**There’s something captivating about it, how fickle and lethal a single bolt can be. Over in an instant, yet more striking than gold, equally terrifying as it is inspiring. **

#Lore

Mysterious only through her choice of company, few would follow Shrike into the violent storms that plague the Tempest Flats. At home with howling winds and freezing rain, Shrike feeds off the electrical energies generated within, often turning thunderstorms back into mere tempests.

Despite this she often found herself amidst harsher winds with not even a spark in sight, drawn in by the thrill and gripped at the prospect of danger. If anything it was to pass the time, nothing grew in the Tempest Flats save for miles and miles of grass, there was only the emerald sea and its wonderfully chaotic skies.

But there was only one kind of storm that could fully satisfy her needs. Rarely a gale of unprecedented strength would surge across the weeping fields, the only chance to experience a force Shrike would consider her equal. Now it was with a heavy heart she recalls the pounding winds and daggers of ice, laid among the reeds she swore never to touch again.

It was a drought in a sense, the peal of thunder had long since rolled along the Tempest Flats, although rain fell regularly Shrike could only weakly hope for a single bolt to flash across the sky. It had been weeks, maybe months, since the last time she saw the brilliant finger streak across the sky.

The hand of God.

Her eyes slowly came into focus, dispelling the visage of death’s patient figure. The sky had fallen into a dark stupor, a distant rumble calling from its cryptic depths. The looming black had all but swallowed the horizon, beckoning her to safety. Still death lingered, waiting to whisk her life away, a cold presence that only served to drive her forward.

With the storm heading straight toward her and time running short, she could only briefly charge her antennae in hopes of catching a wayward bolt of lightning. It was a risky gambit, but a price that paid in full; a violent jerk heralded the electric rush, coursing the energy back into her dormant wings.

Stretching briefly before being unable to contain herself, she bolted into the heart of the storm ready for whatever it had to throw at her. Happy to oblige, battering winds and forceful drafts met Shrike at every turn, weaving in and out of the discordant showers.

What felt like a blissful eternity eventually led her to the crux, or what she thought would be the crux. There was a small building, grey and crumpled as if it were throwing its arms up in defense. No windows and a steel door barred entry.

Confused, she went for a closer look, only to discover a pipeline of sorts heading northward. Deciding to ignore it she went back into the swirling mass of clouds, only to return moments later. She never had left the Tempest Flats before, one quick look couldn’t hurt anyone…

Excerpt from case file #32247

…Upon arrival the subject had already chewed through most of the plant’s cables in an attempt to get to the power source, and was found feeding directly off the main generator. Approaching the subject alerted it to our presence, and promptly escaped despite our best efforts… Proper measures were made in the case of its return to the plant later that day, with recourse from standard procedure.

Laying a standard CHX-7 Electron Snare would prove inefficient as determined while in the field, as well as any outdated non-electronic entrapment devices. Using a pre-authorized .90 Caliber Net we neutralized the subject who returned to the scene later afternoon as predicted…

Initial reports suggest that the subject displays intelligence, but appears to be unaware of the current charges against it. An inquiry the Bureau of Biological Research yielded an interest in the subject, and the collective decision was for custody to be handed over as of section 107.89b.

…Further evidence suggests that it followed an illegal electrical pipeline installed by the plant, violating several border codes with Zaun and Noxus. An official apology has been made to the latter; the guilty party will not be compensated for the damages and will pay a fine of 20,000g for the aforementioned transgressions.

Sight was brought through a drunken haze, lenses granted by the scientists for their purposes, then taken away when no longer desired. Barely conscious and inexplicably tired, Shrike could only sleep through the endless tests, only to wake the hesitant prod of an intern.

Small and furry, his eyes glowed with fervent discipline, yet they betrayed a kind and caring demeanor. Though not much more than a blur to her, his was a calming presence to the room, and she soon found herself relaxed, a feeling she had not known for what felt like centuries.

“Hello there, my name is Igwell.” The tag was bright and new, though it smelled of day old noodles. The rest of his lab coat was neatly ironed and almost emitted a radiance of pure white, obviously to make a good impression. Finished checking vitals he went on to record what he considered the mundane, administering more medication and recording any abnormal behavior.

