Champion Idea - AD Support?

Annunziato·6/4/2015, 8:56:07 AM·3 votes·2,219 views

Hello Ladies and gentleman! I've been trying to think of ways to introduce an AD/Aura support. In this process I've come up with my own champion. Steven - The Protector of Many who I feel strongly ties into this aspects while not being too overbearing. If you guys could please look at this and provide feedback as this is my first champion I've created that'd be awesome. Also I know it's a bit far fetch'd but if a Rioter could respond as well that'd make me feel all fuzzy and warm inside! Okay so here's the Champion!

#Steven, The Protector of Many

#Abilities:

##Passive: Hard Thinker Steven only receives 50% of the cooldown reduction he would normally get. All Aura items Steven buys has it's range increased by the amount of cooldown reduction he currently has.

##Q: Stab & Swipe Steven extends his weapon in a straight line, and then swinging it to the right; damaging and slowing all enemies hit. This does reduced damage to minions & monsters. Damage: 60/100/140/180/220 + (110% Bonus AD) Reduced Damage: 50/40/30/20/10% to minions/monsters. Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6 Mana Cost: 60/65/70/75/80 Slow: 20/25/30/35/40% Range: 500

##W: Power from Within Passive: Steven has increased attack Damage. Active: Steven loses his Attack Damage bonus, giving it to an ally champion while other champions near him get 25% of it. The targeted ally champion will lose the bonus if they're crowd controlled or travel too far away from Steven. Bonus AD: 5/10/15/20/25 Cooldown: 22/20/18/16/14 Mana Cost: 70 Active Duration: 4/4.5/5/5.5/6 Aura range: 1000 Active range: 575 Tether Range: 800

##E: Rally Point Steven throws his weapon to a target destination. The weapon rallies nearby allies, making them move faster while inside the weapons aura. If the weapon strikes an enemy champion it will silence and deal damage. It will deal 25% increased damage if the enemy champion was channeling an ability or recalling. Steven can walk over his weapon to retrieve it, doing so will reset the cooldown of Stab & Swipe. While the weapon is on the battlefield, Steven cannot cast his Stab & Swipe and his auto attacks deal 25% less damage. Damage: 80/130/180/230/280 (150% Bonus AD) Cooldown: 15/14/13/12/11 Mana Cost: 90/85/80/75/70 Silence duration: 0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5 seconds Movement speed buff: 10/15/20/25/30% Rally point duration: 6 seconds Throw Range: 1000 Weapon Aura: 1200

##R: Bolstering Roar Passive: Steven gets bonus Armor and Magic Resistance based on the amount of Attack Damage he currently has. Active: Steven lets out a battle cry, dealing magic damage and stunning enemy champions, as well as knocking back enemy units close to him. For a short duration, Steven’s Auras and passives are boosted by 50%. Steven automatically retrieves his weapon if Rally Point is currently active. If Rally point is used while this duration lasts, his auto attacks apply grievous wounds to enemy units hit. Damage: 100/200/300 (100% Ability Power) Cooldown: 150/120/90 Mana Cost: 100 Duration: 6/7/8 seconds Stun Radius: 600 Stun Duration: 0.5/1/1.5 Knock back Radius: 300

#Ability Overview:

I wanted to make this champion appear to be the leader of an army, one that rallies his troops when the going gets tough. I also wanted to give him the “cut the head off the snake” appearance. Meaning if he was dead, his team would feel the effect of him being gone.

Hard Thinker: I wanted this to be an AD/Aura champion. In doing this I’ve realised that Frozen Heart, Locket of the Iron Solari, and Frozen Heart would already send him over the cap. By reducing his cooldown reduction I’ve allowed him to build more of the items he wants without as much drawback.

Stab & Swipe: If you want to be a support, you need some kind of cc. I figured he really didn’t need a stun too much as that would make him slightly overbearing for caster champions when used in combination with Rally point and the reset he would get on it. The slow adds a nice peel to it, while having a unique and interesting range indicator.

Power from Within: This is probably the most complicated part of his kit to balance. I wanted him to appear to just ooze with power, and when concentrated, lend some of his power over to a friend in need. At the same time, I don’t want to give him too many free stats and I especially didn’t want AD Assassins just getting the buff and diving into the enemy team. I’m still looking at ways I could revamp this into something easier to understand and use while still being balanced.

Rally Point: I wanted a way Steven could help out his teammates while being low on health or having to stay back to protect a carry. As an added bonus I wanted to make a bonk kind of thing if it ended up hitting an enemy champion. In doing this I decided a silence would best fit the bill, as adding too much more crowd control would overload his kit. I also wanted to show him 'trading off' his power so his friendlies could have some of their own. Making his auto attacks deal less damage because he lacks a weapon is pretty much the easiest thing I could come up with.

