing.

And teemo doesn't counter nasus very well, he should have tried darius instead

Teemo doesn't counter nasus at all lmao. Nasus gets merc treads and wins lane. I almost laughed reading this post.

The idea is that Teemo Qs Nasus and Nasus cannot Q a minion. Teemo is the best at depriving Nasus at getting stacks. Nasus' entire damage is from his Q and he can't use his Q when Teemo blinds him. So what OP was saying is that he understood this, and maxed E and started as AP Nasus to get around this. Teemo didn't understand and kept dying, because he doesn't play Teemo usually. From this point on he began to play Nasus normally because if Teemo tried to blind Nasus, then Nasus would simply kill Teemo.

Not really.

More often than not, picking a comfort pick into another comfort pick is disadvantageous, but more advantageous than a counterpick that you lack knowledge and skill on. But if the enemy was a fotm player, then a comfort pick is outright advantageous.

nice table4 votes

i mean teeto really doesn't counter susan at all, the best thing to pick into nasus is probably darius or something that can set up ganks really well for your jungler aka not teeto.

Fondling Gems1 votes

Honestly Teemo is the biggest pain for Nasus early. I really couldn't care less about Darius because he is no threat unless he uses Q, which hard pushes the wave towards my turret where I can freeze and farm. Darius is also immobile so if you go to shove the wave into my turret my jgler ganks and I get a kill.

Teemo can deny Q stacks guaranteed. He also does it without pushing the wave. Darius has to push to deal damage, which Nasus loves.

Mid-Late Darius definitely is more useful, however strictly in lane it is easier to Q farm vs Darius than Teemo.

nice table1 votes

a good darius doesn't perma push into a nasus, starts W level 1 and usually maxes E first.

Fondling Gems1 votes

In which case you have no kill pressure on me. Sorry bub, I start boots 4. I am faster until you get items. After we both have items I am tanky enough that you don't have kill pressure without a jgler gank. Early game if you try to attack me you have to aa or Q. there are no two ways about it. aa's push the wave to me and Q pushes the wave to me. Either way I can then heal up under turret. Is it an easy lane? No. Definitely not. However am I overly scared of a Darius lane baring jgler intervention? Nope.

The fact is that only Darius's E isn't aoe, and that is an aa at melee range which draws minion aggro. There is nothing a Darius can do to me that will not push the wave. You have to all in and kill me or I win by virtue of getting to freeze and farm by turret, something you can't break unless my jgler shows themselves somewhere on the map.

Darius has 0 way to deal damage without pushing a wave which is exactly what Nasus loves. If you W me I W you. Then you E. I start walking away with my boots that you don't have. If you channel Q I walk back in so I take minimal dmg. This mean you get one more aa before I get out. This is the most dmg you will get onto me, chunking about 1/3 of my health. However because I will never actually aa you the wave then hard pushes towards me.

There really isn't any other way about it. To stop me from farming you have to attack me. You have no way to deal damage that doesn't push the wave. When the wave gets pushed you have to overextend or back off. If you overextend my jgler will eventually gank. if you back off I get the mastery (runic shield?) that boosts my healing. I will be full by the time we can fight again. However I will also have more stacks.

The sad fact is that Darius has no way to kill me early. You have to have enough items to all in me. However even then I can wither you and walk away. Sure I might have to back but you will never have a serious kill threat on me. Darius doesn't have the early dmg for that. Eventually I WILL outscale you and then I can splitpush to my heart's content.

nice table1 votes

sure darius doesn't have any real kill potential on nasus, neither does teeto. however when a darius is sitting in front of his minion wave you cant ignore him and walk past him to get cs or you will lose 70% of your health without him even using his Q. of course this makes him vulnerable to ganks but assuming jungle pressure if you ever get counter ganked its a double kill for the darius and the kills snowball a lot harder on him.

Fondling Gems1 votes

Except that realistically he will never be in that position. Lets say the lane starts. I go to Q farm. Your options are A) Attack me or B) ignore me

We all know what happens when you let a Nasus free farm so you are stuck with A.

A) You attack or use an ability. I now stand back as the lane pushes then freeze. You dmg at lv 1-3 isn't enough to do more than 1/3 of my health max. I can now farm under turret.

Teemo honestly has more pressure in lane before i start completing items because he is ranged and can poke me easily if I try to freeze and can hard deny my Q stacks with his blind. It comes down to 2 champs who early on do roughly the same amount of dmg to a lonely Nasi who just wants to farm. However one of them is ranged and has a blind.

I fully admit that as the game progresses Darius is much better than Teemo. However early on the fact remains that no champ is better at denying Nasi's farm than Teemo just because of the blind and range.

In any case this is a thread about why it is better to play a comfort than a counter, not who is the best counter to Nasus.