Whether by mistake, ignorance, or ulterior motive he moved the hextech lamp to get a closer look, only to be greeted by a shower of sparks and the sudden gust of a wind trapped in a small room. With him knocked into the wall, Shrike blasted through the relatively thin walls of the lab, once again breathing in fresh air.

Fleeing from the bewildered scientists and sluggish police, Shrike was miles away before they could react, the word ‘freedom’ lost in the biting gale left in her wake. Laughing hysterically and running on a fast depleting energy, she eyed a billowing mountain ahead, with promising glints of lightning jumping within…

The finger hovered over the trigger waiting for the command to fire; a cold, calculating eye tracked her erratic movements. It wasn’t an easy shot to line up, but she could have made several by now. Lowering her rifle she watched the tiny speck disappear into the black. A small smirk broke through her cold demeanor before quickly settling back into place. Caitlyn knew she’d be back, perhaps with a vengeance, or with a crippling curiosity. Until then they’d have to wait, and she sighed at the tiring thought.

Only a matter of time.

#Passive: Volatile Charge

Shrike’s abilities and basic attacks apply Volatile Charges to enemy units, up to 10 stacks. Abilities apply 2 stacks, basic attacks apply 1 stack.

Enemy champions can disperse Volatile Charge stacks by autoattacking, but minions cannot. Only 1 stack is dispersed per auto regardless of items or abilities.

Additionally, Shrike gains 2% AS and 2 MS for each stack of Volatile Charge nearby (up to 80% AS and 80 MS)

#Q: Erratic Bolt

Passive: Enemies hit by Erratic Bolt are marked for 4 seconds. If Shrike uses a basic attack against them she deals 6/8/10/12/14 (+0.03 AP) additional magic damage and stuns for .2 seconds for each stack of Volatile charge active on the enemy target.

Active: Shrike fires a lightning bolt in a zig-zag pattern, hitting all enemies for 80/120/160/200/240 (+.7 AP) magic damage and marking them.

Range: 1200

Cast Time: .5 seconds

Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6 seconds

Cost: 90 Mana

#W: Static Eye

*Electrical rings of lightning centered on Shrike strike 3 times over 2 seconds, each time decreasing in size and dealing 70/100/130/160/190 (+.4 AP) magic damage. *

If an enemy is hit by Static Eye they will cast a weaker version of that ring centered on them, going 1/10 of the original ring’s range and dealing 1/10 of the ring’s original damage for each stack of Volatile Charge they have. Each enemy can only trigger this once every 20 seconds.

Range

  • Outer ring: 1000 range
  • Middle ring: 600 range
  • Inner ring: 200 range

Cast time: .35 seconds

Cooldown: 20/18/16/14/12 seconds

Cost: 100 mana

#E: Stormseeker

Shrike dashes quickly in a target direction, if she hits an enemy then she does a targeted dash to the enemy unit with the highest Volatile Charge.

Upon impact to each enemy unit, she deals 90/110/130/150/170 (+.5 AP) magic damage and is granted a 10/14/18/22/26 (max of 200/280/360/440/520) damage shield for each stack of Volatile Charge present. This shield lasts for 4 seconds.

Over the duration of the shield Shrike is consuming the electrical charge, converting the shield into health.

Range:

  • First dash: 550 range
  • Second dash: 1100 range

Cooldown: 14/12/10/8/6 seconds Cost: 80 mana

#Ultimate: Discharge

Shrike draws 1/2/3 Volatile Charges from nearby enemy units onto target enemy champion (Max: 3/5/7), then emits a static cloud around that enemy champion that deals 100/180/260 (+.4 AP) to all enemies hit.

Enemies that are hit have their Volatile Charge stacks destabilized, causing them to try and equal out with nearby enemy units. Stacks go from high to low, traveling in the form of lightning from the host to the enemy with the lowest stacks.

Each stack transferred deals 30/50/70 (.05 AP) magic damage to the receiving end, and there must be a 2 stack difference for the lightning to jump.

Enemies hit by the lightning jumps but not hit by the static cloud have their stacks destabilized as well. Lightning jumps do not apply additional Volatile Charge stacks.

