Why do we have to log out to see conversations in the comments?

When we're logged in, Replies are just blocks that are only connected to each other if they chose to quote the other person.

Log out though, and the comment appears under the one it's replying to.

Why is it that I'm encouraged to log out to follow the conversation?

While logged in, try clicking "Switch to Discussion View" (under the word Discuss at the top of the comments).

It's true that the option to switch between Discussion and Chronological View is pretty small and hard to see.

But it's also true that it took me less than an hour of looking at the board to figure it out.