Honestly any Darius player who had no idea what they were doing would have been fucked just as hard as that Teemo because they don't know the lane, their champ's dmg output, cds, range, or tankiness. You will do better on a champ you know the limits of rather than a champ that is good vs you lane opponent.

nice table1 votes

i mean i dont know if you have ever played against a darius that has attack speed runes and w but if you walk up to the wave at level 1 and try to stack your q you will lose 60% of your health to that. the thing that makes darius better than teeto is that he can threaten nasus as much early game and mid game actually has kill pressure with true damage and armor pen from E while teeto ... well teeto doesn't do anything mid game unless the nasus fucked up early.

Fondling Gems1 votes

Except that I am not doing that? I walk up. If you auto me I walk back and watch the wave push because of minion agro. At most you are getting 2 aa's off on me because I start boots.

I have played vs plenty of Darius's. Hell my first time fighting the updated Darius was like 2 months after the rework as a Nasus. The guy clearly knew what he was doing and was putting a ton of harrass onto me, even got a kill or two. However in the end I was still able to easily stack up and take him down late game. To the point where just to see we challenged each other to a 1v1. He was a wimp. He ran. I still killed him and walked away with 80% of my health.

So yeah, Darius has no way of doing even a tiny bit of damage without pushing the wave. Once Darius pushes the wave it is gg.

you aren't going to be faster than a boots start Nasus lv one. And Darius can't get kills if he can't stick to his target.

A good Darius rushes black cleaver, getting the phage component first. He maxes Q before E and harasses nasus using decimate. He will push to nasus's tower no doubt. But he can still smack Nasus with Qs near tower, especially when nasus has to get the caster minions which are far enough for darius to safely decimate nasus.

Decimate's early game damage is strong enough to more than nullify nasus's passive. Also, even under your turret, darius has sufficient tools to triple stack you between E (AA) W and Q.

Late game duels are still relatively easy for darius since he has ranged poke and noxian might is more than enough to chunk nasus faster than he can heal himself. Nasus isn't a health stacker either so noxian guillotine is rather effective, even if partially mitigated by nasus's ultimate. The free 25% total armor pen along with Darius's incredible synergy with black cleaver for even more total armor pen is incredibly nice whereas nasus only has a flat armor shred in his kit that maxes at 40 armor shred (typical darius builds are 200+ armor). Darius also has some of the absolute best base stats in the entire game including: AD, Max Health, Armor, and health regen. I've never heard of nasus getting cleaver and getting LW is asking to be squishy, so I'm assuming the best thing nasus has in terms of armor shred is his E.

I'd reckon that unless you have 700+ stacks there shouldn't be too much of an issue for darius when it comes to countering you in a split push scenario. And then of course in team fights darius is infinitely more useful than nasus and has the ability to peel nasus off of his carries (nasus has no form of peel other than withering which is soft and negatable cc).

Also, Darius does have kill pressure early game, Nasus usually backs out of lane entirely so as to not die. Even Sirhcez usually backs off Darius lanes to heal lest he die.

Your early game duel scenario is dependent upon a stupid darius.

Darius never initiates with W. It's an AA > W since his W is a reset. That's two stacks. you wither him and then he uses Q, not E, when you run away. If you walk back into him to mitigate the damage your wither will start wearing off when his Q channel is over. A good darius will just keep running forward until youre at the very edge of his E radius, then he pulls you in. At that point wither has maybe 1 second left on it. That's another AA he gets, and by the time you start to get away his Q should be ready for a final smack before you disengage.

Unless you're maxing wither before Q, you should be getting 4 stacked if you allow darius to AA > W initiate onto you. Minions will not mitigate that trade and your passive won't be effective at all since youre not hitting anything.

You're basically at the mercy of your jungler. Otherwise, you are guaranteed to get bullied whether it's in the form of dying or being denied good amounts of CS, delaying your late game power spike.

Fondling Gems1 votes

Your scenario is a lv 3 Darius. I am talking lv one i go up to farm. You are waiting until lv 3 to go in on me in your scenario. You start walking close to me. I walk away. I have boots.

Your only way to fight me before you go to buy is getting close enough as I am Qing a minion to W me. There is 0 ther way for you to get into damage range. So you W me followed by an aa.

I wither. Wither lasts 5 seconds. You scenario seems to think it only last about 2 seconds.

You can either E me followed by Q. Or Q me and not get an E off.

My wither is intense enough at that point that I can step in to avoid the heavy Q damage and still walk out before you can aa me. At that point the lane pushes.

Sure I will be low, but I start with 4 potions. I can heal up plenty.

You can try to Q me when I am last hitting caster minions, however that is on a long enough cd that you can only try it once per minion wave. I still have boots and can easily walk back out of it.