Range

  • Initial cast Range: 400 range
  • Static Cloud radius: 550 range
  • Lightning jump range: 750 range

Cooldown: 80/60/40 seconds Cost: 100 mana

#FAQ

General information (Warning: mostly technical/coding behaviors in this FAQ)

For all of Shrike’s abilities and passive, the Volatile Charge effect takes place after the ability hits, so Stormseeker (E) will always grant a shield, and Static Eye (W) will always create duplicate rings around enemy units hit.

This does not include Erratic Bolt’s passive (Q), so if an enemy has 2 stacks of Volatile Charge when Shrike attacks them, they will be stunned for .4 seconds.

Which direction does the bolt go first?

Erratic Bolt always jerks to the right first, then ends by jerking to the left at the end of the range.

Explain what you mean by duplicate rings on Static Eye (W).

Let’s say Shrike casts Static Eye, and the outer ring activates immediately, but doesn’t hit anyone (because she either miscalculated or was aiming to hit the middle ring). The middle ring in Static Eye hits an enemy Gragas, who has 0 stacks on him before that. Gragas then casts only the middle ring around himself (does not cast the outer ring, or the inner ring), but at 1/5th of its range and strength, so the ring goes 120 range (instead of 600) and deals 1/5th of the damage it normally would.

This damage scales with Shrike’s AP and also accounts for Shrike’s magic pen (as if she was casting it herself).

If Shrike casts Stormseeker (E) on the unit with the most Volatile Charges, what happens?

Then Shrike will not make the second dash.

What happens if Shrike hits an enemy with Stormseeker (E), and that puts the enemy’s stacks higher then everyone else’s?

Unlike the shield on Stormseeker (E) and Static Eye’s (W) duplicate rings, Shrike determines which target she will go to after the first dash before the damage occurs (therefore, before more Volatile Charges are added onto her first target).

So, if the initial target of the dash (say, Volibear) has 2 stacks, and the nearby enemy Annie has 3 stacks, then Shrike will dash to Volibear, then go for Annie despite Volibear having 4 stacks instead of Annie’s 3.

This ONLY matters on Stormseeker’s (E) damage on impact, if Static Eye (W) hurts Volibear and increases his Volatile Charge stacks to 4 BEFORE Shrike gets to Volibear to deal Stormseeker’s damage, then Shrike will not dash to Annie with her 3 stacks.

What if Shrike dashes to a unit with no Volatile Charge stacks, and there aren’t an enemies around with Volatile Charge stacks?

Then Shrike will not make the second dash.

#The ultimate seems a bit counter-intuitive

I know this is a big one, so it deserves a bit more attention. To save the scroll fest:

Lightning jumps do not apply additional stacks.

So, one of the main directions I wanted to go with Shrike is that she takes the indirect approach to a situation, she may appear erratic and unpredictable to players who have never seen her before, but the more familiar you with the kit/playstyle, the less random and more calculated the player seems.

There are a few strategies to making the most out of the ultimate, and while there are ideal circumstances, I have no doubt people will find better methods.

  1. One could go with the direct method in a teamfight, Erratic Bolt (Q) as many people as possible, cast ultimate on a squishy of your choice (in order to draw more stacks onto them), then as the lightning starts jumping cast Static Eye (W) and Stormseeker (E) on someone else so you can get a direct passage to the squishy.

  2. The indirect method, is to start with Erratic Bolt (Q) or Static Eye (W), then Discharge (R) the tank or initiator. Use the rest of your abilities, mostly aimed at the squishy of choice, then rely on lightning jump/static cloud/abilities damage to help whittle them down for a timely assault on them with Stormseeker.

There might be other methods, but these are the most basic strategies that came to mind, and it’s certainly just the tip of the iceberg.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below

#Doom mode Shrike

The following changes are made to Shrike Doom Bot:

• Erratic Bolt (Q) now fragments into 3 lightning bolts in front of her (up from 1)

• Static Eye (W) can now create duplicate rings on enemy units every .1 seconds (down from 20 seconds)

• Stormseeker (E) now hits all units with Volatile Charge stacks within range, going from lowest charge to highest. There is still a shield maximum of 200/280/360/440/520 damage.