Bolstering Roar: Simply put, I wanted a battle cry that kind of had a “Uh-Oh” factor for the enemy team, while making the roar actually usable. I included a knockback and stun to it for a “stop in their tracks” sort of thing while simultaneously throwing people close to him away. Throwing the Aura boost on there might be a little bit overkill, especially with the huge stat increases you and your teammates will be getting. However I can always lower the numbers significantly or find a different way to use it.

#Changelog: I wanted to add a change log her to document any changes I make to this champion while I make it, so the community can see the changes I make to this champion as I go along! If you want something changed please leave it in the comments, it lets me know if something is over or under tuned.

I like the idea, especially the aura boosting on the ult. However, AD based supports are tricky to balance because where is the line between building him support, building him fighter, building him as a tank, you get where I'm going. If you want to have AD-scaling on some abilities that's fine, but I dont think a full AD-support is entirely viable. Otherwise, you could get "support Xin Zhao" or "support Lee Sin". Can theoretically be played as a support given their kits, but really shouldnt. Maybe if you threw in a max health/bonus health scaling somewhere or an armor/MR based scaling, he could end up acting more as a support.

I'm probably nitpicking/scrutinizing too heavily tbh. I do like his kit, especially his ult and passive (though the passive sort of reminds me of Xin's a bit and I dont know how useful it would be in lane against ADC's and non-tanky supports). I do also like his E, but I think he shouldnt have to click it to retrieve it. I feel like he should just have to walk up to it, like Olaf's Axe or Orianna's Ball.

also i would make W last 4/4.5/5/5.5/6 seconds and increase the cooldown to 22/20/18/16/14 to give him more counterplay and make him have to decide when to use it more instead of just whenever its up use it

I actually really like the idea an concept, especially being a support main. I think it will be a while before a new support champion is released since Bard just came out not to long ago. If Riot game developers decide to implement an AD support it would be pretty cool. Good job on the concept.

These are some really cool ideas, would love to play this champion xD

His passive gives him nothing in compensation for reduced CDR.

"You can build more CDR"

I could do that anyways.

After writing this I realize what a massive wall of text this is. I'm going to try my best to make this all a bit more organized and beautiful.

There is so much wrong with this champion concept. Its a beginner's trap. You make a champion based on all the skills YOU would like to see and not how the enemy could counter it. So far this champ has

A slow A massive Attack Damage Aura A silence A Movement Speed Buff A knock Back A Stun and... Apparently Grievous Wounds from your update notes.

So he has peel, 2 hard cc's, a chase mechanic, a self buff, a team buff, and an escape. Not to mention your cooldown reset would allow him to use his q twice in quick succession. His kit is absolutely the most OP thing I've read in a while. But the worst part is this: The scaling. He's got a 110 bonus AD scalling, a 50 DAMN PERCENT BONUS AP AURA TO EVERYONE IN A 1000 UNIT RANGE, and a 150% bonus AD scaling! Those are good enough to dominate top lane as an assassin, let alone be a support with all the aforementioned utility!

Then you have parts of him that don't even make sense. This is mainly his aura. So, according to your writing, his passive reads "Steven invigorates nearby champions, granting himself and his allies bonus Attack Damage. The Aura is removed while on cooldown" and has the value/scaling of "Bonus AD: 5/10/15/20/25 (50% of Bonus AD)." Now, by using the active you give one person a 50% Bonus AD buff and reduce everyone elses to 33%. So why would anyone ever use the active when the passive is so much better? I think what you are trying to do is say the passive is the flat 5-25 AD and the ACTIVE is the 50%, however its very poorly worded. And lets look at that. a 50% bonus AD scaling? Essentially, with just 2 or 3 AD items you could give your adc a 100+ AD bonus. WTF were you thinking!!!! Thats adding on another 250 damage to every crit they pull off! At a build of 50% critical strike with IE included and an attack speed of 2.0, that means you are increasing their dps by (100AD2.5Crit0.5Crit%*2Attacks/Second)=250 DPS!!!! FOR! ONE! PERSON! This completely neglects the other 3 people getting your +33% Bonus AD buff. its insanity!

And something else you probably haven't thought about: AD casters have great auto's too. This means that, on top of your utility, on top of your scaling, on top of your stupidly OP team buffs, you are ALSO hitting like a truck. This means that you can take towers super fast and give sustained damage even after you've blown through your combo.

