Armor, Character, and Environment Creation (Developer Career Question)

I'm currently enrolled in college trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, and one thing I know is that I've always been extremely creative but have never had an outlet for my creations. One thing I do enjoy and have lots of experience with is 3D modeling and design software, and I know for game design you use software similar to design the models, so I'm trying to figure out what software would be good to dabble in and practice designs and concept drawings. Preferably free to use, but arent strictly beginner. Thanks for any information y'all have!

Blender will be your program of choice for modelling if you're looking for free software. You can do professional stuff in it, and it functions much like Autodesk Maya and 3DS Max, which are two of the industry standards.

I believe both Max and Maya may have free student versions though, so consider looking at those. Of the two, Maya is more useful for character and environment modeling, and Max (to my knowledge) is superior for things like industrial design.

If you're really into it, consider seeing if ZBrush has a student version though, as that is (to my knowledge) fairly industry standard for high resolution models.