I fully admitted multiple times that it is a hard lane and that I will get denied. However it is not an impossible lane. I can still farm and not die. Is it ideal? No. I never said it was. However it is far from an impossible lane.

In any case this argument is pretty pointless as this post isn't about which champ counters each other. It is purely saying that it is better to play a champ you are comfortable on than one you are not comfortable on, regardless of counters.

This scenario doesn't revolve around me playing into someone who plays a lot of Darius. It revolves around me picking Nasus blindly, then someone playing Darius because they heard it was a counter. With the example using Teemo instead of Darius.

A bunch of people like you are arguing that there are better counters. For the sake of the argument I have gone along with you guys and stated out my opinions. I haven't even downvoted you guys at all which I honestly should have done because these conversations are just getting off topic. This is a post about playing comfort over counter, not which champs are the best counters.

For the sake of that I am going to stop replying to these posts. If you are really set on arguing this out make a new discussion and link me to it. I would be more than happy to discuss it with you there.

Quick side note "counterpicking" is usually only an advantage in the laning phase, and I would not counter pick something you DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ABUSE IN LANE because when team fights come "if they were not destroyed in lane" they will be better because they are on their main and you are not

For the sake of argument, if Teemo did what he was supposed to do, what would that have looked like? Or do you not play Teemo so you aren't qualified to comment on it?

SociopathFriend2 votes

Honestly the Teemo player was kinda boned. Nasus gets tanky. Nasus has a big AoE of magic damage. Nasus has an ability that kills AS and MS. Nasus has sustain.

All of that is bad for Teemo unless he abuses his one strength against Nasus, ranged poke. Unfortunately (for him) the OP knows how to deal with that- beat the shit out of the Teemo. Teemo does not get tanky. Teemo is single-target for damage. Teemo only has a blind and a small MS buff. Teemo has no sustain.

The way you fight Nasus is you try to stop him from CSing. Either by constantly poking him down so he has to back or by all-inning him and killing him. That's how you do it as a champion. That's presumably why the guy thought to use Teemo- constant poke. You can also use Morde, Cho'Gath, or any other champion that makes a melee walking up to minions experience hell. As a player- rotate and take objectives. Nasus requires CS to farm up his Q- ditch the lane and try to fight the rest of his team. He'll either have to stay top for CS or follow you for fights. The former means it's a 4v5. The latter means he isn't CSing.

I don't play Nasus, but that's the knowledge as I know it. I know a bit about Teemo- namely that he's been nerfed quite a bit through the changes to meta, items, and his own kit. He's not as good as he used to be.

Fondling Gems2 votes

Realistically a Teemo vs Nasus lane is supposed to go this way:

I go to Q a minion. He blinds me.

I try to Lifesteal off minions. He aa's me and poison chunks me hard.

Teemo can force a normal Nasus out of lane and off cs super easily, especially since doing it doesn't push the wave, meaning Nasus can't wait for the wave to hit turret and last hit there.

Sure after you get a spirit visage Teemo is useless. However the issue is that a normal Teemo should put a normal Nasus down super hard early, easily reaching a couple times his cs at the 10 minute mark due to the fact that Nasus can't Q stack easily, If the wave gets under turret early Nasus takes 2 aa's + turret hit to kill a caster, meaning Teemo has enough time to get another blind off, and Nasus has no way to fight Teemo since his Q gets denied and unless you can wither him Teemo is much faster than you. Even a first rank wither doesn't have much slow effect on a Teemo activating W because he can run out of range before the slow gets too intense.

I haven't played Teemo (much) however I have played Nasus into Teemo before I realized that you have to put about 3-4 ranks into E and start a Dorans Ring to push him out of lane. The result isn't pretty. For all the people saying that there are better Nasus counters, yes. Darius/GP/Gnar will scale up and become powerful in the mid to late game while punishing Nasus early game. That being said, strictly in lane, if you don't know how to alter your build to deal with him Teemo is the hardest to lane vs and stack into until you complete one full MR item.

I just E'd Teemo whenever I saw him and constantly pushed him out of lane because I knew what to do and he didn't.

So please people. Play what you are comfortable on, not the FotM or a "Counter pick"

The other team was stupid. Teemo is just a bad champion, Nasus has better counters that are viable and synergize well with more team compositions/can be harder carries:

Gnar Darius Gangplank

Darius has a relatively simple kit that isn't too hard to learn. Gangplank barrels are tricky but his ult and Q and W are brainless. Gnar is pretty damn brainless (operates similarly to teemo, he's a kite machine).

Fondling Gems2 votes

Actually I would rather lane vs any of those. The fact is that if I can easily fight any of those as Nasus when they are experienced players people who aren't familiar with them will be as useless as that teemo.