And lets talk his ult for a second. On top of all the other OP stuff it does, it also gives him a 50% boost to his auras? So he can use his w to give the adc an extra 75% of his bonus AD? That jumps the DPS of our previous equation to 375 MOTHER TRUCKIN DPS!!! AAAAAAND it makes his aura grant 49.5% Bonus AD to the other 3 people! How would you stop this if you were the other team?!?!?! Even building full armor wouldn't stop the fact that his w aura and ult are increasing the team's DPS by 500-1000 ON TOP of his abilities AND his auto's!

And even if you could overcome all these issues youre still left with the fact that his build is abysmal. First off, none of the starter support items would really play to his style. This makes his early game items weak, especially considering he's also got to fit vision somewhere in his build on his first or second back. He really doesn't have the money to buy a Tiamat or Black Cleaver on his 1st/second back. He'd have to start with something like Herald, but Herald has a terrible build path for him. He's got the choice of building health or lifesteal. Health does him very little good since he's not a tank, and the cdr would only be 5% with his passive. He also wouldn't gain anything from his passive because he doesn't have an aura item yet. The other option is Lifesteal which is WORTHLESS on a support because they don't auto attack! This leaves 10 AD for 800 gold. That is absolutely terrible early game gold value, which is what a support does NOT want. It would make much more sense for him to just buy Doran's and go top lane. The ONLY way he could afford a kit like this is if he were getting kills and csing. Its simply not the job of a support.

Finally, and think of this, who is going to build Auras on him? Serious question. It is kind of pointless. Why waste 2 or 3 slots on Frozen Heart, Locket, or Herald when you could add on another 200 AD in items and grant your team an another (150+100*3)=450 bonus AD in aura's! It would be pointless. He doesn't even need the CDR. His ult is powerful enough to 5v1. Lets look at a sample combo just to show you at max level with approx 300 Bonus AD, though it could probably be higher if you just built full AD. ( I calculated 335 bonus AD from items alone building straight AD with one penetration item).

So he starts things off with his e, which is an AoE so we'll say it hits 3 people at 280+3001.5=7303people for a total of 2190. Now, he rushes over to it with its enhanced movement speed, picks it up and ults. The enemy team can do nothing to stop this since they are silenced for 2.5 seconds. His ult does 3003people for a total of 900 and stuns them for 1.5 seconds, and then pops his w. This is not 2.5+1.5=4 seconds of hard cc coming from one person that the enemy team can do nothing about. He then uses his q doing 220+3001.1=550*3people=1650. The enemy team, finally free from the massive amount of hard cc that prevented them from responding in any meaningful way, is now left with a slow for an unidentified length of time. So lets see. He would have dished out a total off 2190+900+1650=4720 damage. Or, to put it in single target damage, 1580 to one target. Thats almost 2/3 of the health bar of a squishy and you can do it to an entire group of them all while giving them 4 seconds of hard cc. This isn't even taking into account the fact that your w has been buffing your adc for the past 3 seconds allowing her to pull off an average of 6 auto's that statistically 3 of them will crit for over 1500 damage. Its insanity. And assuming they somehow survive this onslaught of torment, you have enough cooldown to throw your e again in a second or 2. You can use it to kill someone, chase the enemy with its MS, or escape to safety.

Overall, the idea of an AD support is interesting. It would be difficult to do under any circumstances, but this one in particular is a worst case scenario. It is the definition of OP and doesn't fit the concept of a support champion at all. I'd suggest to you this: try building 2 sperate champions with the abilities you have listed. Build an aura based champ with your CDR idea. It sounds pretty fun. Then, build an AD assassin with the leftover damage portions (and please leave out the ridiculous amount of utility). Sorry to be harsh, its just that this may be one of the most broken champs I've ever read about.

Hey, Gangplank is a fine support.

I like some of the ideas here. For some reason parts give off a J4 feel to me. I don't think Riot would make someone like this though. They removed Sona's aura stuff because of their whole "invisible power" thing.

Duke Anax6/4/2015, 5:06:45 PM1 votes

in a way Taric is and AD support, with his Armor Reduction and AD steroid.

Well actuiaslly more of a true hybrid support with his AP rartios and magic damage.

Annunziato6/4/2015, 6:35:53 PM1 votes

Kind of a bump, but I updated the post so it isn't so clunky. I removed the base stats and just listed the abilities and what they do, as well as added some more details to some of them.

Byakuya Kuchiki6/4/2015, 6:46:15 PM1 votes

i would change Q ratio to 95% of AD(lowering scale but making it include flat AD) and making it so it pushes the enemy stunning them if hitting terrain but thats just my opinion, might just be because i play Vayne though

Questions:

  • Why did you want to create an AD support? What niche do you think it may serve?

  • Why do you think thus far Riot hasn't *supported */ created a dedicated AD support?

Also I believe with his passive he should have an incentive to stack cooldown. Maybe he has a higher cap than other champs or it effects the cooldowns of his items?