• Discharge (R) now only requires a 1 Volatile Charge stack difference for lightning to jump.

#Shrike’s Favorite Songs

At least, the ones we salvaged, most of the iPoro was rendered useless when a stray lightning bolt fried it. However, there were a few files left unscathed, and for your listening pleasure:

Here is Igwell from the lore:

Igwell, the Bioengineer

#Skins

Classic Shrike: With an electric personality and speed unparalleled, Shrike storms onto the Rift!

Scorched Earth Shrike: Volatile Charge stacks are representated by fire! Erratic Bolt (Q) is now a deadly fissure, fire rings for Static Eye (W), heat wave instead of static cloud and flaming lightning for the jumps on Discharge (R), and an overall flaming appearance!

Orchid Shrike: Death Blossom Elise, move over! Stormseeker (E) leaves a flowery wake, white lightning echoes through the battlefield as Shrike weaves her deadly spells around the enemy team!

Arcade Shrike: Who do think powers the arcade? Shrike gets pixelated effects, and with every pinball jump (lightning jump) with Discharge (R) she gets points for how many stacks transferred. Get enough jumps out, and dominate the leaderboard! Your personal high score is tied to your account ;)

Mecha Shrike: Can you say, lasers? Getting a rather significant mechanical upgrade, Shrike scans and calculates at the speed of light, using her abilities to their maximum efficiency.

Crystalborn Shrike: Gets a jeweled makeover! Erratic Bolt (Q) sends out a beam of light that reflects off of crystals, Static Eye (W) utilizes earthen spires, Stormseeker gets rather shiny, and Discharge (R) gets turned into the equivalent of a disco party!

Galactic Shrike: To the stars! When earth storms just don’t cut it, meteor showers were her next bet. Gets comsic particles, trails of stars replace lightning and Stormseeker turns her into a shooting star!

Before you post anything regarding ranges, I want to put something into perspective.

Cait’s Piltover Peacemaker is 1300 range, longer than any of Shrike’s abilities, so that should give you a good idea of what to expect.

Ever seen Trundle’s Frozen Domain? That’s 1000 range (the actual field)!

Here are some pictures:

Hopefully this brings some light into why the ranges are the way they are!

Another awesome concept by you.

The bio is very well-written, with my only gripe being the sudden and brief change in view-point to Caitlyn at the end.

I like how the abilities do match her personality quite well. How her abilities interact with her passive is also quite interesting.

Well done. Always love seeing Champion concepts from you.

So THIS is the lightning champion you talked to me about... Gotta admit! It's a pretty AWESOME concept!! Kudos!

Lore: Content: Aside the length I had some other issues with the lore. Firstly, the lore is wrote by 3 different people/points of view, a storyteller, a police file and a scientist. For most people it is hard to follow, especially if all parts are complete different smaller stories like "chasing a storm", "being captured" or "escaping". Surely, it is a neat style to try out. However, and this goes for many lores, the lore doesn't really provide any information about the character itself. All I read was a being, not even a animal or human, going through an adventure. We don't know what it is (if we ignore the picture), where it originates or what is wants, except for being in a storm. The identity problem is mainly focused in this sentence: "She never had left the Tempest Flats before, one quick look couldn’t hurt anyone…" Most animals would follow their instinct to survive and would never put themselves in danger, which also means that it isn't likely that they would leave their natural habitat. But we could also state that for Ahri's and Rammus' lore. They could use the magic excuse... yadda... yadda... yadda. The point is that the lore mostly focuses on the origin of a character or the first encounter or something similar. But here it seems that the character comes out of nowhere, aside the fact that all of his kind would be in that storm. If not, which seems to be the case here, there must be a real good reason. But those minor things are neither explained no mentioned. Instead the lore adds additional and unnecessary parts to let the character encounter Caitlyn and some scientist, which not only feels unnatural but also doesn't provide any additional information about anything. I think the lore would be much more livelier if the lore would had more focused on the storm and the origin rather than being a 3-parter.

Stats:

At first sight there isn't really to mentioned about the stats. They all seem to be quite in the line.