JESUSSAYSNO3 votes

funny, I mained nasus for a while last season and it was the exact opposite. Teemo is only a threat before first back, return to lane with specter's cowl and all his damage tickles. As soon as you get your sheen on the next back, you can bait his ms boost, and then easily go for kills with your slow. His blind becomes nothing but an annoyance, you end up lifestealing more than he can dps.

Meanwhile a darius can just stand there and win trades by right clicking you, has similar levels of sustain, has an AA reset to deal with your wither's as slow, and a displacement with his hook. Being immobile makes you extremely susceptible to the Q sweetspot.

Gnar is an even matchup, you suck dick against mini, and shitrek mega.

GP is all dependent on the GP, he's really high skillcap imho. He plays against himself more than he plays against you.

GP = infinite parrrley harass against nasus and an immediate bag of oranges every time Nasus tries to wither and get onto GP. I'd say it's probably more cancerous than Darius.

A quick mortal reminder (nasus isn't really that mcuh of a health stacker so lord dominiiks is meh) to kill off a huge chunk of Nasus's passive will pretty much be the end of nasus.

With that matchup GP doesn't even need to dabble too much with the high skillcap barrels, his Q and W alone should give nasus AIDS.

JESUSSAYSNO1 votes

yep, GP has all the tools required to destroy nasus, it's just up to him to use them.

Fondling Gems1 votes

I honestly never had an issue with GP. He has to use Q to harrass, soemthing that early armour negates. Trying to barrel nasus is hard because you need to chain barrels to do it as a good nasus can aa>Q a barrel to instantly take 2 stacks off of it and negate GP's ability to do anything.

In either case this post is about people taking counter picks into a champ rather than using their comfort picks, implying that the GP would be inexperienced in this case. If you haven't noticed, bad GP's are pretty freaking bad. You can push me around a bit early, but not as much as Teemo. You scale better than Nasus in teamfights, so we splitpush where a GP can't fight me. Your Q range is = to my wither range, my wither is on a super short cd. If you orange it then I just walks back and Q minions until it is back up then go in and kill you.

A GP has to fight Nasus around his W cd. A Nasus has to fight GP around his W cd. Nasus's W is on a much shorter cd.

AFK Push1 votes

What makes a great Gangplank player is the use of the his barrels (mostly) and his ult. A good GP knows that he can place a barrel on himself, and then zone a lane bully with the threat of placing one on them if they get close (this means that if they get close they get barreled no matter what).

The difference here is that GP will most likely get item 3078 before Nasus will, meaning that he will get his powerspike first which is mostly in his Q spam. A good GP should only be using his W for Nasus's WIther, and Gp should not only stand on top of the farm that Nasus goes for, but he should drop a barrel right there to zone the shit out of him.

Fondling Gems1 votes

I don't buy trinity on nasus. I get Ibg. The moment I get on you there is no escape, and I have the armour to ignore your poke.

in any case this isn't a post about ideal playing, but picking a champ you aren't used to just because it is a counter.

item 3025 is better arguably after the trinity changes anyways, but does the aoe give additional stacks if your Q ends up killing 2 or more creeps? It used to not, just curious.

It doesn't as far as I am aware. Item is still silly AF on Nasus though.

I agree. There is a certain level of skill you need before you can choose to counterpick. If you know what your champion does and have at least some idea on power spikes and limits, you can try to counterpick, but you can't just pick blindly.

Additionally, I had a time back in Season 3/early 4 when I played a lot of Fizz, that some counterpicks were used so much I knew how to play against them, so if the enemy had no idea what to do, I'd seen the matchup enough to know what to avoid and beat them anyway

The normal myth that Teemo counters Nasus. Oh how I love that match up. Btw thanks for that AP strat. Makes a whole lot of sense but I'm guessing it has an adverse effect on your stacks. But tbh after Merc Threads and SV, Nasus is Teemo's Daddy. It's too easy. He pokes with his Q, you wait it out and heal up with your Q. He's runs oom and goes b while you get more stacks. Late game he has nothing on you. Most times I let them take T1 turret so they are afraid of overextending and I get free stacks.

Yes I am Silver 3. I also rose 4 divisions in 2 days, something that you can easily verify yourself. However I also fully admit I am not good at video games. Mechanically I have terrible reaction speeds, I misstime skillshots, I forget to use items. There is a reason I tend to main support, and it isn't because I am especially good at it. Mechanically I am a pretty bad League player. That being said I do know what I am talking about a good chunk of the time.

I may not have the mechanics to back up my in game knowledge, but I do have that in game knowledge. In any case I think that any post that gets over 100 upvotes and over 2k views in 24 hours makes a point worth listening to. Should you blindly accept what I say? No. That is silly. Should you blindly ignore what I have to say simply because of my ranking? Of course not. That is also silly.
