Markdown links are no longer working

I'm unable to use this syntax to embed images anymore:


Also, regular markdown links (even the ones generated by your link control) don't work:

[](some link)

Can we please add this functionality back? It really helps increase the quality of posts, and removing it breaks a lot of peoples posts.
